He;'s probably my least-liked non-Jets player in the past ten years. Atleast this season will be a bit more interesting!

I love it. Lots of time to heal and zero downside risk. If he stinks, they'll cut him.

Only 2 games played last year mean incentives all should be NLTBE so it is a cap friendly way to do it.

At that price, why not?

I was as excited to see what they had with Stid as the next guy, but if he needs time this provides a way better alternative than Hoyer for no more money.

Actually impressed with Cam for stepping into this situation. If he's healthy, Belichick could really work some magic there.

I mean it’s still the Patriots. It’s not as if he’s going to be there long if he sucks. If he is pretty good, well then...

Ugh! Does this mean Belichick doesn't think so highly of Stidham after all? This doesn't excite me at all.

Not a fan of this move. I’d be stunned if Cam was even the same player prior to the injury. As long as there is zero guaranteed money it’s worth a look.

I think it means he signed a guy who was a very good starting qb 2 years ago for the league minimum

Nah, they definitely love Stidham. It’s just a low risk high reward move, can’t question the talent Cam has. Especially when you consider it’s for league minimum, Cam wants to prove himself.

I don't think so. Stidham could have been drafted first overall and you'd still want some level of non-Hoyer insurance kicking around. Mind you, given the cap, I was fine with that. However I feel about Newton there is no downside to this and I don't think that it reflected on Stidham negatively whatsoever.

I'll definitely be hoping Stidham wins the job and Cam gets cut. Not optimistic Newton is the future QB of the next successful Patriots team.

It's really hard to be upset over a cheap deal for Cam Newton. Worst case he isn't ready and gets cut.
Worst case is that he beats out Stidham and the Pats win 7-9 games, so we never get to see Stidham play but we don't draft high enough in the first round to get one of the better QBs.

The attraction of Stidham is that if he's good you've got a potential long term solution at QB and if not good you're well positioned to address QB going forward in a different way.

Good price but was hoping for Stidham.

This also probably makes it less likely for Trevor in 2021

Reiss:
Early thoughts on Cam Newton to Patriots: His willingness to accept a modest 1-year deal creates low-risk, high-reward situation for team to pounce on. Not necessarily a reflection of how team views Jarrett Stidham, in my view, but a chance to bolster the depth chart.

The cap considerations make this really make sense. The chances of the Patriots getting a guy like this with less than $700k in cap space was pretty much impossible, except for the fact that Cam’s 2019 makes it so they can give him attainable incentives but not pay cap money for them until 2021. It really is a perfect scenario for this team right now.

Holy crap what a move. At that price there’s literally no downside. Unlike the AB signing where “there is no downside” included huge dollars handicapping the team once they cut him, there’s no downside here at all.

It is a one year, incentive laden deal. There is no downside here and the hand wringing is odd. Brady has left, but Belichick hasn't. If he's not good or there are other problems, he gets cut and we move on.

where I was last at
I'm not a Newton fan. although when he was healthy he gave the Pats headaches.

Maybe its a Stidham motivator.
Or a nifty BB backdoor move to snag a comp pick

absolutely hate this move.

If Stidham is bad, they can just draft a replacement. There's no point to a stop gap on this team (and if there were, the stop gap should have just continued to be Brady). Unless Cam is very okay being a bench player, this might be the move of the BB era I dislike most. There's almost no upside here. If Cam plays out of his mind, he leaves in a year. If he sucks, it's at Stidham's loss.

Only way I can get behind this is if it is as a backup.

Insanity. I'm happy. I'm surprised. Can't believe we got em.
Real thoughts, not a fan of the player but if Bill wins #7 with Cam he can just drop the mic on the rest of the league.

It’s crazy to hear people talking about tanking like it was a real option for this year’s Pats. BB didn’t spend 20 years building this culture to piss it away for a high draft pick. Besides, the Pats wouldn’t be in the running for a top-5 pick in any circumstances — there’s too much talent on D.

If you accept that BB’s goal is to make this year’s team the best it can be, there’s nothing not to like about this signing.

Especially since he signed with Dallas

Or did I miss a joke?
Kinda both?

The real test here is if Cam is anywhere near healthy and if he can be coached by Bill and Josh.
You also have to assume Cam and Jared fit a new playbook that includes a lot more motion from the QB position.
