What's the overall impression after seeing the whole game? Have you watched him much before?
I had not seen him live until tonight. I was shocked he is so small and I knew full well that he was in the 5'10"-5'11" range. You see pics like the one below and its obvious he's a strong kid and is developed, thighs and upper body. But from 30 rows up he looks like the kid who delivers the paper. The uniform hangs on him, he looks frail in a uniform.
On the field, he was impressive. He's one of those guys who just looks ready to hit when he steps in the box. Good stance, loaded, ready, takes really good hacks. Bat speed is impressive. Very controlled. The outfield plays I was referring to in the first tweet post were early in the game. On the first one it was a sharp liner he had to come in on. Looking back, I think he played it on one hop on purpose. If it got by him, it would have been a triple, so he probably didn't lay out for it on purpose. Looked tentative, but may have been by design. The second one was more of a dying quail style liner. Hung in the air longer and it looked like he pulled up when he may have caught it if he was more aggressive. No danger in laying out for that one as the LF would have had his back if it got down. Later in the game he had three balls over his head, all hit hard and he went back on those with ease. One he actually had to turn and catch it over his other shoulder, and he made that move with like 5-6 strides left and the change was effortless. Looked really good. Reads going back were good and his speed is impressive. Glides to the ball like JBJ. The other one was a deep shot in the gap he ran down like it was nothing. One of those balls no one thought he'd track down. A third got down, but it was a smoked liner by Ian Happ dead center and he nearly ran it down. Would have been an amazing catch had he made it, and his effort was so good he had a leaping/running stab at a ball no one should have a shot at.
These guys are playing as billed in my opinion. Mondaca was just toying with the pitchers. In the first, he got on with a HBP. He takes two crazy long leads and goes back to the bag standing up like there is no way he's getting picked. Then he calls time out and rearranges the dirt where he's taking his lead. Moves the dark clay back over the lighter sand, spends a good bit of time mixing it all up with his feet, then makes a distinctive zig zag pattern in the dirt like he's marking off distance by stride or something. Tells the ump he's good, takes his lead, and then the pitcher balks on a pick move. I can't imagine he's at this level much longer.
I was impressed with Longhi and Dubon, but I'll pay more attention to them tonight. Was also watching the draft on my phone.
