Judy Battista, NFL.com: If the Bears got only a conditional sixth-round pick for Fields, who played reasonably well last season, what can the Jets hope to get in a trade for Zach Wilson, whom they want to trade with even fewer backup jobs available?
https://www.nfl.com/news/justin-fields-trade-fallout-winners-losers-from-blockbuster-qb-deal-between-bears-and-steelers
The Zach Wilson "trade talk" stuff is likely just similar to Lazard stuff we saw leaked out this week by the PR team. In that it's the turn-the-page story they are selling within that. Nobody taking an in-depth look at the possibility, including the Jets, probably believes a trade there is actually going to happen.

I been assuming Zach will probably just end up being Metlife's new Kenny Galloway.

He said this after a week 2 loss to Tampa:

Poorly word, but he wasn’t wrong. Getsy drew up 4 designed runs across the first 2 games this season. He was giving Fields game plans that didn’t fit his talent. A pro tells the truth.
A pro doesn't blame the coaches for his struggles. I like Fields and no real issue with him having some frustration, but can't say he didn't unprofessionally call out his coaches when...he did.

Of course Fields was likely right that the best use of him was to have more dependence on him running. But Getsy was in a bad situation. His role as OC was to develop the rookie QB. I think it's perfectly justifiable -- and likely in Fields interest -- to refuse to use him as a running QB and try to develop him as a passer. The Bears weren't winning, anyway, so rightly the idea was to see if Fields would be the guy moving forward. To be the guy, he needs to have been more than a runner. Turns out he wasn't, but can't fault Getsy for trying to expand Fields game.

Chase Young to Saints on 1yr fully guaranteed contract. No details on amount yet. Chase would have been an intriguing addition in NE. Can never have too many pass rushers but perhaps he only wanted a 1 yr deal to rebuild value and NE probably couldn't give him as much playing time.

Looks like he’s intent on following the Jadeveon Clowney career path. Really thought he’d be better but the effort just isn’t there consistently.

Just saw on ESPN.

Mike Williams to the Jets. 1 year for 15 million is what was announced. That is not a great signing. You'll get 4 awesome games, 5 bad ones, and then out for the rest of the season injured.

$15M is the maximum that will be tied to incentives so this feels like a good signing to me for a team with an old QB and a legit #1 WR already in place. Jets have had a nice offseason, I think.

He only played 16 games (13 & 3) over the last 2 years but before that was pretty consistent between 15-16 games. Great signing IMO and would have loved him on the Pats at that price

It's a good signing and it syncs with Rodgers' contract. After this year they can purge the roster. I wouldn't have a ton of faith in his health or production but for the Jets and where they are at, it's worth it. Lot of people here would have been psyched with that contract for the Pats.

@luckiestman are you feeling that scary feeling as a Jets fan? Things working out a little too well?

Really hard to judge these deals right after a major injury without a return to play in between. It's a 1 year deal so worst case for the Jets I guess he just never makes it fully back and he's gone after a year.

We hear "ACL tear" reported, but there is often a lot more to it. Sometimes the ACL tear is simple, the torn ACL is the only significant issue, you fix it, and (for awhile at least) you are good to go.

Other times, an ACL tear is part of a complex injury with other ligament tears (sometimes reported) or meniscus/cartilage damage (often not reported). Those injuries are often going to progress pretty quickly to arthritis even if the ACL repair is done well. Who knows what happened with Williams, guess we will find out on the field soon enough....

I do find it a little amusing that the Jets are going to load up on guys with injury concerns and/or returning from major injuries, then make them play 8 games at Met-Life

I understand why the Jets are doing this as it is only 1 year but I agree with both of you here. I think we see a Met-Life injury for Williams at some point this season.

That’s not a high price tag. Definitely wish we had the cap room for a stud CB like that.

Do we know for sure that he wouldn't sign long-term? They should back up the brinks for him, put him across from Gonzalez for the next five years and be glad they did.

I'm willing to be patient but watching other teams make these kinds of moves is frustrating. Tennessee doesn't have a QB or much of a roster either and they're not standing pat.

And I was told on this board there's no way Sneed goes for a 3rd! Maybe the price for Higgins and Aiyuk is similarly deflated.

I’ll make a bet that Tennessee doesn’t make the playoffs and if they finish with a better record than the patriots, it won’t be by more than two games.

Trying to rush the rebuild got us into this mess. I don’t think doing it again is a great strategy.

Sneed is a good CB, but he just got the same contract as Jaylon Johnson who is much better, and they had to give up a 3rd for the priviledge of overpaying him.
Given the Patriots just spent a 1st on Gonzo, have a good history of developing DBs, and a lot of other holes, not sure that's a great use of resources probably. I think they are only going to be willing to make that kind of move for someone they think is a #1 X WR, a good starting LT or maybe a very good Edge.

Sure, a lot comes down to Levis. He could sink them. But for a team in QB purgatory, they've made several moves to improve the roster to give themselves a chance. They can also pursue the next vet QB that may become available if it comes to that and credibly compete for the playoffs.

We weren't complaining about a rushed rebuild in 2021. Mac crushed us. But if we made the rumored Baker deal we're probably still a playoff contending team with BB and a chance to at least bother the top teams.

I guess my general point is that there's never a bad time to bring in young talent liked Sneed at a reasonable cost and work that into your rebuild.

Smart trade for TN as they are also in a division where 9-10 wins gets you into playoff consideration. I would not have wanted to see NE invest yet even more in the DEF as they are currently bringing a knife to a gun fight offensively in the AFC East. Defense alone won't get you far in today's NFL.

I'm all for a slow, steady and wise rebuild, but spending a future 3rd rounder on a young, quality CB seems like a no-brainer to me. Crazy that they couldn't top that. Crazy that ANYONE couldn't.

Not even a 3rd rounder this year, but a 2025 3rd. Isn’t the rule of thumb to dock a round on picks a year out in regards to value? Feel like I’ve heard that quite a bit recently.

Not to beat a dead horse, but the guy that was really, really good at finding and developing incredibly cheap DB’s doesn’t work for the Pats anymore. Give up the 2025 3rd and spend some cap on a great corner.

It's not the pick, it's then making him one of the highest paid CBs in the league that held teams up.

That's very reasonable money for a high value position. It's Mike Onwenu APY. No brainer to pair him with Gonzalez for the foreseeable future at that price, and it's not like the Titans are contenders in a much better spot than the Patriots.

At some point they are going to have to extend themselves to pay someone to upgrade the talent level on this team. Whether that's Sneed or a #1 WR type, they're going to have to bite the bullet.
Is CB really the position to target that spending on? I’d argue no given the presence of Gonzalez on a rookie deal.

I'm not saying they have to target CB, but it is one of the premium positions. My overarching thought is that they are going to have to overpay for someone that elevates the talent level of the team at some point here. I think it should be at the WR position with Higgins or Aiyuk.

Sneed wasn't a FA, but it was the same thing. He wasn't going to go anywhere he didn't want to because he wasn't going to sign a long-term deal. 30 other NFL teams would get better with Sneed on their team, but no one else could pony this up? There's a reason.

While this will only further the whining every time someone moves for anything less than a kings ransom, I assume they passed once they knew what Sneed wanted for a contract. And it’s the right move.

This team is primarily building through the draft. They will extend themselves for players where the positional need is huge, the value/cost ratio is high or the veteran leadership is highly valued. I’m not sure it’s much more complicated than that.

This is clearly not the case.

Not arguing whether it is or isn’t the right approach but coming into the off-season they had a bottom 5 OL and bottom 5 WR group and they went dumpster diving for other teams unwanted bench players on one year deals.

I think Gonzo on a rookie deal is exactly why you could spend on Sneed. This team needs impact guys across the field and there simply aren’t any impact WR/OT guys that are currently available. Maybe that changes at some point with Aiyuk/Higgins. I’m not upset about this or anything but I agree with red that they need to seriously upgrade the talent at some point. Right now, they’re putting a ton of pressure on the 2024-2025 drafts.

Depends on the guarantee. Jaylon Johnson got the same overall deal (4yrs/$76m) and a guarantee that put him in the top 5 at the potion ($43m). But the guarantee is structured in a team friendly way - $28m this season, $7.5, $7.5, then $0. Johnson is also 2 years younger than Sneed.

My guess is that Sneed has a much more typical guarantee structure that will see him be prohibitively expensive to cut through his age 30 season, maybe even 31. And how much of that $76 is guaranteed?

The team is not competing this year. It makes no sense to tie up $30mm on a cornerback and lose a top 100 pick when the Pats window is more situated with when Snead will be cut or far too expensive relative to his production.

This crosses into draft thread/s, but I wonder if you have any thoughts on Penix. My amateur opinion is that he'll be a steal in the 2nd round for someone, but one of the negative checks is that he's a (re)-injury waiting to happen. Per your "for awhile at least" aside in this post, is it reasonable to assume that someone like Penix will have a high propensity to re-tear his ACL due to the 2018 and 2020 repairs? Or 4/6 years later can one be confident in his knee? FYI, here's what Penix is claiming:

Penix told ESPN that ElAttrache will be available to talk to any teams that have questions, but said that he got a "thumbs up" from ElAttrache and "there's nothing to hold me back." That aligns with how Penix's knee felt in the three seasons since the second ACL tear, as that specific injury hasn't caused him to miss a practice, workout or game in those seasons.

Re-injuries are always possible, though that wouldn’t be my main concern.

The post ACL tear knees are often never the same, mainly due to associated meniscus tears and developing arthritis. It’s even worse for those with multiple ACL tears.

Maybe Pennix is lucky and he escaped without any other damage, but he would be in the minority for an ACL tear x2. I’m sure El Attrache is giving the graft/overall knee stability a thumbs up more than anything else.

They must have a decent idea how things currently look (and obviously he can move around OK now), but how his knee will progress over the next 5+ years is still a lot of guesswork.

KC dealt him in large part because they don’t want to allocate that kinda cap to a corner who is very good, but not a rare air talent, when they’ve got a very good number one corner already (McDuffie). It’s a sensible approach regardless of how close you are to contention. Tennessee had a much bigger need for a corner - they haven’t had one of Sneed’s caliber in years.

Sometimes I wonder how the Patriots will ever enter a window of contention if they are only allowed to acquire good players once they are in said window.
Yeah, I really don’t understand this mentality. The Pats signed Judon 3 years ago, a month before they drafted a rookie QB. They were never winning anything during that 2021 season but it still made sense to sign Judon as a building block type player.

Sneed is 27. He has several more good years left, if he stays healthy. There’s a reason why they were poking around here. They ultimately decided to keep the cap space available for positions of greater need, which is certainly defensible.

Speaking of Sneed, lots of reports he had a lingering knee injury and persistent swelling that kept him out of practice much of the year.

KC maybe can’t pay him anyway, but my hunch is they were more interested in going year-to-year on a guy like that. They know his knee better than anyone.

Ah, didn’t know that. Definitely don’t want to commit big money on a guy with that profile then.
