I was scanning through Kirk's tweets this morning, and he seemed more inclined to think Gustavsson was the front runner and Smith was likely to get cut. With Gustavsson not getting any significant time recently, not sure how much I buy that.
As for Smith, I haven't been very impressed. He's athletic, but his rebound control is awful and he seems to lose track of the puck at times behind the net. Rask is going to play 70 games again with someone like him behind him.

By the time they're at their peak, they're paid top dollar or are on their next team. By keeping them in juniors, Bruins management has more time to determine if they merit a big extension at either their age 22/23 or 25/26 seasons rather than at age 20. Plus, the big extension would cover their prime whereas defensemen like Doughty and Hamilton will be free agents in their late 20s.
Hit the SAP button on your tv/remote. It's meant to translate it to Spanish but NESN doesn't do it for hockey so you get just the on ice sounds.AMcGhie said:I wish that for one period, for one game a week, they'd just do it like that. I agree with EJ. Neither seemed likely to make the team this early, and I would be a little surprised if either makes next year's team. The Carlo signing seems more like a tip of the cap to him for having a great camp and having the attitude they want. It hopefully motivates someone like Zboril who was picked ahead of him and rated much higher.
As far as their young picks, I agree with them that Carlo has stood out. DeBrusk definitely has skills around the net that are tough to teach. He has very quick hands and reaction, but has a long way to go as an open space player and with getting to NHL strength. Senyshyn is a project for sure, but you can see the talent. I would not be surprised to see him put up well over a point per game in juniors this year. He's probably going to take a longer path, so it will be interesting to see how they bear out.
From an overall perspective, I think the Bruins have to be impressed with the way Morrow and C. Miller have played. Irwin has been solid as well, especially in the offensive zone, but in the games I've watched I have been very impressed with Miller and Morrow. I would not at all be surprised to see C. Miller replace K. Miller at some point in the first few months of the season. That type of mobility is invaluable in today's NHL, and C. Miller really looked much more solid than I expected in his own end. Morrow, on the other hand, looks ready to make the leap. He was the Bruins most effective defenseman to me of the bubble players. I'd like to see him starting the year in Boston in the top 6.
As for forwards, Vatrano and Ceznarik (sp?) have been really good surprises. I don't expect Koko to play much in the NHL this year, so he may be KHL bound next year when he becomes an RFA. I just didn't see him separate himself from the other young forwards on the team. Spooner has looked very good in the offensive zone, but somewhat lost in his own end. His line with Connolly and Hayes had a trouble getting hemmed in at times this preseason, but has looked good offensively. It will be interesting to see how Claude deals with Spooner's lack of defensive prowess with his linemates, as I feel he could be exposed playing with Hayes and Connolly. Not sure what else he could do though, as the Marchand-Bergeron-Eriksson and Belesky-Krejci-Pastrnak have looked very very good to me.
I'm excited for the season. They could surprise some people this year who are expecting them to challenge for the 8th spot.

All 8 remaining Dmen require waivers.
I did not think he looked very good. Felt he was a flopper who didn't have the aggressiveness style I would like to see. Also felt he was slow to read plays, and was very reactionary. Just felt like he left to much space when he moved, but he was athletic enough to make some spectacular saves this preseason. Thomas was good at it because he anticipated so well, and had the right amount of aggressiveness to the game. I didn't see that with Smith, and it felt like he played small at times. The Four Peters said:That's surprising, I thought the job was Smith's.
In the meantime, Gustavsson isn’t an ideal option as backup, but he’s the best chance Boston has to rest Tuukka Rask by having a player that the coaches (at least initially) will trust to spell. There are 11 back-to-backs on the schedule this year, which is fewer than in 2013-14. The Monster is a better goalie than some give him credit for, but he never really delivered on the promise he showed after a dominant 2008-09 campaign in Sweden before signing with Toronto as a coveted free agent that spring. Still, he’s shown he can rise to the occasion in stretches and is at least someone with an NHL track record if he ends up being needed more than just the occasional start to spell the starter. Perish the thought, but the B’s are putting themselves in position to at least have some NHL games in net in a worst case scenario, but should that come to pass, the B’s are in much bigger trouble than any of us can imagine, and it doesn’t really matter who your backup is at that point.
cshea said:Max Talbot and Jeremy Smith are on waivers. I assume Smith clears and goes to Providence, but I'm not sure that the plan is for Talbot. Anywho, I do believe we have our team.
Marchand - Bergeron - Eriksson
Beleskey - Krejci - Pastrnak
Hayes - Spooner - Connolly
Kelly - Kemppainen - Shithead
Randell (maybe Talbot)
Chara - Trotman
Krug - C. Miller
Irwin - McQuaid
Morrow - K. Miller
Rask
Gustavsson
IR- Seidenberg
Drop the puck.

Are those the pairs you envision? I feel like Morrow is ahead of both Irwin and C. Miller, and the idea of Krug and C. Miller together scares me on the defensive end.
