Because he goes cheap'ish for the same reason, and you end up liking him more overall then any of those FA alternatives?
Bour has had one year above 119 wRC+, and that was last year when he had an inflated BABIP, faded after the summer, and hit five home runs in the second half. He is not young.

He's not a bad player and I get that he was in the Home Run Derby. But I don't know why we'd trade prospects for him.

While true, it doesn't fall within chawson's established narrative.

I can see more than a few cash-conscious teams getting in on Bour
I would love Bour. He has a good track record unlike the cheaper guys and that would give them all sorts of flexibility to re-sign some of their guys or acquire someone else during the season. That's way more sensible than relying on a long term risk to someone in their thirties.

Plus he wasn't impotent against lefties like he had been before.

Bour's "fade" consisted of him putting up a 2nd half slash line of .290/.363/.486. With more then double the home runs that Belt hit in the second half too if you want to play it like that btw. Same age as well.

I'm personally not looking at Bour one way or the other atm, but on the surface he certainly checks off a lot of boxes here.

Considering Brandon Belt didn't play a game after August 5, that doesn't seem hard.

Are we also considering that Bour only played in a 14 more second half games then Belt did? Didn't seem like it before, which was basically the reason behind pointing that out.

On that note though, Bour definitely looks kind of scary beyond the offense there from a games played over the last 3 years standpoint.

I wouldn't assume that Bour is on the block just because Ozuna was. Bour's only first-year arb; MLBTR has him projected at $3.5M. That's not a salary a rebuilding team would feel much urgency about clearing, as opposed to Ozuna's projected $10.9M.

Got an alert from mlbtraderumors.com that Yelich is up next. I think everyone is available in Miami.

I'd love Yelich. Problem is I doubt Boston would have the pieces. Maybe they would...who knows what exactly is going on in Miami.

I guess Nunez is on the table after all - though could just be a monitoring type thing.

http://rotoworld.com/sports/mlb/baseball?ls=roto:mlb:gnav&rw=1

Eduardo Nunez
is drawing free agent interest from the Red Sox, Blue Jays, and "possibly Yankees," per Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports.

Nunez excelled in a utility role with the Giants and Red Sox in 2017, slashing .313/.341/.460 with 12 home runs and 24 stolen bases in 114 games. He battled a knee injury down the stretch, but the versatile 30-year-old is expected to be 100 percent by the start of spring training in February.

I normally would immediately agree with that, but he is already 29yo and seemingly a notable injury risk. Plus they might end up with another 1B they want to play in one of their other deals.

But yeah, like I expect the White Sox to do on Abreu they could always wait out the current surrounding market too.

Why does Yelich have any appeal to the Sox? I'm not sure I'd expect him to be more productive than our current worst starting outfielder next year.
2 years younger than JBJ, better career ops+ of 120 to 93, similar power, more speed, better career obp .369 to .318, and waaay more consistent.

Yelich is a guy that would benefit leaving Miami. His home/away splits are fairly pronounced.

Home: .278/.363/.396

Away: .301/.374/.465

The Sox asked about Khris Davis but were denied. He was a guy that came up in another thread.
http://www.weei.com/blogs/rob-bradford/report-red-sox-asked-about-oakland-slugger-khris-davis

"According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the Sox asked the A's about the availability of slugger Khris Davis. According to the article, Oakland has no plans to move the 29-year-old outfielder."

For someone who talks about wanting to keep his outfield in tact, it's odd he would be talking about Davis, Though I guess he could have been a DH given his noodle arm.

This was in addition to going after JD Martinez. Hopefully, DD is planning on adding 2 impact bats.

We're not, actually:
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/12/details-on-ian-kinslers-no-trade-clause.html

He'd obviously be a great fit as a Pedroia stopgap, but what happens after Pedey gets back? Does he move to 1B? If so, who plays there in the meantime?
Kind of surprising, I’d figure the big market teams would be on there as a negotiating mechanism. To your question, I don’t see Pedroia returning to prevent it. Even if they acquire a 1B, Pedey probably shouldn’t be playing everyday and won’t be back until around the All Star break, if then. You could use Kinsler at 2B, 1B and DH. If you have an embarrassment of riches at the deadline, move him. Nunez is likely a better option, but Kinsler would fit nicely as well for short term if they don’t want to commit years and dollars to Nunez. If the above is correct and he really only does count $6M on the luxury cap, I think it’d be a nice pick up, even while admitting it’s not particularly likely.

Yelich is a lot like Eric Hosmer, except with much more defensive and baserunning value at a much tougher position.

2016-17
Hosmer: .292/.357/.465 (119 wRC+ in 1338 PA – 57.2 GB%)
Yelich: .290/.373/.460 (123 wRC+ in 1354 PA – 56.0 GB%)

For all the bluster about Hosmer, one thing that rings true is his productivity going oppo. He's the most productive left-handed hitter to the opposite field over 2016-17 with a 251 wRC+. Yelich is the second best at 233 (4th in MLB).

Yelich would be the perfect replacement for Bradley if they had to trade him. In addition to the offensive numbers you posted, he would be a great defensive player in left field provided that Benintendi moves to CF. In 3,535 career inning played in left field, he has saved 32 runs.

Jackie has had a very similar OPS+ two of the last three years, and is certainly young enough that he is likely to bounce back from a lousy 2017. I'd probably pick Yelich if all things were equal, but:

a) They're not, given the acquisition cost and salary, and;
b) Even if Yelich is an upgrade over JBJ next year, it's still probably not the splash that the Sox need in the lineup, and it doesn't address the 1B/DH issue

Sign Martinez to play DH/rotate in the OF and deal JBJ in a trade netting Yelich.

Why not just keep Bradley and use whatever players in your hypothetical Yelich deal to fill one of the team's actual needs? As others have said, he's not really a solution to the lack of power; he's pretty comparable to guys currently on the roster in that department.

EDIT: I guess I can sort of see a fit if paired with a JD signing, but it still seems like a weird allocation of resources.

I don't know how many of you were watching MLB Network last night, but Carlos Pena was very gung-ho on the Sox going after Hosmer for just this reason, citing his opposite field numbers and drawing comparisons to Boggs and Big Papi. I think that's stretching it, but it does make me wretch a bit less over the prospect of a Hosmer signing.

Edit: corrected typo - thanks, Unc.

No only was Pena going all-out in advocating the Sox signing Hosmer, he was doing so with Dombrowski sitting right there as a guest on the panel. DD said something akin to "you must have been in touch with our analytics department."

Pena later pointed out that he noticed DD smirking a bit when he said this - Carolos interpreted this as agreement with what he was saying, while another one of the hosts suggested that he was thinking "not at their asking price!"

You had me at hung-ho.

I think Hosmer solves some major club house issues. But we still need more.
Not picking on you but this is worth discussing.

What are the issues?

What would Hosmer do to solve them?

How would existing players react to Hosmer's attempts to solve the clubhouse?

Are we partially signing him to lead the team?

Which players who think they already lead the team would be ok with this?

for those looking to get Yelich, we couldn't match up for Ozuna, so good luck.

Well for the people who mentioned the farm isn’t that bad...yeah we haven’t heard that line for a few years. Now as a result we’re getting ready to give JD Martinez 200 + million.

What does giving JD Martinez 200 million have to do with the farm system? There's 8 position players that are homegrown so that's not the reason Martinez may be in a Sox uniform. They are in position to sign Martinez because they are a big market team who has a need for power.

An update on all things Manny Machado from Orioles beat reporter Brittany Ghiroli. Doesn't sound promising in terms of him being moved within the division.

#Orioles making “good progress” on Machado trade. More than 5 teams interested at Degrees.

Duq didn’t dismiss division rival trade. Said they talked to all interested to gauge market.

Duq when asked if it would be tough hypothetically to see Manny 19x in opposing colors. “We have control over that now. We won’t a year from now.”

Easy. If you have a strong farm system you don’t need to spend 200 million on JD. You can just trade for that replacement.

The farm system was strong. Players graduated to the majors and others were spent on Chris Sale, Kimbrel, etc.
If they had the prospects now to trade (instead of going after JD Martinez) wouldn't we be having the exact same discussion when the next need presented itself?

The Yankees have the strongest farm system in baseball and they just traded for a player who will cost $265 million. That's the cost of a big time power bat these days. The Red Sox used their trade chips to get one of the best starters(on the best contract in baseball IMO) and one of the best closers in the game.

Yeah but he’s different than JD. JD is a liability in the outfield. You’re signing a guy who is going to be a full time DH to a 200 million dollar deal. He’s also going to be 31 next year. Stanton is younger has more upside and better in the field. You also need to worry about what the JD contract is going to do for Betts. A very real case can be made that he’s a better player than JD. He’s going to want double.

The farm system with recent graduates of course takes a hit. Trades too. But they’ve had 2 pretty poor drafts thus far. That’s why they’re ranked in the bottom 3rd. You need to have a sustainable pipeline and they’ve failed over the last two years. Benny was a great pick he was also a Ben pick.

If this is legitimate this makes Boston look really bad. How do you not even really engage on Stanton when your number 1-3 needs are power? Have a rotating DH. How hard is that?
Bradley, Groome, and Some 17 year old nobody has heard of for Stanton seems like it would have been a possibility then. Damn. That seems like a huge missed opportunity.

Our first round pick last year has thrown 22 innings. Our 2nd rounder has 9 at bats. Our 3rd round pick is already in Greenville at age 21. Our 5th round pick hasn't thrown an inning yet.

How can you possibly reach that conclusion yet?
