Going to go ahead & declare this not a spoiler.

So far for the Red Sox this season, C Note has a 1.030 OPS in 42 PAs & Wilyer has a .986 OPS in 56 PAs.

McDonough walked to lead off the bottom of the 5th for Portland, but got himself picked off before Roman drove him in. I assume he would have driven him in.

Instead Roman struck out.

What do you think Blaze's ceiling is? And comps come to mind?
People don't really talk about him much/enough.
I think he has a chance to be a decent first baseman/ok third baseman & everything we hoped Dalbec would be in terms of a righty to rotate in with Casas & Devers.

He doesn't turn 21 until December, so the fact that he's not tearing up AA isn't particularly surprising. Ceilings & comps are hard...his ceiling is probably like a top 10 1st baseman, but I don't think he gets there the vast majority of the time, & I think his most likely outcome is decent to good platoonish bat.

Blaze is interesting because he was raking in Greenville (145 wRC+ in 322 PAs) & not so much at Portland (89 in 199 prior to today), but he's actually lowered his strikeout rate from 14.6% to 13.6%, which is pretty microscopic. However, his ISO has dropped from .209 to .151, his BABIP has decreased from .349 to .266 & his walk rate has decreased from 8.7% to 6%.

The leap from last year where his #s were worse (other than BABIP) in Greenville than they are now in Portland, & when he was striking out 25% last year in Greenville, are super encouraging, though.

If he follows a similar trajectory in his 2nd season in Portland as he did in his 2nd at Greenville, he'll really start moving back up boards.

Sterling Sharp started for Portland & pitched 3 innings, allowing 1 fun in 2 hits & 2 walks, with 2 strikeouts.

Ryan Miller is in for the 4th down 1-0.
Miller also pitched 3 innings, but 0 runs, 2 hits, 1 walk & 2 strikeouts.

Cody Scroggins in for the 7th with the game still tied at 1.

I think that’s a very optimistic viewpoint. Most reports are that he cannot hit anything beyond a pedestrian fastball. I think there’s a good chance he flames out in aaa.

He definitely crushes breaking balls & makes weak contact against fastballs. I think it's a bit early to write off his ability for that to improve. He's still quite young for his level. I would be more concerned if he was striking out at a high rate & just getting fastballs blown by him.

It's definitely quite possible he never makes it, as there's always a wide range of outcomes still, but I don't think optimism is unfounded based on his profile & age. & I don't project him to be an every day player or anything most of the time.

BVB's final line:

6 IP
2 runs
4 hits
1 walk
9 strikeouts

95 pitches, 63 strikes.

Syracuse is obviously a bad team, but still a pretty encouraging outing.

Luis Guerrero is in for the 7th up 5-2.

Cody Scroggins in for the 7th with the game still tied at 1.
Scroggins pitched a 1-2-3 7th with a strikeout, but allowed an unearned run in the 8th with the aid of a Meidroth error.

Portland down 2-1, b8.

Portland lost 2-1.

Scroggins pitched 3 innings, allowing 1 unearned run, 1 hit & striking out 2. He's been quite good since returning to Portland after sucking earlier in the season when I guess he was hurt & struggling on his rehab assignment in Salem.

Since returning to Portland he has pitched 3 games, 6.1 innings, 2 hits, 0 ER, 0 walks, 5 strikeouts.

SSS, but still somewhat encouraging for the 27 y/o 2019 9th rounder.

McDonough was 2-2 with a walk, but the rest of the Sea Dogs collectively struggled, including Roman (0-3 with a walk & a strikeout), Yorke (0-4 with 2 strikeouts), & Teel (0-4 with a strikeout).

Meidroth was 1-3 with a walk.

Hickey was 1-4 with a double.

Blaze & Lugo were 1-4.

ROSIER got a double to lead off the 3rd.

Blizzard singled & stole 2nd. 2nd & 3rd 0 out for Sogard.
I like Rosier, he can really run. I'm surprised he hasn't stolen a base yet in AAA. Probably still adjusting. His hitting seems to have improved this year. I think he'll play in the majors someday, at least as a 5th OF pinch-runner at least, hopefully more.
But the problem is he is yet another LH hitting OF. They are going to have to make at least one trade, maybe more, maybe this offseason, to try to get more balance in the organization between RH and LH hitters.

Has there been any word on Bonaci? I saw that was put on the restricted list but have no idea what that even means.

I'm intrigued by the idea of Bryan Mata being part of the MLB bullpen next year.
I'm still intrigued by the prospect of his ceiling being a mid-rotation starter although that ship has likely sailed. But he has some filthy stuff, is a big guy, and I also like his poise and mound presence

Interesting to see Chris Clegg rave about Yordanny cuz I was also wondering if he's our best pitching prospect after yesterday's performance. And his size has to count for something, right - whether it's durability or projection or whatever.

It's only been 3 games, & if memory serves me correctly, there was only like 1 time at most there wasn't someone ahead of him on the bases (not sure about his previous stint when he was an injury replacement).

70% of pitchers are righty. I'm wondering if there may be some new thing about having 70% of your hitters be lefty as a result. Probably just a coincidence as you're pretty much always just going BPA.

Have heard nothing on Bonaci. I'm kind of thinking it meant they gave him permission to go home to Venezuela & call it a season.

I'm still trying to find out what happened to Smil Guzman. Hard to get info on these guys.

Yeah... if he had options it would make sense to have him start the season as a starter in Worcester, but without options I think it makes sense to throw him in the pen if he can earn a spot.

Yordanny's stuff is electric & really jumps out. It's crazy how big of a leap he took from last year.

I was just looking & found my 1st YORDANNY post. The funny thing is I was quoting Ian Cundall in it. Not sure why SP is still lagging so far behind in the YORDANNY love.

Been catching up on the SoxProspects pod (the episode prior to this weeks emergency pod). They get into a scouting report on Yordanny, as Cundall saw him pitch.

They liked his make-up (size, attitude on the mound) and acknowledge the breaking ball, and that Yordanny loves to use it. They seemed pleased by the overall package.

The concern was that his fastball iant a swing and miss pitch yet, and that he won’t be able to pitch off the breaking ball as much at higher levels. This was countered by the belief in his frame and arm action that he may well add velocity, which would make the fastball a weapon.

Please try to forgive them their trespasses.

I dooooo, & they do great work. But they just seem really slow to move people up (& down). Like the last update, almost all their larger moves were moving people closer to where I already had them.

Maybe they've been burned too many times in the past by the Gilberto's of the world & I live a carefree existence unencumbered by past overhyped prospects.

With the disclaimer that I try to stick to photos--they update on a schedule, and they really try to take a long-term approach. I do think they rely extensively on seeing players in person as much as possible--both seeing highlights online and reading box scores are misleading in a way that being at a game isn't. E.g. Teel has a caught stealing in today's [9/15] game--I think the entire ballpark yelled when the runner took off (maybe a delayed steal?), so much so that I had plenty of time to focus on Yorke receiving the ball. I adore Teel already, but this was more of a baserunning blunder than a CS.

And there's always an emphasis on "how will this play as the player moves up?"--not just "how is it working now?"

Yorke is an old-looking 21 year old. I always try to find highlights but couldn't of this one. Makes sense why. Looks like a perfect throw, though, & great shots.

& that's all fair, & I know they do their updates once a month. I do feel good about the fact that the people I have far apart from them on they usually update to be closer to where I am within a couple months, so it helps me feel good about my process.

Even though I'm just a guy who watches almost none of the games & literally 0 in person (just Las Vegas Aviators games on occasion, which don't help with my list), I feel pretty good about my list & don't think it's tooooo reactionary to small sample sizes.

SP used to do player comps that would be based on, like, an offhand remark made by a random scout or agent when a player was 16. Or maybe similar swings and body types and vaguely similar tools.

Famously (in Sox-prospect-adjacent circles at least), SP’s copy for bonus babies Oscar Tejeda and Engel Beltre compared them to guys like—no joke—Barry Bonds. There was too much weight on incomplete info.

I don’t speak for them, but the line they say continues to be that they’d rather be slow to love someone up, rather than move up someone sooner and then have to adjust down.

These are fun. I need to find the photo of yours referenced on the recent pod of Teel running the baes and looking like a maniac.

Their description of Teel as a try-hard made me laugh, and it’s been a hard, hard week for laughs

I mean, people have to be ranked somewhere right? If some people are too low by definition others are too high.

I'd rather try & fail at perfection lol
