Nobody I heard defended IKE. It was more in the nature of, you go looking for trouble, you'll find it.

I apologize. I spend way too much time on twitter these days. There's been the predictably poor commentary there. Didn't mean to conflate it with your post.

I don't think you understand the dynamics of a locker room. Regardless of how beloved one of the parties is, and no matter how unfair the argument, people are going to diffuse the situation, not further escalate it. Hell, most bar fights are broken up before anything serious happens, and those are drunk strangers, not a brotherhood with multi million dollar careers to worry about.

Also, that GG quote was posted right above yours, so technically, you could have copied the idea without access. Not saying you did...just pointing out the coincidence.

CC has plenty of company on NFLN right now. Willie McGinest and Nate Burleson are making this point emphatically, if more articulately.

Willie's take......

"It has nothing to do with who's soft or who's not. If you're a respected player in that locker room and other players respect you at a certain level -- Geno's not a superstar, he's not an elite quarterback, he's not even good at this point. [...] I would have called him (Enemkpali) upstairs to give him a contract extension. I want guys like that on my team to go to war with."

Fascinating & highly entertaining interview with Bart "Can't Wait" Scott on the Boomer & Carton show. Lots of delicious nuggets, including:
  • There are ATMs right in or near the locker room, and the debt could have been paid in minutes. Suspects Geno said "I'll pay you whenever" and that dissed Enemkpali
  • If you owed money, a QB would have paid that back a long time ago and never would have let it go that far
  • Dying to know who was in the locker room, but even if things escalated fast, players around a respected QB would have diffused the situation way before
  • Calvin Pace, a highly respected vet, had taken Enemkpali under his wings -- that says volumes about the 2nd year player
And best of all:
  • Sanchez was the goofiest kid ever, young and immature. Even Sanchez would have diffused this situation that Geno could not
Ouch.

That whole list reads like "football macho bullshit" language dressing up a lot of victim-blaming. If reports are correct, Enemkpali reacted like three y.o.who had his favorite toy taken away. Punching someone out to end a dispute like that is bullshit, plain and simple.

Ryan admitted he did not speak to Enemkpali before they put in the waiver claim, but a member of the staff contacted a current Jets player who was in the locker room to get an account of what happened.

The root of the fight was $600 that Smith owed Enemkpali after backing out of Enemkpali’s charity football camp last month to attend the funeral of a friend. According to the version some members of the Bills heard, Smith was mouthing off about the debt in the locker room, and Enemkpali told Smith to come over and say it to his face. Smith did, and put his finger in Enemkpali’s face, at which point Enemkpali slugged him.

Two sources who have spoken to Jets players who were in the locker room corroborated stories that Smith instigated the altercation with Enemkpali.
The players said Smith and Enemkapli were having words over the $600 debt Smith owed the linebacker, but they were on separate sides of the locker room. One source described Smith as “taunting” Enemkpali over it. Enemkpali challenged Smith to say it to his face. Smith did and pointed his finger in Enemkpali’s face, which then led to Enemkpali punching Smith and breaking his jaw.

I think there is a pretty decent chance that Geno never starts another game in his NFL career. Jets will go with Fitzpatrick to start the season. He'll predictably suck and then fans will start clamoring for the shiny new toy Petty who'll get his shot. Geno will then be traded to Cleveland this offseason for a 2024 7th round pick and will wash out of the league in 1-2 years.

Yeah, you may be right. They'll need to keep Grossman or Thigpen to backup Fitzy because all reports indicate that Perry is very not-ready. And if they keep 3 QB - and have to IR-return Milliner - they may just IR or even waiver-injured Smith at the end of training camp. Bowles certainly hasn't sounded impressed and it might be time to just cut bait and move on.

If they have to choose between IR-DTR'ing Milliner or Smith they will choose Smith and it might take 1 nanosecond to decide that.  Milliner is 4th or 5th on the depth chart.

So tired of hearing about "victim blaming" when it comes to this-Geno Smith was a 2d round pick who signed for several million dollars, IK was a 6th round pick playing for a little over $500,000, yet HE was the one trying to do a good thing by organizing a charity event and paying for Geno to come to it (and how freaking lame is Geno that he couldn't even agree to go to a charity event without telling the player making a whole bunch less "pay for my ticket and I'll come"?)   So IK pays for Geno's ticket because he wants his charity even to be good and Geno is probably the "star" attraction, and then Geno doesn't even freaking show up!! Can you imagine how let down  and embarrassed IK feels?  And then to top it off Geno doesn't even reimburse him the money IK wasted on the ticket for him, it's kind of no wonder IK flipped out when Geno put the finger in his face-Geno comes off a right douchebag all the way around and I'm sure IK didn't mean to break his face but a punch to it was probably deserved.

I assume that there is a general level of class warfare in every locker room.

Level 1) superstars who make a lot of money (but who may have proven their worth on the field).
Level 2) top level draft picks who make a lot of money (but who may not have actually contributed anything to the team's success)
Level 3) top talent players who do not make a lot of money (but who have contributed to the team and who may be inline for a future payday).
Level 4) average talent players who do not make a lot of money (relatively speaking) and who may only last a couple of years in the league.

Level 2 players and Level 3 players may become Level 1 players.
Level 4 players may become Level 3 players and may even become Level 1 players.
Level 4 players will never become Level 2 players.

Regardless of the team, I expect that there is always going to be a degree of resentment between the Level 4 players and the Level 2 players.

For the Jets and Geno, this resentment is probably compounded by a number of additional factors:

1) the Jets have not been a very good football team
2) the lack of success for the Jets is so easily compared against the success of the Patriots
3) the media attention that someone like Geno gets as the 'face' of a New York sport teams
4) the organization's willingness to 'go all in' in their support of questionable talent (Mark Sanchez, cough cough)
5) the fact that Geno is, presumably, an entitled dick bag

Why the hell would the Patriots' success have anything to do with whether Geno's teammates may want to punch him in the head?

I assume that being in the same division as such a successful team magnifies their own lack of success.  The same could be said of the Lions and the Packers.  You first measure yourself within your division.

First off, some are saying that Geno made up the funeral excuse.  He apparently told some people he had to visit his brother after a motorcycle accident then told another story about visiting a friend in the hospital in Atlanta.  Secondly, IK plays linebacker in the NFL.  It's the most physical job in American sports and like it or not, a violent reputation is going to help you make the team when you're a 6th round draft pick.  If some shitbag QB gets in your face in front of teammates, points his finger at you (possibly touching you), and says, "I'm not going to pay you and there is nothing you are going to do about it", you better do something.  Willie McGinest along with a bunch of other ex NFLers have said that you can't be dressed down like that in the locker room (McGinest said they should have given IK a contract extension).  Should Enemkpali have punched him?  No, probably not.  But this isn't teaching your son to turn the other cheek because of teasing after a little league game.  This is two grown men who play a ferocious sport and one of them was basically daring the other to take a swing.  It doesn't make it right, but it wasn't a sucker punch like Bowles first claimed.  Do you think Bruschi, McGinest, or Rodney, would let Scott Zolak do that to them without some kind of physical response?  Shit, there is a famous story of Willie dropping a rookie teammate for cutting the line in the cafeteria *

All I'm saying is let's put things in proper perspective.

* Does anybody remember the specifics to this story?  I've heard Bruschi tell it a couple times but can't find it online. Supposedly a huge rookie (offensive lineman maybe?) cut line and Willie dropped him with one punch.  The rookie's face swelled up badly but the guy was too embarrassed to tell coaches and other teammates what happened.  Instead he told them he had an allergic reaction to a bee sting.

Geno had a perfectly good reason not to attend. However, that's a separate issue from him not paying back the $600 he allegedly owed, and agreed to pay back.

IK made a terrible mistake and he owned up to it. It does not make his actions right, but barring turning the clock back, there's nothing more he can do.

Now, if Geno indeed ignored IK's previous request to pay back the money, led to a multiple verbal confrontation, and "got up" on IK's face, even putting a finger on his teammate (as various second-hand reports suggest), then it's also hard to believe that Geno is blameless and is merely a victim here.

P.S. I'm taking this as "source" (yes, with quotes as they're all second-hand/anonymous accounts): http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/08/13/jets-source-says-broken-jawed-geno-smith-deserved-it/

One team's success has absolutely fuck-all to do with a fight in another team's locker room. There was a fight at Cowboys practice the other day, but you don't see the resident Eagles fans chiming in with their opinion that it happened because the Eagles have been more successful in the recent past.

If this fight had occurred after a loss to the Patriots and the thing that ignited it was Smith blaming his teammates, you might have a point. But you don't. Not even a little.

I concur with Jerry Jones's best friend. Not everything has to relate back to the Patriots being the awesomes.

Also, the Cowboys won their division last year.

I'm going to let this point drop after this, but I wasn't trying to be a homer or anything.  I was making what I still think is a valid point which is that being in a division with such a successful team magnifies the spotlight on the other teams in that division and that this in turn can compound the resentment that average players on those teams may feel towards players on their team who are getting paid a lot of money without contributing much on the field.

Going back to the 2006 season, division winners break down as follows (and I don't post this to gloat but rather to show that Jets players could very well have some bottled up frustration).

Patriots 8
Colts 6
Packers 5
Seahawks 5
Chargers 4
Broncos 4
Steelers 4
Ravens 3
Cowboys 3
Eagles 3
Panthers 3
Saints 3
Bengals 2
Vikings 2
Texans 2
Falcons 2
49ers 2
Giants 2
Bears 2
Cardinals 2
Dolphins 1
Redskins 1
Chiefs 1
Titans 1

I will say that this is a little bit of a 'chicken or the egg' scenario - is the locker room chemistry bad because the team is not successful, or is the team not successful because the locker room chemistry is bad?

I still say that has zero to do with it.  Two guys had a financial arrangement and one guy was being a dick about it.  The other guy got sick of it and decked him.  What jersey they wear or what division they're in was totally irrelevant.

You got the story right. Waiting in line for water or food, a rookie cut the line so McGinnest dropped him without saying a word first. Said the rookie knew the rules.

Sports were different back then.

This didn't really have anything to do with a toxic locker room, either. You know what this was about? A loud mouth and a hot head arguing about $600. There's no magic pixie dust needed to elevate that into one of those two knuckleheads getting punched in the face.

Seriously. Stop waving your pom poms before Berry puts you in the wall of shame.
