espn: Seahawks now 1-14 since 2012 when the opponent scores 25+ points (counts playoffs). Only the Bills (0-23) are worse over that span, measured by winning percentage. The Patriots (14-11) are the only team above .500 in those games. The league average win rate is .195.

Keep in mind that the previous NFL record for penalties in a game -- 22 -- only included accepted penalties. Declined and offsetting do not count. The Raiders, however, have deserved most of these calls. This is not a case of flag-happy officials. This has been an abominable lack of discipline.

Was there a league memo on flags? Goodell's idea to improve ratings?
If you exclude the Raiders (chalking that up to lack of discipline), has it been a flag-happy Sunday otherwise? Hasn't seemed out-of-whack to me, but my anecdotal, subjective sense based on watching RedZone = / = data.

My God is Denver fucking lucky.

Edit - Crossing pattern for an easy 12-15 tipped up in the air off the receiver's hands for a pick 6.

Knocked down pretty hard. He didn't even move when the Chargers receiver was pushed into the sidelines.

Me too. Stretcher is out and the cart. I thought I saw his hands move so that's good. Neck stabilized.

Something like that was bound to happen. Just missed strip sack a minute before, pocket collapsing left and right. Freak play to have the ball tip off the hands backwards like that. Stuff just happens in Denver. Their offense is so bad though.

Amazing they picked up the flag, and more amazing that the flag wasn't for a hold on the OL who mauled a Chargers lineman.

Before today, the Patriots were 9th best in penalties per game.

The Broncos were 24th

The Chargers have dropped at least 2 easy picks (one that would have gone for 6) and probably more like 3 or 4.

They are really good at what they do...blowing winnable games.

Yes, sure the Raiders rated about 14 or 15 penalties, they were all kinds of undisciplined.

But the illegal substitution(s), failure to report(s) and at least two of the holding penalties were either criminal bias or a product of Raider's interactions with the officials. Further, there was zero consistency on what hits to head on receivers (by either team) were legal or illegal, hands to face was apparently only called when Oakland had a large gain... I could go on. The Raiders laid an egg this game and got bailed out by our lord and savior Derek Carr, but please do not defend that officiating abomination.

"Whole 9 yards" is a military expression. Something to do with artillery.
"The whole 9 yards" is of widely disputed origin. The military origin's largely been discredited since it was attributed to WW2, then earlier uses of the phrase were found and it was re-attributed to WW1, and then a 1907 attestation was discovered. The only thing people agree on (mostly) is that it's related to the (earlier?) phrase "the whole 6 yards" and that it became popular in the US in the 1960s after being in uncommon circulation for about 60 years.

It also almost certainly does not come from the volume of a cement mixer, American football, or the size of a grave or piece of cloth (sometimes particularized to a bridal veil or other specific garment). There's little evidence for or against various nautical explanations.

The origin of the phrase was William Safire's pet project, but he never reached a satisfactory conclusion.
