I have been passively following this thread, but have to chime in on this. Holy shit, I cannot stop laughing.
The deification of Hinkie is so weird to me. I guess completely tanking takes balls - although with ownership approval, maybe not - but how is this some brilliant tactic? If I'm out of the race in my dynasty fantasy leagues, I also tank for a better draft pick. He tanked, he signed Robert Covington to a decent contract, and he traded assets for a few potential first round draft picks. If a team wants to follow the same process, they could probably do it with just an assistant GM in place for a few years. On a different tangent: Why hasn't anyone hired Hinkie yet?
The tanking itself is not especially clever; every 12 year old playing NBA2K does it. And Hinkie learned why it's not especially clever: it undermines league integrity, and eventually ownership and league will not tolerate it.The deification of Hinkie is so weird to me. bowiac nails it right here.On a different tangent: Why hasn't anyone hired Hinkie yet?
I would not consider hiring him if I were running a team, since interpersonal skills and integrity are important parts of being an NBA GM, but I do think he did a pretty impressive job but for The Process.
He's not DrewDawg?
Not sure how much credit I give Hinkie for Kings pick - although admittedly, Hinkie did see the value of cap space before most GMs (and maybe before anyone). The tanking itself is not especially clever; every 12 year old playing NBA2K does it. Hinkie does deserve a lot of credit for Covington, and acquiring the Lakers and Kings' unprotected first round picks. We basically deify Ainge around these parts for the Brooklyn trade (rightly so); Hinkie accomplished almost as much without the benefit of Pierce and Garnett on his roster. Calling Robert Covington's contract (4 years @ $1M/year) decent is also selling that well short I think.

The awesome thing would be if BC continues to stonewall and then the investigation goes on into the FA period and the 76ers can't sign anyone (cough LBJ cough). How awesome would this be if the Sixers investigation identifies Hinkie as the mole?
Please basketball gods, if you are out there you must make this happen!
And the PW reset phone number matching on a number of them.If Colangelo did not do this, then this is the most brilliant troll job in the history of trolling. The most incriminating piece of this is when the author let the Sixers know about a couple of the accounts that the others were made private.
Is this true? Cap space has always been valuable, and the decision predates Hinkie. Not sure how much credit I give Hinkie for Kings pick - although admittedly, Hinkie did see the value of cap space before most GMs (and maybe before anyone).
Curious why you think this? But for his owners and the league getting cold feet, he'd probably have beaten us this year.
Instead, he is Dan Duquette. At least with personal relations.I think Aristotle said it best:
Anyone can tank; that is easy. But to tank with the right personnel and to the right degree and at the right time and for the right draft picks, and manage the PR of it - that is not within everybody's power and is not easy.
Hinkie did two things that sound banal but are in fact extraordinary:
1) He committed wholly and without reservation to the tanking. Other GMs do it to salvage what they can out of a season, gain marginal benefit, and the improvement ends up keeping them (at best) in mid-table purgatory. Nobody has tanked as boldly, completely and lengthily as Hinkie.
2) He sold present value (including cap space) for high-upside future value in very canny fashion and without any pretense of fielding a respectable near-term squad. As bowiac said, he made a mini version of the Billy King trade without having any objects as shiny as Pierce and Garnett to deal. Many of Ainge's best moves have been in the same style. Hinkie never would have done the Fultz/Tatum trade, even if he still took Fultz #3. Nobody has truly invested in "5 years from now" to the extent Hinkie has, and it is already paying off. But for his owners and the league getting cold feet, he'd probably have beaten us this year, and stand a good chance of doing so in the years to come, Hayward and Kyrie or not.
Wrap a slightly more charismatic veneer on his personal style, and we're probably talking about him the way we talk about Theo Epstein.
1) I just think a better GM would have had better pieces in place around Embiid and Simmons, particularly exploiting the rebound advantage against our current roster that was there for the taking (but couldn't be created by just Embiid alone). Redick and Amir Johnson weren't the best ways to spend that money.Curious why you think this?
That is literally the only way this story could get any better. If Hinkie is involved I may have suffer a laugh hernia. How awesome would this be if the Sixers investigation identifies Hinkie as the mole?
Please basketball gods, if you are out there you must make this happen!
1) they were place keepers for this offseason. They weren't planning for contention this year1) I just think a better GM would have had better pieces in place around Embiid and Simmons, particularly exploiting the rebound advantage against our current roster that was there for the taking (but couldn't be created by just Embiid alone). Redick and Amir Johnson weren't the best ways to spend that money.
2) If 2016-17 was another year of The Process, he'd have come away with a lot more than Dario Saric to show for it, especially if he had truly shifted from accumulating assets to cashing them in. The Nerlens Noel situation. The Tiago Splitter trade. Paying Covington a year before he had to but getting not much discount for it. The Booker trade. BC's work has just struck me as very unprofessional throughout, particularly because I'm spoiled for general management talent among the teams I follow.
It's a hunch more than a certainty, I'll grant.
Pissed that he sent the Yankees Gleyber Torres for a rental closer, you mean?we're probably talking about him the way we talk about Theo Epstein.
Heh. Fair point, but I imagine even Hinkie would say that cashing in some chips for championship equity is what they're there for. Game 7 notwithstanding, I bet Epstein makes that deal again.Pissed that he sent the Yankees Gleyber Torres for a rental closer, you mean?
The fact that this is a legitimate possibility... the mind reelsHow awesome would this be if the Sixers investigation identifies Hinkie as the mole?!
I'm not a Hinkie guy, but with regards to the bolded, wasn't this by design? I thought he tacitly acknowledged that the draft was a total crapshoot and so the only way to ensure long-term success was to acquire as many picks, and preferably as many high picks, as possible, hoping that one or two would eventually hit.I hate the deification of Hinke. He stashed assets but his drafting record outside of Embiid is terrible. I have no confidence, if allowed to continually tank, he would have brought the team to where it is now. He had one good draft. What makes people think he was some sort of savant? He tanked and kept acquiring future value, but showed no impressive propensity to actually cashing in on it.
His picks in first round:
2013: Noel, Michael Carter-Williams (Giannis, Burke, Adams, Olynyk, Muhammad available)
2014: Joel Embiid, Dario Šarić
2015: Jahlil Okafor (Porzingis, Mudiay, Booker, rozier, Turner, Winslow available)
He also had no idea how to play the PR game or talk to other people as actual human beings. He's the most overrated executive in the minds of fans because of a catch phrase that was mocked.
Lololol, OK, now I'm officially on board with the pillorying. Where are the rotten tomatoes?
If they can't figure out how leaked the Hinkie letter, why does anyone think that they'll figure out the ownership of these burner accounts?I’m told the Sixers still have no idea who leaked the Hinkie letter.
Great, now you've got me doubting that it was Roger Goodell's wife.Watch it turn out to be BC's wife or something.
I don't think he is. I believe that post was meant to say "can't stand Trump, but..." There are a few other posts where he mentions Trump negatively. I think he's more of an anti-Trump Repub with independently held racist beliefs.Lololol, OK, now I'm officially on board with the pillorying. Where are the rotten tomatoes?
(V&N alert, but I'm shocked, shocked I say, that someone this sleazy would be a Trump apologist...)
Right--he's a troll too.Yeah, took me a while to make sense of it, but I got the "can't stand Trump" part. But I still cringe at any sentence that begins "I can't stand Trump, but..."
This is absolutely the best possible ending. And then, like in "Any Given Sunday" Hinkie has a press conference to announce he's taking over, say, the Kings and he's signing FA Joel Embiid. How awesome would this be if the Sixers investigation identifies Hinkie as the mole?
Please basketball gods, if you are out there you must make this happen!
Eric Jr?I’m told the Sixers still have no idea who leaked the Hinkie letter.

At least long enough to allow Ainge to fleece him one more time.As a Celtic fan I hope he keeps his job.
Maybe we'll take those twitter accounts off his hands if he tosses us a pick?At least long enough to allow Ainge to fleece him one more time.
While this would be a fantastic result, there is a mountain of eveidence that the accounts are BC’s. They don’t need him to cop to anything. He has to be fired quickly. He has lost the trust of every player, coach, trading partner, agent, and fan in the country. The awesome thing would be if BC continues to stonewall and then the investigation goes on into the FA period and the 76ers can't sign anyone (cough LBJ cough).
But do you actually know what you're talking about? Everyone says he is easy to engage and talk to about anything. Whenever he did do PR etc he was great.I hate the deification of Hinke.
