They need to make a decision on an extension soon, and is adding another big contract what they really need right now?
I don't see them suddenly starting to be prudent about spending. They need his power.
The Mets should clearly trade Scherzer and / or Verlander if they can. Maybe staple Marte to one of those guys, too?
Alonso is a guy whose reputation will make him cost more than he’s actually worth. Whichever team signs him is going to regret it
Any selling the Mets do will be done with an eye on being a championship contender NEXT SEASON. They are not doing a teardown and build up to be competitive in three or four years. If they sell Robertson, it's because they know they'll have Diaz back next season and can go and get another setup man. If they sell Scherzer and/or Verlander, they'll just go and sign another top of the rotation guy next season. Steve Cohen knows how impatient his fanbase is, because he's been part of it for a long while.
Scherzer and verlander wont really fetch much in a trade. The Mets probably think they’re better off just running it back and hoping for better results, and they might not be wrong

Maybe, but those guys will be 40 and 39 next year. Have really not been great or healthy next year, doubt next year will be any better. But probably right that their only hope is riding on those two.
