Kyed is reporting Hughlett is on the practice squad. He may be the LS or they may be in a bidding war (of sorts) for Kevin McDemott or another roster casualty.

They secured a LS and are either still trying to determine who to cut to make room for him on the 53 or looking around for a better option. Either way, Rob Ninkovich won't be snapping on Sunday.soxfan121 said:

100% correct. BB has secured an asset he is comfortable with as a LS on the PS so he's covered. Another shoe to drop here.RedOctober3829 said:They secured a LS and are either still trying to determine who to cut to make room for him on the 53 or looking around for a better option. Yeah. They know what they have in Aiken (he's fine, but can be improved). Hughlett gets a couple days practice this week. If he looks good, they cut someone from the 53-man and promote him. If he doesn't, they drop him from the PS and re-sign Aiken.soxfan121 said:
I might have gone with "because it was empty?" but yours works, too.
I won't be surprised if Hughlett is the snapper; I won't be surprised if someone else they sign later today or this week is the snapper. I will only be surprised - as RO says - if Ninkovich is the snapper.
The Patriots have jettisoned a lot of age this offseason - Adrian Wilson, Gregory, Mankins, Will Smith, James Anderson, Hartsock, Collie, Andre Carter, Tommy Kelly, Sopoaga. But they seem to have fewer rookies than normal - they cut 3 of 9 draft picks, and Malcolm Butler is the only UDFA who made the initial 53 man (though Tyms is on it but suspended and the added Quarles and Gaston). Even the practice squad is rookie-light, with just 3 rookies among the 10 players on the squad.SeoulSoxFan said:
The annual roster "age" study is out, via Philly.com. Patriots are remarkably consistent, staying at 11th youngest in the league.
Not a good new for the rest of the AFC teams -- BB has stocked this team with not only the most talented players but also one of the youngest (and woe to the Raiders and the Giants -- ouch).

So now they have six safeties. Seems like a lot and that another shoe at that position could drop.mabrowndog said:
Even if our friend above had otherwise made sense -- which he didn't -- the gratuitous age based knock was pretty hilarious. I mean he's 62 dammit!
He's lost his GM fastball. I'm sorry, but he has. Dude is 62 years old. Is it blasphemy to think he could be fucking up here and there? Because I think he is.

Yeah, I have to think one of Jones, Wilson, or Chung is gone by Sunday.TheoShmeo said:So now they have six safeties. Seems like a lot and that another shoe at that position could drop.

nope Denver http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_McDermott_(American_football)SeoulSoxFan said:The Great Long Snapper Debate of 2014 has another twist. @rapsheet reports a possible Patriots option Kevin McDermott is signing with the Seattle PS.
Probably a mix of things. Some guys may come to practice and not work out. These two DL had to be put on the 53, probably less likely they get claimed today than earlier in the week and they can be stashed on the PS with financial incentives to stay. Health assessments can change during the week. I also think BB sometimes picks up guys in part for scout team characteristics, possible once they work on some things in practice the player become less useful.dcmissle said:Any insights into the lightning rounds of musical chairs? I assume they come in at least partially known, and I'm hard pressed to figure how a practice or two would lead to shifts at this late date to warrant them gone. I'm referring mostly to the 53-man here not the PS. What gives?
@MikeReiss: Long snapper Danny Aiken is present at Gillette Stadium this morning, an indication that he has been re-signed by Patriots.

As SF121 pointed out, we already discussed this, but 2-10 is low. The fewest snaps Aiken played last year in a game was 5, and he played as many as 15. All in all, he played in about 33% of the special teams snaps (178 / 545). He played exactly as much as Ryan Allen and just a little less than Gostkowski.doctormoist said:It must kill guys like BB to hold one precious roster spot for a LS who might get in 2-10 plays a game. I think consistently long snapping accurately is harder than your post makes it seem. The long snap comes at critical times, so those 2-10 plays are extremely crucial. BB always says that there are 3 phases to the game, and he values holders and snappers immensely(see Walter, Ken).doctormoist said:It must kill guys like BB to hold one precious roster spot for a LS who might get in 2-10 plays a game. In the doctor's defense, he's probably discounting XP attempts, even though missing those due to a bad snap would be painful.Super Nomario said:As SF121 pointed out, we already discussed this, but 2-10 is low.
