Jim Bowden predicted 7/238 for Strasburg, pretty good. He had Cole at 8/288, $36M per.

Re: Gardner

Sometimes it’s about saving face, and Cashman should just tell him that the team is willing to go year by year.

That should suffice for someone nearing the end of his career. I think CC did the same for the final 2 years.

Yankees trying to trade Happ

Twelve months ago, the Yankees made veteran left-hander J.A. Happ one of their key offseason signings. After a solid 2018 divided between the Blue Jays and Yankees, New York re-upped Happ to a two-year, $34MM contract. Now, the club is “actively” seeking a taker on the trade market for the 37-year-old Happ, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports.

That contract does have a vesting option if he throw 165 innings. Which he should be able to do.

Including deferrals, the MLBPA says Strasburg’s deal is actually 7/229, less impressive than 7/245.

I highly doubt it does, we already knew they'd been shopping Happ and I actually think they likely wouldn't trade him unless they signed Cole first, so the reverse of that.

Also with the reports today that Betances will likely be looking for a one year deal to rebuild value and Didi might take one also, it feels like they might just bring everyone back (except Romine), as I guessed a few days ago. They'd be at $193 without Happ (and still counting Ellsbury), $35 for Cole and $35 (obv a guess) for Gardner/Betances/Didi, so that's $263M. Something like $90M of that is in one year deals though (Paxton/Tanaka/Ellsbury/Gardner/Betances/Didi) so they'd have plenty of room again next year and just be over for one season, then who knows what the new CBA will bring in 2022.

If they get rid of Happ, then it's a great offseason in my mind.

If they get Cole it's an amazing offseason.

If they get rid of Happ, get Cole, and bring back Betances, Didi and Gardner, well, I think they are World Series favorites.

Make it happen, Theo.

I don't know about World Series favorites (maybe?), but that would be an amazing off season. Beyond getting Cole, I'd be especially happy if Betances came back. If the three batter/finish the inning thing really happens, adding Betances to an already strong bullpen might accentuate the Yankees' bullpen advantage even more. Assuming the Yankees don't see to much of the downside of relief pitching year-to-year variability, of course.

Presented without comment, just numbers from the 2017 season (Montgomery had TJS in June 2018 and was back at the very end of 2019):

Jordan Montgomery (27 in 2020), 2.9 bWAR in 155 innings in the AL East
Gerritt Cole (30 in 2020), 2.7 bWAR in 203 innings in the NL Central

Cole has put up 12.1 bWAR in his two dominant seasons with HOU since then, I'm obviously not actually comparing the two in any serious way, but Montgomery is three years younger and did outperform Cole in his last healthy season. Montgomery would be the odd man out if NY got Cole and traded Happ once German came back if everyone was healthy, Cole/Paxton/Severino/Tanaka/German, he is the frontrunner for the 5th man during German's suspension unless NY signs Cole and inexplicably doesn't trade Happ, but Mike King and Deivi Garcia might have something to say about that too.

Mike Axisa posted a current roster tonight which I agree with except maybe I'd have Heller over Holder, Gardner signing would bump Clint back to AAA.

Heh, an example of a begrudging tweet there. "Come on, Scott, do I have to post this? Everyone knows these 'mystery team' Tweets are bullshit."

My guess is Heyman‘s head is so far up Boras’ ass that it’s amazing he was even able to type that, and any mention of a mystery team by him should be ignored.

Honestly at these price levels, it doesn't make sense for anyone but the Yankees. I read a long Angels fan thread yesterday and almost all of them would prefer that their GM split up that money and sign multiple players.

This is how I feel as well. One would think that fielding a well rounded team is in the best interest of an organization. But perhaps it’s a billionaire owner thing, and he wants to make whatever statement. Pujol’s contract is also coming off the books (2022) so perhaps that’s a consideration.

In this world, I could see Heyman taking money from Boras in exchange for social media support. Against all media rules but who would know?

This got me thinking, does Heyman have a regular gig right now? A quick google tells me that he was working for FanRag and then Fancred Sports, but the last article on Fancred from him that I see if from December of last year.

I've never been a big fan of his, but damn, the environment for sports writing seems to get worse and worse every year.

I know you're our resident expert. And hell, JA is too for that matter, though I think less recent. Maybe others. Are things as bad as they look? Can it get worse? Will it get worse?

Heyman's Twitter blurb says: "Insider at MLB Network, WFAN 660 in NYC, The Score in Chicago and Entercom radio; Co-host of Big Time Baseball podcast"

Actually The Athletic has been a savior in this area, they must have well over 100 writers at this point.

Ah, thanks Jon. I looked at his wiki and didn't consider his twitter bio. I generally stay away from twitter but for what gets posted on SOSH.

I'd rather have an expert curate that shit. Thanks for that, btw. :)

The past decade and more has been a period of transition for many journalists. I would not say things are worse. They just got more complicated. A guy like Heyman was linked to one newspaper for many years. And then the world began to change. Cable TV opened up for print reporters. Talk radio. More money. You can see how guys like Jerry Callahan and Sean McAdam adjusted in Boston.
Elite sports writers are making more money than they ever dreamed possible. Feel sorry for the rest, if you want.
As Jon noted, Heyman collects his money from various television and radio appearances. He is no longer linked to just one employer.

I have difficulty to seeing which team would trade for Happ. He was not good last year and that 17 million dollar option for 160 innings next year seems pretty bad as well. And if you dont want him to get to that innings limit/hope he doesnt get there, why trade for the right to pay him 17 mil? IDK seemed like a bad contract when it was signed and seems even worse now. They guy is 37 years old

This is all reasonable but keep in mind that people said the same stuff about Sonny Gray last year (except the age) and he had an incredible year for the Reds. Teams that have been rumored to be interested in Happ are the Rangers, Brewers, Angels, Padres, Cubs and Blue Jays.

Also if $17M is too much for Happ, NY could throw in someone like Nick Nelson because they need to clear 40 man spots anyway.

Dan Federico tweets:

“ The great @JeffPassan: "I'm never going to believe exactly what I hear in this lobby. But, everyone - and I mean everyone - at the Winter Meeting believes Gerrit Cole is going to be a New York Yankee."”

FWIW, NY’s record with and without Didi starting last year.

With Didi: 47-32, .595, 96-66 pace.

Without Didi: 56-27, .675, 109-53 pace.
