Drew has to know that pressure is coming from the backside eventually. Shocked he held onto the ball.

It may not be pretty, but it's a ballgame at least.

Then what's stops the defense from tackling a receiver in his route on 3rd and 15, when they know they're beat? Almost all defensive penalties are automatic first downs, except offsides (because the play hasn't started), because teams would use it as an advantage to stop opponents from getting a first down when they needed to. The difference is when a defensive player makes a penalty like holding, that holding could have actually wiped out a touchdown or a massive play, so the penalty has to be more severe than the other way around.
Tackling a WR would be pass interference. Holding a WR 6 yards from the LOS should not be an automatic 1st on 3rd and 30.

Could use the college rule...auto 1st if it's a pass play beyond the LOS and the foul occur beyond the LOS, otherwise no auto 1st.

tackling him before the ball is out would be holding. which is what the LB did on that play.

i agree that holding a WR 6 yards off the LOS on 3rd and 30 should never, ever be a first down... which is why it should be a cuttable offense for any DB who does it. how often are DBs playing that close on 3rd and 30 anyway?

It's only pass interference if the ball is in the air. If a guy is in his route, and the quarterback hasn't released it, it's defensive holding. There's also illegal contact, illegal hands to the face, facemask, etc. All are automatic first downs.

I also think you guys are forgetting the offensive penalty isn't just 10 yards. It's 10 yards, plus whatever yards they gained on the play. It's extremely punitive too in some cases.

Yup. If a defensive player gets caught holding a receiver 6 yards from the LOS on 1st and 30, I have no problem with the offense getting a first down just based on stupidity.

But on 1st and 20, when the offense sets up a screen, and the defender tackles the running back trying to get into the route? Why shouldn't be a first down? How do we know that the running back doesn't take that thing to the house. If the defender realizes he's the only one left, and there are four blockers about to lead a convoy down the field, he should probably tackle the RB and give up the first down. If he was only going to give up 10 yards, the decision is even easier.

There is no doubt in my mind that if they ever changed these rules on defense and took away the automatic first downs, Belichick would figure the game out faster than anyone, and the Pats defensive penalties would go up, and their points against would go down.

Wow, Ted Ginn taking the shot and holding on. Impressive. Clean hit too. That's good football on both sides.

The Saints would be getting the ball back with like a minute left (assuming they stop Atlanta on 3 downs), if Ted Ginn doesn't take that shot and force them to lose a timeout.

That was a really bad decision and throw by Brees. Jones made a good play on the ball but that ball needs to go higher and further back in the end zone.

I’m pretty sure Brady would have never thrown that pass. I’d bet my life BB would never have picked up that penalty.
