He's been so awesome.

Not to immediately shift the subject, but the exploits of Fernando & The Pads this year have also brought a regular return of Giddy Don Orsillo into my life. Which has been a boon.

Was it ever figured out why Nesn got rid of Orsillo?
There was too much banter, comedic moments, laughter and classic moments between him and Remy, for example the pizza slice throwing incident, NESN prefers more of a bland, stale, dry white toast approach.

Ergo, Dave O'Brien.

That’s the first time I saw the GS pitch. It didn’t even seem like that much a meatball. Not that it matters to me. Feast on whatever pitch on whatever count, but that wasn’t on a tee or anything.

Also, Tatís has an accent I believe, to the extent we can spell names authentically.

Tatis is everything that is right. If you don’t want to be embarrassed playing baseball, don’t let yourself get embarrassed playing baseball.

Changed the thread to an overall Padres thread per E5 Yaz's suggestion, now magically the Orsillo talk is on topic. :)

I get big Ken Griffey, Jr. vibes from Tatís - right down to the genealogy and naming.

Seven wins in a row for SD, longest streak since 2013 for them.

The Bastard Machado has started to heat up, and even Hosmer has been useful. Do they have enough pitching?

I changed the title, so amazing that they did that after the Tatis silliness.
They hit Grand Slams in four straight games starting with that Tatis Slam (an MLB record). They took a day off and then hit another one!

My wife is a giant Padres fan (yes, they exist), and she is out of her mind right now. The team is really fun to watch and they are mashing right now.

Dinelson Lamet and Paddack are a legit #1 and #2. Kyle Davies has pitched well but after that it gets a little sketchy. Garret Richards has not pitched well after coming back from surgery but he is a solid #4. It all really depends on whether Patino or Mackenzie Gore develops fast enough.

Beyond that, in the next few years they might legitimately challenge the Dodgers if Patino and Gore hit their ceilings (always a big if).

Richards and Davies are solid. Lamet is going to be an ace. Paddack is very good. And their bullpen can be elite if healthy. Then they just need Quantrill or Morejón or someone else to step up.

Their bullpen is not elite nor healthy. Closer Kirby Yates just had elbow surgery and is done for the year. Drew Pomeranz was pitching well for them in a relief role but now he is on the IL with a shoulder strain.

They have guys with nasty stuff in Pagan and converted SS Javy Guerra (part of the trade for Kimbrel with Margot, Allen, and Asuaje) who are up and down.. Stammen is a solid veteran 7th or 8th inning guy (think poor man's Timlin) and they have a few guys with length that are more swingmen types in Perdomo and Strahm. Tim Hill is basically a LOOGY to the extent that is possible with the new rules. So they have a few parts with no anchored back end. They have bulk just not the guys to hand the ball over to when they have a lead in a close game. (Pagan and Stammen are those guys now).

I would expect them to make a move in that area especially with the injuries that just happened.

What's hilarious is this is basically the inverse of all the Kevin Towers teams of Padres past who had a great bullpen and little else.

Oops I didn’t realize Yates was done done. But, if Pomeranz comes back (and obviously he has injury history), that’s not a bad backend with Pagan and then hopefully some of the live arms pan out.

Jake Cronenworth is real fun to watch too. A 26 year old ROY candidate who came with over with Pham in the TB deal. He's been the best rookie hitter in the NL so far. OPS over 1.000.
He seems to square everything up and looks solid up the middle (mostly at 2B) but really can play anywhere in the IF. He also closed at Michgan so he could help on the mound but I guess it would need to be a blowout.

I've been a huge Padre's fan ever since I moved out to California 15 years ago. I am through the roof right now. For the first time in a long time don't like missing games. I haven't felt this way about a team since the 2007 Red Sox.

We won’t know for a while what TB got in Xavier Edwards but nice to see them give up someone as seemingly valuable as Cronenworth.

Dinelson Lamet really is a beast. His 12.95 k/9 in 14 GS would’ve been the 4th highest on record last year - coming off TJ surgery, and his 12.15 this year would rank 14th.

Its remarkable that the Padres went from being one of the worst hitting teams in baseball last year to one of the best this year. As of today, they are 4th in OPS and 6th in OBP. Their approach at the plate is completely different. For years they were aggressively swinging at any pitch that looked like a strike. This year they are working counts with patience.

Ken Rosenthal points out:

“ Padres shortstop Fernando Tatís Jr. would be the youngest MVP in baseball history if he won the National League award at 21.

Tatís, whose birthday is Jan. 2, 1999, will be 21 for the entire season. Vida Blue, the youngest player to win an MVP, turned 22 in July of 1971, the year he captured the AL award.”

Random note, for whatever it’s worth... I had a chance to talk to Ron Fowler yesterday and he told me the Padres expect to lose over $100 million this year.

They must be excited about being the only game in town next year with a championship caliber club. He really has been a good owner.

Dinelson Lamet is a bona fide ace.

7 2/3 with 6 hits no walks and 11 k’s tonight.

Padres are awesome and will probably be the team I will be rooting for during the postseason.

Looking ahead at a 2021 rotation

Clevinger
Lamet
Davies
Paddack
Then one of Patine/Gore or both??

This team should be great for the next few years, especially if Will Myers is actually learning how to lift the ball.
