Not PORTES HEAD?
Take it to the nicknames thread lol

This was my 1st substantive Portes post from last July...

Ovis Portes was making his first appearance of the season & struck out the side on 10 pitches. I feel pretty ahead of the curve having him on my list, even if he was 204th lol

Portes is a 6'4 18 y/o right-hander from St. John's, Antigua

He signed for $25k in March '22 & put up a 1.21 ERA last season in the DSL in 22.1 innings. 17 hits, 11 walks & 28 strikeouts.

I had Figueroa #152 & Batista #186.

Really looking forward to SP's asessement when they get to scouting him. The "lots of remaining projection" for a guy that already hits 98 along with the "throws strikes, misses bats" is pretty encouraging

SP thinks it's going to be Gambrell for Worcester, Coffey for Portland, & Rogers for Greenville.

& I'm too lazy to do my own research, so we'll go with that.

Just realized they are also giving a day off to the guy who has homered 6 straight days. Seems crazy.

Not a lot of pitching going on in this Greenville game.

They're tied at 10 in the 8th. Every starter has 1 or 2 hits.

Nice to see Roman back. I wonder if they all learned a lesson from Marcelo last year and are focusing more on staying healthy instead of playing through injury.
The big three are all having great years and it should have all of us salivating. This is what it looks like.

Anthony has really woken up. A 144 wrc+ in AA at 20 years old will do.

I also really think they made the same change for Romy that they did for Connor Wong. Straight up the stance, remove the extra timing mechanism, just step and hit. And now the guy is striking out only 17% of the time after striking out 25% or more his entire career. Obviously he could regress, but I'm kind of excited to see what he can do.

Greenville lost 11-10.

Some not great pitching with Isaac Stebens being the biggest offender (6 runs on 5 hits & 4 walks in 1.1 IP).

Dalton Rogers does not seem to have taken any steps forward since last season. He made it through 3 innings allowing 2 runs on 72 pitches.

In 10 games this season, 8 starts & 2 bulk relief appearances, Rogers has averaged 3.7 innings per game... even worse than last year's very inefficient 4.2 IP/S. He is walking 7 hitters per 9 innings. Seems like they need to try something new with him. Maybe try making him a 2-inning closer or something?

After Rogers & Stebens, Zach Fogell came in & walked 4 in 2 innings, allowing 1 unearned run.

Reidis Sena allowed 2 runs, 1 earned, on 4 hits & a walk in 2 innings, & Adam Smith came in & got the last 2 outs.

Chacon 2-5, 2b, sb

Romero 1-5, 2b

Lira 1-4

Liendo 1-5

This seems like a good time to air out my beef with Ahbram Liendo... who I have repeatedly shown irrational love for...

He does not seem capable of fielding the ball.

2B - 18 games, 5 errors
SS - 9 games, 4 errors
3B - 19 games, 7 errors
Total - 46 games, 16 errors

He's also striking out 37.1% of the time.

On the bright side, he's only 20 & is very, very fast. Seems like they're going to have to try him in the OF soon, though.

Pretty wild that we have three prospects that were dubbed The Big Three just setting everyone up for some level of disappointment and instead they are basically all having the exact season you’d hope for.

Teel especially, flashing the power that was maybe a primary question mark for him.

Yup. Mayer with the 137 wrc+, Teel at 156, and Roman at 144. Only complaint I could imagine to have about Anthony and Teel is the K rates around 25% leave something to be desired. But then Anthony is only 20 and Teel is only 22, and both of them have sophisticated plate approaches that get them into lots of 2 strikes counts, so it's not like they have a Kavadas problem.

Isaac Coffey came in & pitched a 1-2-3 3rd.
Coffey ended up pitching 3 scoreless innings with 1 walk & 4 strikeouts.

Felix Cepeda came in for the 6th & allowed 4 earned runs.

Wyatt Olds settled things back down going 6 up, 6 down in the 7th & 8th with a strikeout.

Christopher Troye continued his season long struggles in the 9th, allowing a run on a hit & 2 walks - lowering his ERA to 11.42 but raising his bb/9 to 10.4.

Portland won 10-5.
