NHL bans Pride stick tape. I don't understand this at all.

https://theathletic.com/4946564/2023/10/10/nhl-pride-tape-ban/

NHL players won’t be allowed to put Pride-themed tape on their sticks while on the ice this season as part of a decision made by the board of governors in June, multiple league sources have confirmed to The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun.
Outsports first reported the news.
Brian Burke is very disappointed.

Was the Pride stick tape banned or all non black/white tape?

Fake edit…. My bad. Just click on link in the Athletic. Pride tape and jerseys…. Holy crap. Disgraceful.

I agree with other people, but what irks me is that they’re reasoning isn’t logical, nor applied with equity.

If they allow military appreciation night stuff, do the Russian players wear that gear? I can’t imagine Putin being happy about that.

The whole idea that families in Russia might get some reprisals is pretty silly already in my view, but it’s highlighted when this excuse is used here.

I am disappointed in this decision.

Supposedly, if the NHL sticks to what they wrote in the second or third clarifying memo (I lost track), there will be no specialty jerseys on ice at all (warmups, game, and maybe even practices)... so no situation where a player could be singled out for chosing to not wear them. We shall see if that standard is kept though.

The more interesting one is it does seem like they will still allow coaches/bench staff to wear ribbons/etc (I assume cancer ribbons and poppies for Remembrance day)...What's going to be interesting here is what about slogans or words? Cause some players in the past had stuff written on sticks/skates... so are they going to police all of that too?

NHL is really stepping in it with this whole setup.

I would love it if the Bruins players defied these bans and the organization covered the fines.
This was my thought as well, and we have the locker room that could/would do it. This decision will be applauded by like 10% of the fanbase and piss off 60%. It's the idea that corporations don't care about social issues, but caring about them is how you improve a company's imagine(make more money). I considered the NHL second the the NBA in being progressive, this is just a terrible self own

Oh wow... that's just terrible. I can't imagine there isn't some mea culpa put out by the league at some point in the near future.

The NHL will suspend unsigned Ottawa Senators centre Shane Pinto 41 games for violating league gambling rules, multiple sources told Sportsnet.

Critically, the league did not accuse of Pinto of wagering on NHL games, as a memo sent in March 2022 reminded all league and club personnel — including players — that wagering on any NHL game, even where legal, is “absolutely prohibited,” and will “constitute conduct that is dishonourable, prejudicial to, or against the welfare of the League or the game of hockey” under the NHL’s constitution.

They make them wear gambling ads on their fucking helmets. This simulation is so stupid.
Right? Like I get a ban gambling on your own team, but leagues takes the millions up millions of ad dollars from these sportsbooks websites and even works them into the pregames. You see at least one ad per break. I haven't really been a gambler(I enjoyed it if it was there, been to a casino like 5 times, last was over 15 years ago) and I even caught myself thinking for a split second that picking a parlay would be fun while sitting on my couch. It feels really dirty to watch and I can't imagine how much damage this is going to people with even a minimal gambling itch

American ex-NHLer Adam Johnson dies from injury in UK game

Johnson played for the Nottingham Panthers of the Elite Ice Hockey League in the UK. During a game at the Sheffield Steelers, his throat was slashed by a skate blade. I read about it on an English soccer board by someone who was there- they evacuated the arena in Sheffield ~ 8000 people because it was so horrific.

Terrible. Throat slashes are rare but it seems like they could be avoided if players wore neck guards. They're not cool and maybe not comfortable either, but it seems like the benefit outweighs the cost.

There's a video on YouTube of the incident, apparently shot with the same camera that keeps capturing Bigfoot, but probably best not to watch it.

It got taken down off the Everton site where I learned of the incident.

How often does this happen? I’m don’t remember hearing of it before. I don’t follow hockey closely now but did for many years.

Well, Clint Malarchuk is an example I can think of off the top of my head. That was years ago but he almost died. It seems like I hear about something like this at one level of hockey or another every few years or so.

Just the other day, Jakub Lauko got cut in the face with a skate (and nearly lost an eye). That easily could have been a blade to the neck.

EDIT: A little research tells me that Richard Zednik of the Florida Panthers also suffered a blade to the neck that cut his carotid artery in 2008.

Ohhhh, that’s a bad video. Guy went off balance from missing a check and his foot flew up like a counterclockwise roundhouse. Total freak accident.

Can one be crafted that isn’t more of a threat than a defense to non-goalies? I feel like having hard plastic so close to the throat could end poorly for people flying around the ice being checked into the boards and what not.

I was thinking something like this (but designed just for the neck and not as bulky).

High school player in my town died this way 2 years ago. West Point player had it happen last year, but luckily the laceration was to a branch, not the carotid, and they were able to save him. It’s rare, but it does happen. Seems like maybe once every year or two at some level. USA Hockey still doesn’t mandate neck guards, although it recommends them. CT youth hockey started requiring them and enforcing it after the local kid died.

My mom used to force me to wear a neck guard when I was a kid, and I haaaaaated it. This was in the 90’s, so hopefully they’ve improved, but they were bulky, thick, hot pieces of thick material that were Velcro’d in place. I stopped wearing it when I got to high school and couldn’t have been happier.

As a better option, I’m envisioning some sort of reinforced turtle neck undershirt. I would think that a thin piece of Kevlar or something in the turtle neck portion would go a long way to preventing freak accidents like this one.

Edit: Googling shows me that this seems to already exist. I don’t think there’s much argument against mandating something like this.

As of yet, USA Hockey has not wanted to regulate/certify neck guards like they do with helmets and other gear.

Im in CT also and have been the "neck guard nazi" guy for years. My kid is not allowed on the ice without one and I call out every kid I see who isn't wearing one. I cringe whenever we play MA or other state teams where it's not regulated.

TJ Oshie"s company Warroad makes a protective base layer that a few of the kids on my team wear that I'm guessing more will start wearing following this incident.

I literally am terrified that I’ll see this kind of thing happen in a live game, one of those things that’s buried in the back of my head as I watch.

not going to link- it’s pretty hateful stuff & don’t want to platform it- but seeing a bunch of stuff that this was intentional? It’s got an ugly cast to it since the Sheffield player whose skate cut Johnson’s throat is black.

I had a hard time seeing intent. I’m not going to watch the video again, once was-too much.

I’m not linking to it since it includes the video looping in the corner of the split screen, but Sean Avery is out there saying intentional kick by the guy to try to get Johnson with the worst possible outcome. So like a dirty play that went wrong.

So this is going to be a thing.

I've watched that video multiple times since reading that nonsense, and there's just no way to see any intent there unless you want to. It's a freak tragic accident and that's it.

F**k Avery, he's just a piece of human garbage trying to be relevant.

The National Hockey League today announced that the Ottawa Senators will forfeit a first-round draft pick for their role in the July 2021 trade of Player Evgenii Dadonov from the Senators to the Vegas Golden Knights and the subsequent, invalidated March 2022 Dadonov trade between the Golden Knights and the Anaheim Ducks.

Ottawa will forfeit its first-round draft pick in one of the 2024, 2025 or 2026 Drafts. The determination as to which pick will be forfeited will be made by Ottawa within 24 hours of the conclusion of the Draft Lottery for that year. The League will have no further comment on the matter.

So new Sens owner Michael Andlauer just had a presser and started with something along the lines of “I don’t know why I got this dumped on my lap.” Then, he took a shot at the league itself.

View: https://twitter.com/frank_seravalli/status/1719801295039586660?s=46&t=QgPlur015YjYmVsNzWFFfg

For those that can’t get tweets, it’s Frank Sevarelli quoting Andlauer, saying he was told during his negotiations to purchase the Sens the league’s investigations into the Dadanov affair and the Pinto accusation were a non-issue and that this was intentional to give the Melnyk estate the best possible selling price.
