I’m disappointed. The results clearly haven’t been good since the WC break. The attack has been anemic. I think they’ve really missed what Gallagher brought them last year, and haven’t figured out how to play around it, and I suppose that partly rests on the manager. Maybe the seeming regression of Mateta and Eduoard do too. But also, Palace hasn’t kept up with the relentless arms race that is the PL, and that’s certainly not PV’s fault. It’s going to be even tougher to generate offense next season with Zaha almost definitely gone.
It’s commendable they’ve stayed in the league for as long as they have. It seemed like they had ambition to advance from there, and Vieira was part of that, and did seem to help immensely with the recruiting they did do. But it’s also got to be super-frustrating to see clubs like Brentford and Fulham challenging for European spots (to say nothing of Brighton), while Palace get dragged into another relegation fight. I have no idea who they are going to get better than Vieira, and will likely end up with someone worse, despite the relatively attractive roster and situation. But this team’s problems aren’t going to be fixed by an Allardyce or Pulis shoring up the defense to scrap out draws to stay above water.
TL;DR - Not the move I would have made, but it’s not my money on the line, and I guess I understand.
