The Cajuns' last three gasps:

-- Trahan goes down swinging. Girouard up.

-- Girouard lines to center. Caleb Adams up.

-- Adams grounds out 6-3.

Hotty Toddy in Omaha for the first time in 42 years. Wow.

They're through 4 innings of the CWS opener, and Texas leads UC-Irvine 1-0. The Horns got their run in the b-2nd after Collin Shaw led off with a double, Madison Carter bunted him over, and Zane Gurwitz squeezed him home with a bunt single. The Anteaters have left a runner in scoring position in each of their first four innings at bat -- twice at 2nd, twice at 3rd -- while the Horns have stranded 8 runners total.

Andrew Morales on the hill for UC-I (4 IP, 1 ER, 6 H, 2 BB, 4 K, 77 pitches), with Nate Thornhill throwing the bb's for U-T (4 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 2 K, 56 pitches).

It's on ESPN2. Live box here.

EDIT - Into the b-6th now. Thornhill's at just 81 pitches through 6 IP. Morales begins the 6th at 97 pitches.

Since allowing a leadoff single in the 5th, Thornhill's retired 8 straight batters while recording 9 outs, with 89 pitches through 7 innings.

Meanwhile the Horns are up in the b-7th with southpaw Evan Manarino on in relief of Morales (6 IP, 1 ER, 6 H, 3 BB, 5 K, 106 pitches).

Irvine ties it up 1-1 in the t-8th. Adam Alcantara leads off with a single, Justin Castro bunts him over, and Taylor Sparks crushes a first-pitch breaking ball to the left-center gab for an RBI triple. That'll do it for Thornhill after 94 pitches over 7.1 innings, as he gets a nice ovation. Closer John Curtiss now on the bump for Texas.

EDIT - Chris Rabago with another first pitch swing, this one on a fastball, and it's a line drive single up the middle -- just past the glove of Curtiss. Irvine takes a 2-1 lead, and the Anteaters dugout mobs Sparks with the jump & chant often seen after Fenway walk-off HRs.

EDIT - Connor Spencer rips at a 2nd-pitch fastball and singles to left. Irvine with 1st & 2nd, 1 out.

EDIT - Curtiss with a superb 76-mph breaking ball that floats back over the corner, and Jerry McClanahan goes down looking.

EDIT - Jonathan Munoz with an opposite-field single to medium LF on an 0-2 pitch left up. They send Rabago and frankly a decent throw would have had him, but it's cut off and he scores. The Horns do get the out at 3rd, retiring Spencer to end the inning, but it's a 3-1 lead for the Eaters heading to the b-8th.

A 1-2-3 inning for UCI's Evan Brock as Kacey Clemens grounds out, Gurwitz lines to LF, and Brooks Marlow grounds out.

Grant Palmer singles to lead off the Anteater 9th with Curtiss still in for the Horns.

Brock ends it with authority in the b-9th as Ben Johnson, Mark Payton & Tres Barrera -- the 2-3-4 hitters for Texas -- all go down swinging.

UC-Irvine wins it, 3-1. They'll meet the winner of tonight's Louisville-Vanderbilt matchup on Monday evening.

The Horns have been hooked, and they'll get the loser in a Monday afternoon elimination game.

Vandy LF Bryan Reynolds made a web gem catch to end the Louisville t-2nd and strand a man at first. Grant Kay absolutely hammered one to the gap, and Reynolds caught it mid-sprint with full arm extension just feet from the wall.

No score with the Commodores up in the b-2nd. Two on with 2 out after John Norwood walks and Ro Coleman singles to RF. Righthander Carson Fulmer on the hill for Vandy, and RHP Kyle Funkhouser with the ball for the Cardinals.

EDIT - Funkhouser walks Karl Ellison, his 3rd free pass of the day, and the bases are loaded.

EDIT - After a mound meeting, his first pitch to leadoff hitter Dansby Swanson is in the dirt and to the left, bouncing away from the plate. Norwood sprints home uncontested, and Vandy leads 1-0.

EDIT - Swanson clobbers an inside fastball to the left-center gap, plating two more. It's 3-0, with all runs scoring with 2 out.

EDIT - Funkhouser already at 51 pitches as he somehow whiffs Reynolds to end the inning. Velocity down, and either missing the zone badly or tossing meatballs.

More trouble for Funkhouser in the b-3rd, with his 4th & 5th walks of the night. Two on, one out. Meanwhile Carson Fulmer's throwing 95-96 and spotting every pitch where he wants it, and the gapper by Kay has been the only hard-hit ball off him (3 IP, 2 H, 3 K, just 44 pitches). Louisville cannot afford to fall any further behind.

EDIT - A double-steal puts both runners in scoring position, but Funkhouser strikes out Norwood looking to end the inning on a well-spotted 94-mph fastball at the knees. He's at 77 pitches.

The Cards getting to work in the t-4th. Nick Solak leads off with a walk, Jeff Gardner smokes one deep down the RF line but the wind holds it up for a fly-out, and Alex Chittenden with his second single of the night. Two on, one down.

EDIT - A strikeout-throwout DP ends the threat. Corey Ray swung at a low offspeed pitch for strike three, the ball getting away momentarily from Vandy catcher Karl Ellison. But while Ray was sprinting to 1st, Solak took off for 3rd -- and he was a dead duck as Ellison fired a bullet. Running into outs down three runs will not win you ball games, kids.

Still more 2-out trouble for Funkhouser in the b-4th as Swanson singles & steals second before Reynolds triples him home. He gets a line-out to 2nd to end the inning on his 97th pitch of the night.

4-0, Vandy.

Cards finally get on the board in the t-5th as Kay leads off with a single, and Sutton Whiting laces a liner that fades away from Rhett Wiseman as he sprints toward the line and evades his diving grab. It rolls all the way into the corner for an RBI triple.

EDIT - Fulmer strikes out Zach Lucas, but Kyle Gibson's 6-3 grounder scores Whiting to make it 4-2 Vandy. Sox draftee Cole Sturgeon up with 2 down & the bases empty. He's grounded out twice to second tonight.

EDIT - Sturgeon hits a looper to first, and Zander Wiel (playing deep) has to charge in for it. He tosses to Fulmer, who can't beat the speedy center fielder to the bag. It's in infield single, and the tying run comes to the plate in Solak.

EDIT - Yikes, what a slider. Totally eats up Solak on a 2-2 pitch for a foolish-looking whiff. On to the b-5th. Fulmer now at 86 pitches (2 ER, 6 H, 1 BB, 6 K).

Gardner draws an HBP to lead off the Louisville t-6th. Fulmer has thrown first-pitch strikes to his last 11 hitters.

EDIT - The bunt isn't on, but Chittendon hits a swing-away nubber right in front of the plate. Gardner got a late break because he apparently didn't realize there was contact, and it's an easy throw to 2nd for Ellison to cut down the lead runner.

EDIT - Corey Ray with a great PA as he takes the 11th pitch for a walk. Fulmer now up to 105 pitches, and Grant Kay (who's hit the ball solidly tonight) is coming up.

EDIT - And that'll be the night for Carson, as RHP Hayden Stone comes on.

EDIT - Kay hits one hard, but it's to straightaway center in the face of inbound 30-mph winds and ends up a routine out. No advancement by the runners, 2 down.

EDIT - Whiting flies to CF, and Louisville strands a pair. On to the b-6th.

A walk to Ellison but nothing more for Vandy. And yes, Funkhouser is still in as he finishes the b-6th at 125 pitches.

EDIT - Louisville again with the lead runner on as Stone walks Zach Lucas to start the t-7th. After a Kyle Gibson flyout, Cole Sturgeon hits a slow grounder to 1st as he tops a breaking ball, and Lucas gets to 2nd.

EDIT - Solak with a 2-out line drive base hit past Swanson's lunge at 2B. Lucas running hard all the way, and the throw home is a few feet right of where it needed to be. Ellison's sweep tag is juuuuust late, and the slide was perfect. It's a 4-3 ball game.

EDIT - Another pitching change for Vandy as lefty Jared Miller relieves Stone to face LHH Jeff Gardner with the tying run now at 2nd. Still 2 out.

EDIT - Five pitches so far, five sliders from Miller. And on a full count, the 6th hits him in the back. Two on for Chittenden, and Tim Corbin's going to his closer, Adam Ravenelle.

EDIT - Well, that was fast. A first-pitch fly out to RF, and the Cardinals strand 2 more for a total of 9 so far.

Lefty Kyle McGrath takes the hill for Louisvlile to start the b-7th.

EDIT - A leadoff walk to Vince Conde followed by a Zander Wiel single that gets him to 3rd, and Conde scores on a passed ball by Gibson. Vandy takes a 5-3 lead.

EDIT - Xavier Turner flies out, Rhett Wiseman walks (the 8th of the night for Cardinal pitchers), and John Norwood lines out to center. On to the t-8th.

Corey Ray whiffs, Grant Kay & Sutton Whiting both line out to LF. Louisville down in order, and it's on to the b-8th as they're down to their final three offensive outs.

EDIT - After a 1-out walk to Ellison, that'll be all for McGrath. On comes Cards closer Nick Burdi.

EDIT - Burdi can hit 3 digits, but he throws a 97-mph heater to Dansby Swanson followed by 4 sliders for the whiff. Two down.

EDIT - Another whiff by Reynolds, and the Cards will get their last ups.

Lucas flies out, then Gibson reached on an infield hit to short. Tying run will come to the plate.

EDIT - Wow. Ravenelle makes Cole Sturgeon look silly with consecutive sliders that turn in and drop at his ankles. Two down, and it's up to Nick Solak.

EDIT - A fly to CF ends it. Vanderbilt will meet UC-Irvine on Monday night at 8 pm, and we could see a great matchup of Elliott Surrey vs Tyler Beede. Louisville drops to the loser's bracket to play Texas at 3 pm Monday.

That's it for Day One.

They're through the t-5th in the Big 12 battle between Texas Tech and 7-seed TCU, with the Horned Frogs up 1-0. Their run came in the b-1st on a Cody Jones double, a Derek Odell bunt, and a sac fly from Boomer White. That ended a 27-inning scoreless streak for Red Raider pitching.

Both SPs are still in, with TTU southpaw Chris Sadberry (4 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 0 BB, 2 K) vs TCU righty Preston Morrison (5 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 2 BB, and already a career-high 9 K). Morrison's slider has been devastating today.

They're through 7 now, still a 1-0 TCU lead. Both starters continue to be outstanding. Morrison's thrown 102 pitches (0 ER, 4 H, 2 BB, 10 K) while Sadberry's thrown 97 (1 ER, 3 H, 2 BB, 5 K).

A one-out single in the t-8th by TTU's Stephen Smith ends Morrison's outing after 108 pitches. He gives way to hard-throwing RH Riley Ferrell, as Zach Davis pinch-runs for Smith.

EDIT - Anthony Lyons, pinch-hitting for 2B Bryant Burleson, rips a double that sends Davis to 3rd.

EDIT - Holy crap, Tyler Neslony just went digging for a low slider down by his ankles on an 0-2 pitch, and he crushed it to deep RF. Dylan Fitzgerald had to run a long way back just to have a chance, and it misses his glove right at the wall -- then he loses sight of the ball as it lands behind his feet. Not exactly a great route there. Two runs score, and Neslony gets to 3rd with a triple. Red Raiders lead, 2-1. Wow, this game turned around in a hurry. Still just 1 out as they try to plate the insurance run.

EDIT - The run scored by Lyons is charged to Riley Ferrell -- the first he's surrendered since May 10.

EDIT - Eric Gutierrez hits one back to Ferrell, who throws home and they nab Neslony in a run-down.

EDIT - Adam Kirsch whiffs to end it. On to the b-8th.

Jonny Drozd on in relief for TTU. Keaton Jones leads off with an infield single to new 2B, Alec Humphreys. Kyle Bacak bunts him over, and then Humphreys makes a tremendous play on a hard grounder up the middle from Cody Jones. Amazing he even stopped it.

But then he makes one of the worst decisions of his life by trying to get Jones at 1st. He had no shot whatsoever. The ball is overthrown, and Keaton Jones comes around to score as Cody takes 2nd.

EDIT - After a Derek Odell fly-out, Boomer White rips a single to left to drive in Cody Jones, his 2nd RBI of the afternoon, and the Frogs reclaim the lead 3-2.

EDIT - A flyout by Kevin Cron ends the inning. Tech will need a run to tie in the t-9th. Amazing that neither starting pitcher will factor in the decision.

Riley Ferrell sits Ryan Long down with a knee-buckling 87-mph slider that broke back across the plate. Once down.

EDIT - Tim Proudfoot reaches on an infield single deep to the short hole. Keaton Jones knocked it down, but can't get a throw off. Tying run on for the Red Raiders.

EDIT - Devon Conley is unable to get a bunt down. He pops it up and Ferrell grabs it along the 1st base line. Two out.

EDIT - Uh oh. A hard grounder to 3B by Reid Redman takes a bad hop on Odell and it's into left field. Ruled an E-5. Now 2 on & 2 out.

EDIT - LHH Todd Ritchie pinch-hitting, and grounds out short to first. Ball game.

TCU wins it, 3-2, and they'll face the winner of tonight's Virginia-Ole Miss game on Tuesday night. Texas Tech gets the loser on Tuesday afternoon.

Southpaw Nathan Kirby has a 1-hitter going for Virginia through 7 innings. Errol Robinson (leadoff single in the t-3rd) and Preston Overbey (1-out walk in the t-6th) have been the only baserunners. The Cavs' offense has put 11 men on the basepaths (6 H, 4 BB, 1 HBP) but only one has crossed the plate.

In the b-5th Nate Irving & Brandon Cogswell led off with singles off Ole Miss righthander Chris Ellis, but Daniel Pinero lined into a 4-3 double play. After an intentional walk to lefty slugger Mike Papi, Joe McCarthy singled to center to plate Irving. And that's been it for the run column.

UVA had a huge chance in the b-7th, knocking Ellis from the game after a leadoff walk (6 IP, 1 ER, 6 H, 4 BB, 3 K, 1 HBP) and putting runners at 1st & 3rd against reliever Jeremy Massie. But a spectacular over-the-shoulder basket catch by Rebels CF Auston Bousfield on a Derek Fisher deep fly ended the threat. Shades of Willie Mays on that one.

Virginia leads 1-0 heading to the 8th.

EDIT - Bousfield making the grab:

EDIT - Holt Perdzock with a grounder to 3rd, and Pinero's only play is to first. Dishon scores, and it's a 1-1 game.

EDIT - J.B. Woodman with another 6-3 groundout, and we head to the b-8th.

Sure enough, you never, ever, EVER pitch to a Papi with the game on the line. A walk-off gapper to right center ends it. Man, that was crushed.

Press conference right now on ESPNU.

"[Greenwood]'s" been our guy. And we'd already used Massie. Walking [Papi], we'd still have to face McCarthy, then you've got Fisher after that. Aaron was close, but Papi did a good job staying under that ball."

First off, the kid threw a changeup on a full count. A horrible pitch call.

Secondly, Papi is a FAR more dangerous hitter than either McCarthy or Fisher. He made a Buckner vs Stapleton / Pedro vs Bullpen decision there.

Pride goeth before the fall. That was a really idiotic move.

After Kirby was pulled, I lost track of the fact that Ole Miss ended the game with just one hit in the books.

@UVABaseball
The #UVa 1-hitter was 1st at @NCAACWS since 1983 and only 4th since start of aluminum bats in 1974.

@CB360updates 20m
... You read that right, it had been 31 years since any 1-hitter at the #CWS (solo or combined) ... happened twice in 7-day span at '83 CWS

Texas & Louisville are through 6 innings of their elimination match with the Longhorns up 3-0. The Cardinals have been sloppy as hell in the field, with 3 errors contributing to UT runs.

The Horns scored in the t-3rd on a Ben Johnson sac fly plating Zane Gurwitz; in the t-4th on singles by C.J. Hinojosa & Collin Shaw plus an error by LVL shortstop Sutton Whiting; and in the t-5th after a Mark Payton walk and two errors on consecutive plays by Cards 2B Zach Lucas.

Louisville just stranded Nick Solak at 2B after a walk & SB in the b-6th.

Junior righty Parker French has a 3-hitter working for Texas (6 IP, 2 BB, 3 K, 79 pitches), while Anthony Kidston's pitched decently for Louisville despite getting poor defensive support (6 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 6 H, 1 BB, 4 K).

The loser goes home. The winner gets the loser of tonight's UC-Irvine vs Vanderbilt game.
