We were actually talking about this last night after the ceremonial puck drop and came to the conclusion that while not as a player it was probably deserved as a builder. And this is the 60th anniversary? Get it done Theo!

Pete Blackburn apparently has bugs in my condo which is why he asked the same question today and came to the same conclusion.

    What say you?

Pretty clearly a yes. It's a shame the NHL hasn't done more for him the way MLB has done for Jackie.

Although, I don't think the NHL has had such a history of clear racism and segregation as MLB, there just aren't that many non-white hockey players due to a number of other factors (geography, cost of entry, etc). However, he clearly deserves to be honored.

Corollary: Should the Bruins retire his number?

Full disclosure - when we were talking about it last night I just kind of assumed it was, guess I had never really thought about it and processed it. Which is dumb of me. Because it's not like Shawn Thornton was all that long ago. I'll forgive myself for forgetting about Cehlarik.

It helps that Jackie Robinson was a tremendous player for a pennant winning team in New York City, while Willie O'Ree had a short NHL career for a team that finished bottom in his only semi-full season.

The NHL has its history of racism, it's just shrouded by Canada's lack of non-white people before the 70s. Larry Kwong certainly didn't get his chance, nor did Herb Carnegie. The Coloured Hockey League in Nova Scotia were innovators and toiled in relative obscurity until the league folded in 1930. It took until 1949 for a Native player to stick in the NHL (George Armstrong), were there Native players good enough to have careers before then? Probably.

Shit, the league wasn't even that friendly to white people who weren't Old Stock Protestants. The Winnipeg Falcons faced discrimination for being Icelandic and French-Canadian players have most certainly faced discrimination.

MLB's discrimination was more obvious, since people knew in the 19th century that 12% of the population could play ball as well as the other 88%, and society didn't fall to pieces when Jim Thorpe, Albert Bender, John Meyers, etc., all Natives, played in the majors.

O’Ree just did the ceremonial puck drop here at the San Diego Gulls AHL game tonight. His number was put up in the rafters when the Gulls returned to San Diego as part of west coast realignment a few years ago.

For 82 years old the guy looks and moves around great.

Update: went down in to the season ticket holder lounge at first intermission. O’Ree was down here. Got a picture and shook his hand. He’s got bear paws and a death grip for a hand shake.

    Awesome.

Ryan Whitney was saying on Spittin Chicklets that he heard O’Ree is coming off of surgery and looking forward to getting back on the ice.

    Puts Monbo’s brothers to shame.

If Jeremy Jacobs is in there for winning the salary cap fight, I don't see why O'Ree isn't in there.

Of course he does, but the NHL is run by idiots. I think eventually he will, but only with more public pressure. The NHL will need to be compelled to do it. Sad!

The NHL doesn't have anything to do with the HHOF.

Thankfully, it appears O'Ree has made it into the HoF as a builder
