Long answer is, like soccer, diving has been a problem league-wide for about 15-20 years (see de Montreal, Canadiens). Coming out of the big lockout, it got way worse, so they decided to create an unsportsmanlike penalty for it. Problem is, it’s extremely rare to see it called alone, and if they’re serious about rooting out diving, I have no idea why it’s always been that way. But yeah, it’s almost like refs need a reason to penalize the other team if someone dove, else no one knows the reason the player dove.
