Just an insanely bad goal given up by Spurs. Every defender + Lloris with a notable screw up. 2-0 Wolves.

I like to see a goalkeeper try 2-3 shoulder feints / match, Alisson was just getting through his quota

It’s truly mystifying seeing Conte run a midfield two every week which then gets inevitably overwhelmed.

He won the EPL with that 3-4-3, but Kante is just about at the top of the list of players who Harry Winks is not.

Union have looked good so far, but already down 0-2 after a brace from Reus. The second looked like it might have gotten VARed, but no such luck.

Union supporters are well-known for their passionate and often political signs (usually talking more sporting politics generally, but sometimes intersecting with broader human rights issues)—as does today’s sign which questions the new DFL head, Donata Hopfen’s apparent trial balloon for playoff and/or Supercup (think Community Shield) games to be played in Saudi Arabia.

Not exactly a popular idea, as one might expect. Her last name (which means “hops”, as in an important ingredient in a favorite local beverage), today asks who shit in her beer?

Spurs insanely wasteful with the ball and also always offsides. A very bad way to start my Sunday.

Also, Union has a lineup card with a bunch of names I've never seen as reserves - apparently bit of a Covid outbreak. Wish I had known that before betting on a win or draw for them.

Not one for the season highlight reel, but Liverpool take home the 3 points. That’ll do.

Union gave up another goal, and then scored themselves just about when I was about to turn off the tv in disgust. Still 17 minutes or regulation, and they honestly haven't played poorly.

Edit: chalked off for a (definite) foul that (definitely) could not have interfered with the play. The would-be goal scorer just got a yellow for some choice words.

Liverpool look like they are coasting, knowing they can't win it all. I wonder if there is conscious pivot to putting more into the cup pursuits.

I can see what you’re saying, but this looked like any of a number of their matches against regulation threatened sides. This was a familiar tune.

What was concerning today was the front three looking completely isolated. They couldn’t link with each other at all. It wasn’t always effective defending, it was poor communication and mishit passes. Some of that was from the AFCON layoff, some of it was the weather. it’s fixable.

Full credit to Burnley. They went after it and probably would have taken all three points with remotely capable finishing.

Zero points for officiating. The delayed flag is going to get somebody murdered needlessly. There’s no rhyme or reason to it, either, as later in the game the flag was going up immediately in similar situations. There were at least five situations where a delayed flag led to player collision or contact. That’s crap.

Getting points at Turf Moor is always a good result. Liverpool rarely play well there. I think the conditions - particularly the wind was playing havoc with the passing. This was one of those games where Henderson looks like toast. There have been too many of those this year. They kind of had to extend him … doesn’t mean they have to play him. I think Elliot or Diaz would have been in if they were still chasing a goal.

Very sloppy game all around, basically saved by Alison.

I struggle to understand how that wasn’t a handball. That part of his arm isn’t part of his shoulder, especially when away from the body. This sleeve distinction thing is not working.

Why let Wood go, especially to a relegation-fight rival?

6'3" banger, gets 10+ goals every season on one of the poorest attacking sides in recent memory. Even if I were in charge of City, Pool, or Chelsea I'd have him in a second. Wouldn't start every game for those sides but if I needed a change of pace forward to batter some CBs or get onto the end of some corners he's great. Has been in the bottom half of the table most of his career (still can't believe that Burnley got Europa one season) so he knows how to grind out these results. I don't get it.

Trippier fractured his foot, out indefinitely.
This is devastating for Newcastle. Newcastle dismantled Everton last week, just pounded them into submission physically and mentally. The assault was led by ASM and Trippier. From what I heard he was already becoming the leader of the dressing room.

Wasn't the thing with Wood that he had a release clause in his contract that Burnley didn't know about, or something?

Most fans tend to under-appreciate free kick prowess, but Trip is so much more consistent and dangerous than Shelvy. In a relegation scrap, that’s so valuable.

Some updates reports online ball park it as a 4-6 week absence. We’ll see. Foot injuries are the worst - they have to bear your full body weight and it’s harder to stay in shape while rehabbing.

Trippier really bossed that game. It was like, "get on my back fellas, let's take it to these and make them wish they'd never set foot on the pitch."

ASM too. Think Traore but with 2x the aggression and better end product, or Marshawn Lynch in his prime. If he ever stays healthy, JFC.

Park was going bonkers, fans were howling at the moon. Everton wilted. No composure, no fightback, no chance.

Fortunately we turned the tables and did the same thing to Leeds on Saturday at Goodison. I'll muse on that in the Everton thread later.

I think Burnley knew about the release clause, they just didn't think anybody would pay that much.

Weghorst hasn't scored yet for Burnley but he was excellent against United, rinsing Harry Maguire to set up the equalizer and hitting a truly top level strike from outside the box that was denied by an even more amazing save from De Gea. He is a good player. Not a starter for a top club, but the same type of physical box striker with some skills. Like Wood he may be showing signs of age, but the guy had 25 goals and 9 assists across all competitions for Wolfsburg last year.

Wood has played 360 minutes for Newcastle without scoring or assisting and now has 3 goals in 21 matches on the season. There's a good argument that Burnley upgraded or at least stayed level at that position and made about 13m in the process. Their problem is that they probably needed to get significantly better to stay up and its not clear that occurred.
