Memorial Day Game from 1975:

Especially odd about this game was that Bill Lee was called on for a one batter stint in the 8th (got Mike Hargrove to pop up). Rick Wise was the lucky winner that day as the Sox broke a 5 - 5 tie in the top of the 8th after Wise had given up a 2-run HR to Willie Davis to tie the game up. Dick Drago got the five out save.

Series 18: ORIOLES at SOX
Dropped 2 out of 3 to the Brew Crew. That blows.
The Red Sox continue their Fenway Park woes.
We know that the season will have highs and lows,
but with game at home, our frustration grows.
It’s time to get tougher; to get on our toes;
to be smooth with our gloves; to make better throws;
to swing at third strikes and not stand there and pose;
to show we belong here, so they don’t foreclose.
Division rivals arrive. Everyone knows
we need to wake up. There is no time to doze.
Let’s protect our home turf and perform like pros.
Let's chop Baltimore. Let’s defeather the O’s.

That '75 team was the one that made me fall in love with the Sox.
Looking at the lineup though, I am surprised that Burleson got to hit higher in the lineup than Yaz, Lynn, Rice, and Evans.
Meanwhile, Cora keeps penciling Cooper and Smith in the same lineup. I get that one of them needs to play first, but are there not better options for DH?

Memorial Day Game from 2004 (20 years ago and coincidentally also against the Orioles... spoiler alert... the 1975 Memorial Day Game had a better ending).

The game was rescheduled from an early season rain out thus alleviating a pet peeve that I have about not being about to watch the Sox on a holiday.

Orioles had a 2 - 0 lead going into the top of the sixth when Derek Lowe, as he was wont to do, had the wheels come off to make a close game a laugher giving up seven runs, all earned while facing five batters and recording no outs. I don't remember this game but most likely started up the grill at that point.

That raises an interesting question: What would that day's batting order look like with the way teams do it today, as opposed to the "traditional" way employed in 75?

Same here. '75 was when I first really started to follow the Sox. Burleson had an OBP of .331 at the time, so my guess was that his job was to get on base and let either Lynn, Yaz, or Rice knock him in. Didn't happen this game but that was a tough 4-5-6 to get through in '75. Evans was more glove than bat but was a better hitter than either Griffin or Blackwell (batted 8th and 9th). Fisk started the season on the DL, so Blackwell was a placeholder. Griffin wasn't the same player after getting beaned by Nolan Ryan and lost his starting job when the Sox acquired Denny Doyle..

Lynn
Burleson
Yaz
Rice
Carbo
Evans
Petrocelli
Griffin
Blackwell

That bottom three was pretty much a black hole in the line up, so it's basically how to reshuffle the top six. Lynn would have been lead-off. There is no way that Carbo would have batted in the 3rd or 4th slots.

WRT Burleson batting second, that was the traditional way to construct the top of an order back then. The second hitter was a "scrappy" hitter who could move the runner along, hit to right, bunt, etc. Like a Burleson. Today, it's more often than not your best all around hitter, your Cory Seager, Kyle Tucker, Ohtani, Soto or Judge, etc. Back then, the best all around hitters for power and average batted 3rd or 4th.

Burleson still second? I might move Evans up

Petrocelli was near the end of his career then, but he was a career 108 OPS+ hitter.

I had a poster of Burleson on my wall. There is zero chance I would have dropped him out of the top of the order.

Yeah. That was one of the sad parts of '76 for me with him getting DFA'd. The thing with that roster, Yaz and Rico were the holdovers from '67 and looked ancient in comparison to the rest of the starting line-up, but at least Yaz could still rake.

1967 was a great year that re-woke all of NE to the Red Sox. Would have been greater if Bob Gibson had been pitching for some other team (unless he took that team to the top also). Petrocelli was a favorite of mine. Went to a game in the early 70s with some coworkers which he ended with a walkoff hit off the monster.

My poem was written quickly and I somehow thought the Sox were at home today. Lol. Win anyway. And defend the home turf another day.

"Strike Three Looking" should be the title of the 2024 Season Documentary

I really think when all is said and done, Grissom is a name that will be remembered very favorably.
