Exactly. And I would argue it is in his DNA to be conservative. I love the small, under the radar acquisitions he's made, I'm just not sure he has the big market mentality to pull the trigger when necessary. It's impossible to know what Chaim turned down but I think it's perfectly reasonable to be disappointed that we (apparently) didn't land a true 1B upgrade (assuming Schwarber only moonlights there) and another arm. That critique doesn't mean people think Chaim is trash. This stuff isn't so black and white. Characterizing all criticisms as WEEI drivel is just as tiresome as those calls themselves.
On the whole, Chaim has done a great job and this team still has a great shot at a special season. But it's possible that Chaim could have been too conservative here. We'll obviously have to play it out.
And there's the minor pen arm. Changes the calculus a bit. Schwarber/Robles while surrendering not blue chippers is a nice outcome, I think.
The Sox are, collectively, 23-11 against the Yanks, Rays, and Jays this year. I don't think any of the additions they made change the head to head calculus all that dramatically. We're going to get a real time test of that over the next three weeks, starting tonight. What do the final AL East standings have to do with anything? Every team they’re competing with made major acquisitions. Even if they do not lose first place, the teams they are most likely meeting in the postseason all made major acquisitions. I am not even saying they had the pieces to get Scherzer or Berrios, and I certainly don't want them giving up pieces like the Cubs got for Kimbrel, but they clearly need help at 1B, clearly can use another SP and bullpen help is always nice. To come away with only Schwarber, to me, is a fail - and as I said, I love the Schwarber add.
I just think when your playoff competition (MFY, TOR, TB, not to mention teams in other divisions) all make significant moves there needs to be more than Schwarber.
Gawd, tell me this is a fake account…
-.7 WAR for 2021 .... don't get it.Robles? Ugh why? I can’t imagine Iglesias would have cost that much.
It's also quite likely that ownership had a say in this, as the Sox are still under the luxury tax. I think yesterday's rumors about the ownership being gung-ho on exceeding the tax to acquire Schwerzer were somewhat off the mark.Chaim could have been too conservative here
Bloom replaced Brandon Workman, quite literally.Robles? Ugh why? I can’t imagine Iglesias would have cost that much.
Hey, ESPN guys: How do you like us now, huh?
And what if the price on those adds was too high? Do you think Bloom just sat on his ass and didn’t make any calls? Schwarber is a great get and Sale + Houck should mitigate any issues with the rotation. I wanted a bullpen arm too but I trust that us not getting one is because we weren’t willing to meet the acquisition cost. What do the final AL East standings have to do with anything? My white whale. Nip and didn’t miss many of his starts. His offspeed pitches were amazing. His elbow…not so much.
Or they were gung-ho about Scherzer, but not so much anyone else. That's not unreasonable. It's also quite likely that ownership had a say in this, as the Sox are still under the luxury tax. The Angels played The Undertaker’s theme whenever Robles struck a batter out.Robles? Ugh why? I can’t imagine Iglesias would have cost that much.
All I wanted was a fair price for Schoop or someone similar. But I trust that Bloom appropriately weighed all the pros and cons and did what was best for the team. I hope so.People here seem to be forgetting that the Red Sox have Chris Sale returning in two weeks, Tanner Houck likely taking a spot in the rotation, and Garrett Whitlock able to be stretched out. They also got a .900 OPS bat to blend in with all of the other flexible defenders on this team.
Seeing the prices paid today, I’m pretty stoked that Chaim et al showed the organizational discipline to not trade away 3-5 top 20 prospects for rentals. It bodes well for the future I think.
Would people here really have wanted to trade Casas + Duran (or Downs) + some lower SP prospects for Bryant or Kimbrel or Rizzo etc. ? That is what it likely would have taken.
The bolded is just not tue. The dudes the SFG traded to get Bryant are #9 and #30 in their system according to MLB. We could have totally beaten that if we wanted.People here seem to be forgetting that the Red Sox have Chris Sale returning in two weeks, Tanner Houck likely taking a spot in the rotation, and Garrett Whitlock able to be stretched out. Like I said, we won't know - I think it is reasonable to say the price WAS too high for Berrios, Kimbrel, Scherzer/Turner, Gallo and probably Rizzo but I still think that there had to be something else (not Robles) out there. Schwarber deal I love. If he plays 1B, even better, but if he does not, then I do not know why we could not pry any of the 1B in the league who are better than Dalbec/Franchy/etc away. There had to be someone? And had to be a RP better than Robles available? And what if the price on those adds was too high? Do you think Bloom just sat on his ass and didn’t make any calls? Based on what?I'm just not sure he has the big market mentality to pull the trigger when necessary.
"Robles" is how you describe the Hamburglar's vocabulary
Obviously his feeble small market brain can’t handle the idea of a grown up trade deadline. Last week, someone showed him a 100 dollar bill and he passed out.Based on what?
Upgraded Workman's 84 ERA+ to Robles's 86 ERA+.Bloom replaced Brandon Workman, quite literally.
I could turn that around and ask you the same thing. Based on his unwillingness to sign Mookie, and his inability to pull the trigger today, that's what I base it on thus far. ANd I will add his past at TB where he was never in a position to go big.Based on what?
Raisel Iglesias please.FWIW, Speier and Abraham on NESN both *can't* confirm the Red Sox are done.
Stop using preseason prospect ratings to judge trades. The bolded is just not tue. The dudes the SFG traded to get Bryant are #9 and #30 in their system according to MLB. We could have totally beaten that if we wanted.
So really just a theory on your part, because you disagree with some of his decisions.I could turn that around and ask you the same thing. Based on his unwillingness to sign Mookie, and his inability to pull the trigger today, that's what I base it on thus far. ANd I will add his past at TB where he was never in a position to go big.

You think Chaim decided to trade Mookie?I could turn that around and ask you the same thing. Based on his unwillingness to sign Mookie, and his inability to pull the trigger today, that's what I base it on thus far. ANd I will add his past at TB where he was never in a position to go big.
Funny you should mention this. Only six more games against NYY, four against Toronto, and thirteen against TB. If the Sox can keep anything close to that going over those 23 games, the only contenders on the schedule besides those three, are three apiece against ChiSox and Seattle, and two against the Mets. The Sox are, collectively, 23-11 against the Yanks, Rays, and Jays this year. I don't think any of the additions they made change the head to head calculus all that dramatically. We're going to get a real time test of that over the next three weeks, starting tonight.
On what planet do you think Chaim made tat call?I could turn that around and ask you the same thing. Based on his unwillingness to sign Mookie, and his inability to pull the trigger today, that's what I base it on thus far. ANd I will add his past at TB where he was never in a position to go big.
I wonder if Dombrowski has a sock puppet here. You think Chaim decided to trade Mookie?
Career 577 OPS against RHB. Other than Tampa the playoff competition is very RHH heavy.Raisel Iglesias please.
This has been hashed and rehashed ad naseum, but "willingness to sign" is a two-way street.I could turn that around and ask you the same thing. Based on his unwillingness to sign Mookie, and his inability to pull the trigger today, that's what I base it on thus far. ANd I will add his past at TB where he was never in a position to go big.
He's got an ERA+ of 86.Bloom replaced Brandon Workman, quite literally.
We've already gotten that guy a few times over this year.Good numbers in 2019 for the angels. Low cost, decent candidate to turn it around. Not a needle mover, but a decent flyer.
WTF everything we talk about on here is a theory. I don't fucking know and neither do you. I mean, can you not see how one could come up with this theory? So really just a theory on your part, because you disagree with some of his decisions.
