Yeah, I can't blame McCarthy for that one - they probably need a successful onside at some point, so why not go for it early, see if they can get back to a two-score game and put a smidgen of pressure on the Falcons.
I disagree with the onside kick in the 3rd quarter in a 3 score game. If you don't recover it and the other team scores (hello) it's over.
There was 38 seconds left in the 3rd QTR. It was basically down 22 in the 4th QTR with your defense not coming close to stopping their offense.
Onside pooch kick over the first receiving line is a thing, Belichick tried it once. Except he decided that he should have Gostkowski lateral the ball to Ebner and have Ebner drop-kick it.

For what was supposed to be a shootout, the Falcons defense has done a great job today, they've really rounded into a complete team at the right time.

Yes, ball carriers do, but the rarely grab the face mask, twist and shove it off the defenders head.
