it's put up or shut up time.

The next 10 games:

(4) at home vs. 36-77 Royals
(3) at home vs. 49-62 Tigers
(3) on road @ 49-63 Nationals

They need to win at least 7.

After this “easy” part of the schedule, they have 13 consecutive games vs the Yankees, Astros and Dodgers. They need to somehow survive that stretch and go into September still within 3-4 games of the final spot. Then they have a chance.

I think 8 will put them a game out after the next stretch as I'm seeing Toronto go 6-4 over the same time frame and the Yankees going 5-5. 7 wins isn't bad, but if they can (and really should be able to) win 8 it puts them back into a good spot heading into some direct competition afterwards.

At least 8 because as mentioned already, it gets much tougher after that. And now they also have to pass Seattle who've been playing well for weeks now.

What a shitty series they just finished. They were never supposed to be any good. The ceiling was fun. Have fun, you fuckers.

The Royales won 7 in a row before dropping their last 2 to Philly. I expect them to keep playing well here. I don't dig that the most.

“Trevor Story changed his mind”

Somebody probably called him and told him to get his ass to Boston.
Sounds about right. But the fact that he's hitting well had something to do with it too, probably.

Plus, how many spreads is he paying for at this pace (or is it one per level?)

Game 112
The weekend was awful. The Sox got swept.
The Blue Jays crushed every pitcher who schlepped
up to the mound. None of our hitters stepped
up to the plate looking skilled or adept.
It seems the whole team showed up under-prepped
(like they had Finals but they overslept.)
July was quite awesome. The Red Sox crept
up in the standings. We cheered as they leapt
over contenders. Though they have not kept
pace here in August, I will not accept
that our games won't matter when we reach Sept-
ember. Let's steal Royal wins like a clept-
omaniac and prove we're not inept

At the behest of clubhouse manager Tommy McLaughlin, the Red Sox will wear yellow tonight. Cora's explanation: "Tommy made the right call right away: In case of emergency, wear yellow."

I think the Sox will have to win 9 or 10 games out of the next 10 to contend for a Wild Card berth. If they go 6-4 before running through the gauntlet, they could find them 5 games out and facing tough competition.

So win today.

I think 7 is the bare minimum to hang in there as at least fringe-ily in the hunt (and assuming no unusual tailspins from the competition). 8 or more would probably put them back in the thick of the things. Less than 7 and, well, we'll be counting on those unusual tailspins. I'm not quite as worried about the "gauntlet" portion of the schedule because this year's team has shown an ability to hang tough against the better teams of the league and as the calendar rolls along we'll be getting reinforcements back at (hopefully) a steady clip, but we really gotta take care of some business during the next stretch for the tougher part of the schedule to even matter.

What a difference a week makes, ugh.

They were hanging on the fringes of being in the hunt before going 3 for 7 in their last 10, so I voted needing 7 of the next 10 to be at least in striking distance. That might be optimistic, though. Among other things, there are too many other teams who are just, well, better.

Win tonight, please?
