Noe Ramirez is putting together a nice season in Portland: 35 IP, 32 Ks, 8 BB, 0 HR, 2.06 ERA.  I'd like to see him get promoted and, if he keeps it up, potentially get into the mix for the Pawtucket shuttle/bullpen depth next year.

He's got a wipe out split/change. Lots of fun to watch. He's fit in well with the current group.

mabrowndog mentioned this in the post draft news and information thread, but Sam Travis is making his debut tonight, for the Spinners.  They're playing in Connecticut against the Tigers at Dodd Stadium.  Game just got started for anyone local who wants to go check him out.

STORIES

PAWSOX

Games Story

Pawtucket twice batted around in the seventh inning on Wednesday, first sending 12 batters to the plate and scoring six runs in the opener of a twin-bill, then scoring four times in the nightcap to earn a doubleheader sweep of the Rochester Red Wings, 9-4 and 4-1.

The opener was the completion of a rain-suspended game that began on Tuesday night.

Recovering Red Sox players Shane Victorino (hamstring strain) and Will Middlebrooks (fractured index finger) were in the lineup for the PawSox when Tuesday night’s game resumed with Pawtucket leading 2-1 in the fourth inning. Victorino, however, was removed immediately for a pinch-hitter and finished 0-for-2 while Middlebrooks played the entire game as the DH and batted 2-for-5 with a walk and two runs scored. Neither played in the second game.

Rochester closer Michael Tonkin (1-1) was charged with all four runs and his first blown save of the season as Pawtucket rallied to win game two with three hits, three walks and one huge error. Mookie Betts’ infield RBI single against Tonkin tied the score with one out and left runners on the corners.

After an intentional walk to Mike McCoy, the Red Wings brought in lefty Aaron Thompson to pitch to Travis Shaw with the bases loaded. Shaw hit a ground ball to the first baseman Brad Nelson, but Nelson’s throw to the plate was off the mark and allowed two runs to score.

Two batters later Ryan Roberts lifted a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-1. Rochester was charged with four errors in the doubleheader, which led to nine unearned runs scoring for Pawtucket.
SEADOGS

Games Story

Luis Diaz was promoted to Double-A on Monday after Portland Sea Dogs starting pitcher Miguel Pena was suspended for 100 games.

Diaz took advantage of that opportunity Wednesday, putting together a masterful Double-A debut.

The 22-year-old Venezuelan allowed only one base runner in six dominant innings to lead Portland to a 5-1 win over the Erie SeaWolves as the Sea Dogs salvaged the final game of the series in front of 2,489 fans at Jerry Uht Park.

“Luis did a good job,” Portland Manager Billy McMillon said. “He pounded the strike zone and used minimal pitches to keep (Erie) off balance.”

Diaz’s performance made the 12-hour bus ride back to Portland a little easier after the Sea Dogs fell 8-6 earlier in the day in the completion of a game suspended Tuesday night.

Diaz was signed by the Boston Red Sox in 2008 and spent two seasons in the Dominican Summer League. He moved up to the Lowell Spinners in 2011 and Greenville in 2012. After splitting time between Greenville and Salem in 2013, Diaz started the current season in Salem and was 6-3 with a 3.33 ERA.

“I was trying to throw my fastball for a strike early in counts,” Diaz said. “I wanted to throw all of my pitches for strikes, and I’m excited we got the win.”

Diaz challenged hitters throughout the afternoon, needing just 53 pitches to get through six innings. The only hitter to reach base against Diaz was Jason Krizan, who drove a fastball down the right-field line in the fourth inning for his fourth home run of the season.

The Sea Dogs got to Erie starting pitcher Warwick Saupold in the top of the fourth. Sean Coyle and Stefan Welch drew walks before Keury De La Cruz lifted a single down the left-field line, just out of the reach of the left fielder, shortstop and third baseman.

Welch and Saupold were teammates for Australia in the World Baseball Classic.

David Chester, a 6-foot 5-inch, 270-pound first baseman who was promoted to Double-A last week, crushed an opposite-field grand slam to give Portland a 4-0 lead.

“It felt great to come through because there were situations early in the season that I didn’t come through for my team,” Chester said. “It was a huge win for us and saved the series. It also made the bus ride a lot easier to enjoy.

“My approach was to drive the ball deep into the outfield to bring a run in and keep it off the ground to avoid a double play.”
SPINNERS

Game Story

Raymel Flores's speed on the basepaths allowed Mauricio Dubon to get him home with a bloop single in the top half of the 12th inning, and the Lowell Spinners spoiled the home opener of the Connecticut Tigers, 2-1, Wednesday night at Dodd Stadium.

The game was scoreless until the seventh inning when Lowell (3-3) broke through as Deiner Lopez tripled into deep center field and scored on a groundout by Alixon Suarez. Bryan Hudson then greeted Connecticut reliever Johan Belisario with a triple but was stranded at third to end the inning.

Connecticut (2-4) tied the game in the bottom of the seventh as Spinner reliver Rob Smorol loaded the bases on a single and two walks, and then lost right fielder Ismael Salgado on a 3-2 fastball that was low to force in a run to tie the game.

The game stayed tied until the 12th when Suarez reached on an error by the third baseman. Flores entered the game to pinch run for him and promptly stole second and then third before Dubon looped a single into left field that easily scored Flores with what proved to be the winning run.

Lowell starter Jason Garcia retired 10 of the first 11 Connecticut hitters, cruising through five shutout innings, allowing just two hits while striking out five. In his two starts this season, he has struck out 10 batters in nine innings. Smorol struggled in the seventh with his control but his other two innings of relief were stellar. Oscar Perez (1-0, 0.00), a converted catcher, retired eight of the last nine hitters he faced to collect his first win in a Spinners uniform with four scoreless innings, striking out two while limiting the Tigers to just two hits.

Andres Torres, signed by the Red Sox as a minor league free agent on June 11th, made his debut with the Lowell Spinners tonight as the oldest player to ever put on a uniform with the club at 36 years old and 4 months, one month older than Bret Saberhagen when he made a rehab start for the Spinners in 1997. In his debut, Torres was 1-for-3 with a double in his first a-bat.
