I was always taught that the infielder should yield to the outfielder on popups. They're coming in on the ball and are generally more adept at catching fly balls. I don't really understand why the SS would have priority in that situation.

That's what I thought. Maybe SS didn't hear him making the call.

I think solely because he called for it early and aggressively and was right there. At that point, it's his ball.
