Who SoSH immediately will hateThey are going to try to get at least 2 guys.
I jokingly posted "what a reach" about 10 picks ahead of ours last night in the game thread. Just wanted to make sure that I was the first.Who SoSH immediately will hate
We’re such an edumacated fan baseI've seen some non-Volin doozies today:
"BB can't judge MODERN talent"
"BB should be fired for this pick"
My favorite so far:
"I'm thinking of selling my season ticket after that pick". This from a 25 year season ticket holder.
Oh boy.
We could make a SoSH Bingo for these things.I jokingly posted "what a reach" about 10 picks ahead of ours last night in the game thread. Just wanted to make sure that I was the first.
Those are great. We should add something about how it doesn't matter how good Mac is if he has nobody to throw to.We could make a SoSH Bingo for these things.
"I hate the pick."
"BB can't draft anymore!"
"I'm starting to come around on the pick."
"Now that I see all the pics and how it worked I get it."
To wit, I remembered this from a few years ago and just found it -- Football Outsiders' compilation of all major sites immediate post-Draft grades after the infamous 2019 draft. You know whose draft was the consensus best in the NFL?Given how overhyped the NFL Draft is, it is not surprising that fans go insane when teams pick someone other than the most talked about prospect remaining at any given time. It's hard in the moment for people to remember that the draft is almost entirely a crapshoot and that entire classes of picks that look bad on draft night turn out to be awesome (and vice versa) every year.
https://www.footballoutsiders.com/nfl-draft/2019/2019-draft-report-card-reportWith five picks made in the first three rounds, every analyst seemed to love the Patriots selection of the big-bodied playmaking wide receiver N'Keal Harry out of Arizona State. Prisco, who gave the Patriots the ever-elusive A+, loved the selection of Vanderbilt cornerback Joejuan Williams in the second round. Almost every analyst identified Michigan edge rusher Chase Winovich as the prototypical player that Bill Belichick seems to manufacture in a lab every year on Draft Night. New England's offensive line addition Yodny Cajuste seemed to be a universally praised selection, while Hjalte Froholdt was met with mixed reviews. The only selection that seems to be frowned upon is the trade-up for Stanford punter Jake Bailey in the fifth round.
That's an amazing review...almost exactly wrong on every pick.To wit, I remembered this from a few years ago and just found it -- Football Outsiders' compilation of all major sites immediate post-Draft grades after the infamous 2019 draft. You know whose draft was the consensus best in the NFL?
You guessed it: the Fightin' N'Keals.

OK, so we can expect a guard and a tight end tonight. Got it.Let's add some more ass-kickers to the team today!
Position by position who I like for them. I bolded guys I like more than others - the 4+/5 fits.
OT: Bernhard Raimann (likely gone), Abe Lucas, Spencer Burford (late 3 but probably a day 3 guy), maybe Braxton Jones (late 3 but probably a day 3 guy). If they take NPF out of Ohio State or Rasheed Walker out of PSU that's fine - I don't love them but they are at least average fits for them at OT.
IOL: Let's skip this. They don't need to draft another OG highly and taking a backup OC is bad value day 2. Just take Lindstrom or Dawson Deaton or Andres Blaise or whoever round 6-7.
TE: They could take James Mitchell I guess at the end of route three or Jelani Woods if they wanted to add to this group. If they do end up taking a TE in rounds 2-3 there are some average fits for the Pats but no one I am excited about. I would be disappointed if they went TE.
RB: They can wait until day 3 to take someone. No one I would imagine they need to take early. The pass catching backs are all projected to be day 3 picks. Maybe Dameon Pierce late day 3 if they want to trade or have a plan in place for another early down potential starter but that's about it.
WR: Here is where the fun starts. X: Pickens, Pierce, Watson, Skyy Moore (he is might be a better slot but I think he's versatile), and maybe Tolbert. Slots: they don't take slots early but I like Metchie for them. I don't love the value of Metchie at 54. I also like David Bell as a late 3 option. It might be a reach for Kyle Philips but I could see them taking him with a late 3. Probably not - he is also a guy for tomorrow most likely. My guess is they take one of those X's if they take a WR at all.
QB: Pass. I hate this class. Get someone day 3 if you want to replace Stidham.
IDL: Travis Jones, Phid Mathis, maybe Winfrey later. Mathis is a very good run defender but I don't think much of him as a pass rusher so I don't love the value. Travis Jones is a home run but no way they get him I don't think.
Edge: Arnold Ebiketie, David Ojabo (injured and not my fav.), Logan Hall, Josh Paschal, Cameron Thomas, DeAngelo Malone. There are even more guys who I think are at least average fits. Edge is loaded this year.
ILB: Leo Chenal. Please. He would be such a wreaker on their team. If they want to go for a lighter faster style next to Bentley they have options: Nakobe Dean, Chad Muma, Brian Asamoah, Channing Tindall, Troy Andersen, Christian Harris. If they want a bigger guy then it's Chenal (2nd) or Darrian Beavers (late 3). Damone Clark is a fit and a 2nd round kind of talent but he had that recent spinal fusion surgery so I have NO IDEA where he goes. Probably day 3?
S: Bryan Cook, Verone McKinley, Nick Cross, Tycen Anderson, JT Woods. I think most of these guys are late 3s but safeties can slide so wouldn't shock me if most are available day 3. They could use a FS and/or slot safety but it's not mission critical for 2022.
CB: Andrew Booth, Kyler Gordon (can cover slots), Roger McCreary, Jalyn Armour-Davis (could go anywhere or even day 3), Josh Williams, Zyon McCollum, Tariq Woolen (could be a FS), Alontae Taylor (could be a FS), Josh Jobe (could be a FS). I don't have a good read on where these guys go on day 2 minus I think Booth, Woolen, and Gordon go earlier than the rest.
Terrific work as always. Would love to see the Pats trade up into the late 30's-early 40's to get one of Dean/Chenal/Booth/Gordon. I may be in the vast minority in this fanbase, but I really don't think they need to draft a receiver early. It'd be nice to grab one or two in the mid-late rounds because some contracts will run out after this year and they could use developmental guys, but I like the group they've put together, even if it lacks high end talent.Let's add some more ass-kickers to the team today!

I would like to draft "that punter" even if he probably out kicks his coverage every time and is a net negative. Those are great. We should add something about how it doesn't matter how good Mac is if he has nobody to throw to.
My friends in a text chat are asking about available wide receivers and if we are going to draft "that punter".

There is a prospect nicknamed "Punt God". I don't want to tempt fate. You thought a 5th round punter was bad? Just wait until the round 3 version. Edit: @Silverdude2167 beat me to it.OK, so we can expect a guard and a tight end tonight. Got it.
Yep. Many of the best WRs were drafted in round 2 or later. (Probably can say this about any position, but it seems to be especially true of receivers.)Well, there were 6 WRs picked in the first round. I am betting that a couple of guys will be picked today that will be better than most of these first-rounders. Happens every draft.
Isn't it? The more you read it the more impressive it is, right up to of course the ONLY universally panned pick being the most successful of the bunch (right?) in Jake Bailey. That's an amazing review...almost exactly wrong on every pick.
It's like trying to LOSE at picking against the spread is just as hard as trying to WIN picking against the spread. It's remarkable that they got every one of those dead wrong.Isn't it? Exactly. You would think a blind squirrel would have found a least a couple of nuts just by accident, but nope. It's like trying to LOSE at picking against the spread is just as hard as trying to WIN picking against the spread. It's remarkable that they got every one of those dead wrong.

Damien Harris was in that draft. The punter was the best pick
Good reminderDamien Harris was in that draft.
The fact that they don't mention him just adds to the hilarity of their write up.Good reminder
Just going by who was listed in the story
Jacobs always seems to be hurt, and $8 million is a lot for a back. I used to love Mayock's enthusiasm and draft analysis. Some of this was clearly Gruden. The Raiders did make a bunch of good picks in later rounds, was that Mayock?Ferrell and Abram make sense, they were bad picks, but Jacobs is a head scratcher to me.
One thing that always drives me nuts about draft coverage is the day after "Team X had a great draft!" talk when Team X had multiple first round picks. This year the Jets are the prime example. Now maybe they picked three future All Pros, or maybe they picked like the Raiders in 2019 - we'll know in 3-5 years. Just because they got three picks doesn't mean it was a good draft. Does it matter to the results of the 2022 draft that they alienated Pro Bowler Jamal Adams to the extent that they had to trade him? I would think yes, but the draft gurus on ESPN and elsewhere never take the cost of acquiring the multiple picks into account. What's the cost of the picks that the Jets gave up to get the third 1st rounder? Doesn't matter in the eyes of the gurus.Raiders decline options on all three first-round picks from 2019 draft, saving over $25 million in guarantees (msn.com)
Just to give you an idea about what can happen even with 3 picks in the 1st round, they are willing to walk away from all three. Mayock was a draft guru.
Agreed. But media people HAVE to talk about it. And it wouldn't do them any good to just shrug after a draft and say, "We won't know whether this is a good draft until 3-5 years from now. Ok, let's talk about the Celtics." They have to talk about it, and invariably, talking about it means sharing opinions on whether you think pick A, B, or C was a good or bad pick and why. They have columns to write and air time to fill. One thing that always drives me nuts about draft coverage is the day after "Team X had a great draft!" talk when Team X had multiple first round picks. What ultimately matters is weather the Jets made three good picks and we won't know that for years.
True, but somebody could at least say, "well, it's great that the Jets drafted Garret Wilson, but I'd rather have Jamal Adams."Agreed. But media people HAVE to talk about it. The Jamal Adams trade was an absolute home run for the Jets.True, but somebody could at least say, "well, it's great that the Jets drafted Garret Wilson, but I'd rather have Jamal Adams."
If they walked out tonight with either, I'd be thrilled. If they ended up somehow with both....holy crap...orgasmic.Gimme Travis Jones and Chenal and all is forgiven.
As many others have said in various ways above, what matters to the gurus is the extent to which a team goes for guys or shies away from guys they have on their hype-driven draft charts, and the extent to which their "expert" commentary sustains clicks and eyeballs.
