How come we can‘t guys like that?Old friend Daniel Bard is in for the US.
Was he supposed to have somebody warming from the moment Bard entered the game? He only faced four batters (and the minimum is three). How in the world did DeRosa not have anyone ready before now?!
After he walked the leadoff guy and the second guy got a hit, it seems like a good time to get the pen up in an elimination game. Was he supposed to have somebody warming from the moment Bard entered the game? He only faced four batters (and the minimum is three).
I'm gonna say no. Otherwise he wouldn't be there. Lots of good US pitchers opted out (or were/are hurt or returning from injury). Why is Bard even on this team? He's creeping up on 38 years old, and he's had exactly one season below 4.20 xFIP in his last 10+ years. Is there really no one better than him who could pitch for USA?
thats the problem with the tournament - it’s not really the best players from each country. If team USA had its best arms, would a single pitcher on this roster still be on the team?I'm gonna say no. I mean, the fact that said season came last year might have a little to do with it. He was legit good in 2022.Why is Bard even on this team? Thing is, it is the best players from each country...except the US. Plenty of quality pitchers elsewhere: Ohtani, Darvish, Alcantara, Urias, Javier, Perez, Berrios, etc. LA Times had an interesting take on it the other day. https://www.latimes.com/sports/story/2023-03-13/united-states-pitchers-fan-growth-wbc-mlbthats the problem with the tournament - it’s not really the best players from each country. They've been.... not great to my eye.The U.S. not sending their best umpires either, it appears.
Meanwhile Miles Mikolas, one of the few competent starters on the roster, gets 2 mop-up innings against Canada (after being dicked around by DeRose) and nothing else.Thing is, it is the best players from each country...except the US.
