I think he might be trying to play the ball with his back foot at the absolute last second, after it gets away from the other player. He changed his approach after committing to the initial challenge, which is why it was so haphazard.

All that being said, he still made studs-first contact with his leading foot, over the ball, and (way) above the ankle. All 3 criteria add up to what should have been a very easy straight red card.

Atletico is a bit short-handed for today's match against United with three of the team's strongest players out. Koke, the team's captain and the glue that tends to keep it all together, is out with an injury. Joining him are Cunha, who is injured, and Carrasco, who is suspended for pushing a player in the last match.

Since Griezmann is just coming back from injury, I suspect we'll see Angelito Correa and Joao Felix up front. The real question is if the backs -- most likely Vrsalkjo and Reinildo Mandava -- can hold their own against United, and if the midfield can keep the pace.

I'm not sure in this case I yearn for the away goal rule or am happy that it's no longer a thing.

Atletico, for the umpteenth time time year, conceded one goal on one shot. What a drag, especially since Atletico scored an early goal and hit two off the post. Overall, given the rather mediocre performance Atleti has displayed this year, I'm excited by this match and hopeful that Atletico can put forth a strong second-leg effort. Lodi, in particular, was outstanding.

That’s the easy part. Renouncing the Gazprom sponsorship deal will be the painful part.

Not to mention the fact they haven’t cancelled - and have no plans to cancel - the upcoming games involving Russian teams ( Europa league I believe)

Mind you those are away games. I can’t conceive of forcing a team to travel to Russia right now. They really should just have them (the Russian team) forfeit

I'd prefer they at least be given the option of playing their "home" games at a neutral site. Sports is the most important outlet for so many people, and I always get disheartened when politics interrupts sports. That's not to say I don't like when PLAYERS or leagues stand up for some principles that matter to them, but rather situations like a friggin war interrupting UEL.

Shalke have already dumped Gazprom, and their financial situation was already precarious due to the knock-on effects of COVID and relegation. It should be a lot less painful for UEFA to do the right thing here.

Liverpool with a couple of nice chances - Matip & VVD - but nothing to show for it. They're waiting for Inter to open themselves up, which the visitors will have to do in the second half.

I like that shade of blue for the Inter numbers.

Oh oh oh - sustained pressure by Liverpool leads to a loose ball dropping to Salah at the penalty spot with the net wide open....and he pings it off the post.

Arsenal DNA there by Alexis.

Thought the decision was harsh given the game context. All these cards given to players on the followthrough of their kicks are kind of ridiculous. You kick the ball and your leg will go places afterwards and you can't really control that. It will inevitably also end up studs up at times in that follow through. Sometimes the stars will just align where a player puts his foot or ankle in the space where your foot pretty much has to travel. There really isn't much Alexis could have done other than not kick a 50-50 ball in the first place.

Mind you the first yellow should have been a red

Yeah.. I'm not sure what a player is supposed to do when they kick the ball while sliding. I understand if it were an unnatural motion or if there was even some sort of malice in it, but it looked completely natural even in slow-mo.. and the amount of power he actually had left was minimal at the end of his slide.

Watching Real-PSG, my general thought is that any of City, Liverpool, or Chelsea would smash these sides. There is quality all over the pitch but the level of defensive intensity and time on the ball allowed is shocking.

I'm not even watching yet, but I think it's hard to say that regardless. With so much quality all over the pitch, any 1v1 matchup could swing a match. IOW, MANC might be better than PSG at 8/11 positions and have better tactics for a match, but if Mbappe is skinning Cancelo repeatedly it doesn't really matter as long as PSG can reasonably cope with MANC's superiority in the MF and attack.

This could just be a cagey affair with Real not wanting to get exposed and commit numbers forward until forced to do so. And similarly, PSG doesn't have to seek out a goal as they snuck by with a 1-0 at home in the first leg.

Anything can happen in this competition and Guardiola's foibles in the CL knockouts are real, but I would have City as a big favorite over PSG. I don't think they even have better players but the difference in intensity and organization is pretty striking. Watching PSG-Madrid is like a throwback to an earlier age in football when teams just took turns having possession and letting their star players try things offensively while the other side dropped deep and kind of jogged around.

Hard for me to rate anyone higher than Mo Salah at the moment, but Mbappe is so ridiculously good.

I cannot believe that Carvajal has only 30. I know he's been with Real Madrid for a decade, but it really feels like that guy is older than Kroos and Modric.

As an aside, Real Madrid clearly has some impressive young talent, but the team is going to have to get younger in the next year or two.

Donnarumma with a gigantic mistake. Great overall CF play by Benzema; Real with a lifeline here.

Benzema is a world class asshole, but he has been underrated for many years playing next to Rondaldo and not getting the national team spotlight. He is a prototype for the modern CF.

Karmic punishment for underrating and undercutting CONCACAF's finest goalkeeper instead of just letting Keylor Navas cook.

(fun part is I can say that no matter what happens in this game)

I was about to be snide about Vinicius not having a left foot and probably still could be because that was sad, but damned if Modric didn't make it work anyways.
