@Lose Remerswaal suggested that when I redo my list, I turn it into a thread...so here it is.

The previous iteration from July 26th had only 205 prospects on it, of which I have removed these 7:

As such, this new list has 59 new prospects on it. A lot of them are organizational filler types, some are new signings, & a lot of them are guys who are out this season with injuries, so they weren't necessarily on my radar. If you see anyone missing, please let me know! The only Red Sox Minor Leaguers who shouldn't be there are ones with significant Major League experience like Dalbec & BEAR CLAW.

Also, if anyone has any strong feelings about why any of the rankings are wrong, would love to hear the arguments. Because they quite possibly are & they are a work in progress.

There are several more columns on the spreadsheet that I might post at some point, too, but without further ado here is my TOP 258 RED SOX PROSPECTS LIST...

CJ Weins is on the list twice at 129 & 145...

He should not be at 129, so I'm concerned I accidentally replaced the correct #129 with him & someone is missing. But that seems like a tomorrow problem.

(Also, happy birthday CJ Weins!)

Thanks @JM3, I can't imagine all the work you put into making this list.
Thx! It's mostly a background activity while doing other things, & it should be much easier to maintain now that I think I have everyone & I figured out I can check all the Red Sox organizational transactions easily in one place.

I keep foolishly adding more columns to the spreadsheet, though. & I'm scared I'm actually going to start writing scouting reports on all these people.

This is great work, thank you. I like your rankings a little more than SP's (no knock on them, they're freaking awesome). In particular the younger guys like Cespedes and Monegro, and I think that they undervalue Jordan a bit. I'm also a bit higher on Meidroth and C. Coffey than most, but I get some of the bearishness there on everyone's part.

Thanks for doing this. Thanks to all prospect-watchers. Fantastic info.

You're a treasure. And also clearly insane. But so are dozens of others that should be considered treasures.

My main issue with Meidroth is I'm not sure if he is ever going to hit for enough power or be a good enough defender. The bat-to-ball skills are obviously great (although the jump from Greenville seemed a bit hard for him - 21/20 bb/k at Greenville, 37/60 at Portland), & if he had at least 1 of those things as a sure thing I'd have him higher.

Cutter Coffey I may have an irrational issue with because every time I look at a box score I feel like he's making another error. He obviously didn't hit great at Salem either, but no one does. How he does the rest of the season at Greenville will be interesting & I could see him moving either direction.

& I agree on SoxProspects doing great work. Compiling the spreadsheet would have been almost impossible without them.

I was listening to their Podcast on my way to work today & realized there was a much easier way to find all the players, though...

https://soxprospects.com/org.htm

I did my list through the stats on Baseball Reference combined with the Red Sox transactions page. Will have to cross-reference to see if I missed anyone...

Great work, thanks.

The guy I'm wondering about is Wilyer Abreu. Currently at 268/380/521 in Worcester, has a plus arm so RF is in play, very good BB rate (15.4%) and his K rate isn't a disaster (21.4%). He's 24, which isn't young, but it's not old either. Only a year older than Casas. His L/R splits are fine (827/922 OPS). Why isn't he more highly regarded? Is he an option for next year? Seems to me he has a much clearer path to playing time than Emmanuel Valdez.

This is what I posted about Abreu on Sunday...

Not sure if I have actually besmirched Abreu or whether you're memeing. But my apologies to the Abreu family just in case.

It's hard to say how any non-elite prospect will transition to the pros. He has had fairly low averages throughout his Minor League career (.256 in 1755 PAs including .262 this season), but is patient & walks regularly (52 walks, 71 strikeouts).

He definitely can hit the ball hard, but it seems the problem is that he doesn't do it on a consistent enough basis. He has 18 home runs now... but only 9 doubles on the season, which is certainly unusual.

He would cost like $750k, so it would be like less than 10% of the cost... but I don't have a great feel for what % of the production you would get.
I think he's an option in a Verdugo-less world, otherwise he's probably pretty redundant. I guess I posted that after the 1st of 3 homers on Sunday as he now has 20 homers & 9 doubles (& 1 triple). I had him way further down because I haven't really seen him as an impact Major Leaguer. I may or may not have overreacted to his hot streak over the last couple weeks, but hoping he figured something out.

Part of the problem is that everyone's stats at Worcester are so good this year it's hard to tell how much is real.

Worcester OPS leaders:
C Note 1.035
Dalbec 1.012
Scott .999
Valdez .971
Abreu .901
Fitzgerald .894
Goodrum .888
Alfaro .887

Turns out I'm missing at least Joey Stock (who I think I sometimes confuse in my mind with Dylan Spacke & should have been on the list already), & Michael Gettys.

& I might have accidentally deleted someone for the 2nd CJ Weins, or I might not have. Only time will tell.

Interesting. FWIW, Abreu does have a 1.005 OPS at home and .791 on the road. As a team the gap is still there but more modest -- .866 at home, .813 on the road.

Btw, I don't suppose anyone knows anything about why Smil Guzman is on the Reserve List this season do they?

I couldn't find anything. I would have him higher than #198 if there wasn't something potentially afoot. That's the list Wander Franco is currently on (obviously not trying to compare the situations without knowing anything, & if it was something like that I would assume they would have just parted ways with him).

Much like the Sox have drafted pitchers who are strikethrowers that they might be able to unlock physically to add velocity, do you think that they have been targeting hitters with bat-to-ball skills in the hopes that they can add power with specialized training and maturity?

I work as an editor but do a shit-ton of workflow management so I feel you here. My first thought was "Hmm could we create some kind of catch-all metric that reorganizes your list automatically in real-time as stats update, and then have the ranking somehow autopopulate into the daily lineups as you post them???" And then I had to stop myself because these are the rabbit holes that cost me hours and hours chasing down The Perfect Workflow.

Anyways, I'm not sure a catch-all metric would work anyways because it would not adequately capture the vibes, which I feel is a big part of prospect sentiment when it's not possible to truly scout every player. Need that flexibility to be able to just say "look, Yordanny is a top 10 guy" when it feels right.

It's funny that you say that. Differences between your ranking and SP's aside, I was looking on their page a few days ago and smiling about our good fortune at the solid prospects from 11-20. A few of Bonaci, Cespedes, Meidroth, Hickey et. al would have been top 10 in the not-too-distant past. System is super deep now between depth guys who can legit backfill injuries but also some serious high-ceiling guys.

Much like the Sox have drafted pitchers who are strikethrowers that they might be able to unlock physically to add velocity, do you think that they have been targeting hitters with bat-to-ball skills in the hopes that they can add power with specialized training and maturity?
Yeah, it's definitely a prototype they've targeted, & are still targeting with guys like Riemer.

I'm not sure if they have a specific plan or just view them as high floor prospects, but it will be interesting to see how it plays out as they develop.

I don't have a single actual statistic on the spreadsheet, yet. It's mostly biographical stuff. But if I was going to automate the process there would definitely have to be a vibes multiplier.

For me there is no better encapsulation of the strength and depth of the system than the fact that a guy like Gilberto Jimenez, a top 10 guy two seasons ago and still a top 20 guy last year, can completely fall off the map and we aren't even remotely sweating it.

Yeah, it used to be not too long ago that the top 10 included meh quasi-prospects, & now we go 30+ deep in legitimately interesting guys.

He's still a top 105 guy...

I think what Franklin Arias is doing is super intriguing. Good bonus and producing in the DSL so I'd guess high ceiling even though I don't really know much about him. I'd probably put him in the 12-15 range. That's where "meh could be something, but more likely a bench player" starts for me.

CJ Weins is on the list twice at 129 & 145...

He should not be at 129, so I'm concerned I accidentally replaced the correct #129 with him & someone is missing. But that seems like a tomorrow problem.

(Also, happy birthday CJ Weins!)
I solved the mystery of CJ Weins...he was on the previous list twice, too.

Updating the OP to remove 1 of them, add the 2 guys I forgot, & update the levels on Romero, Bolden & Blanco. & I also fixed a few wonky Rule 5 dates.

@JM3, add my thanks and admiration to the growing list, for this and the dailies.
Short essay question for when you have a minute: compare and contrast Johanfran and Brooks Brannon.
Thx for the kind words!

They are both fairly big-framed, but athletic. Both hit the ball hard & have a chance at sticking at catcher.

JOHANFRAN has a cooler name, hit FCL pitching better, is 8 months younger & is healthier.

I feel like I'm already a bit out on a limb on him (I have him at 26 compared to SoxProspects at 45).

The biggest difference between a guy like him & a guy like YOELY is the pop. Arias is hitting .350, but he's only slugging .450 (.872 OPS).

YOELY has a .354 average but is slugging .575 (.977 OPS). It's much easier to project a guy with that much pop than it is a singles hitter. Arias could grow into it, & could become fantastic, but I put him about as high as I am comfortable doing right now with that much projection still remaining.

Oops, forgot to put Butler & Ramsey in A-ball. It can wait for the next full update.

More concerned with the mental well-being of a guy like Oscar Rangel who is a Bottom 10 guy but in AAA who has to know he has taken his chosen profession as far as he can without any further chance of advancement.

he might actually no longer be in the system after that one AB in Worcester in late June.

He's had 30 PAs in the past 4 years & they basically view him as a bullpen catcher as far as I can tell.

He's inactive & on the Developmental list.

I agree Yoeilin is more interesting. I think my preference is for a higher weight on upside. Once you get to 12-15ish I think the system transitions to the land of relievers and utility players if everything breaks right. For now at least I think there is some reason to hope Arias is more than that.

I think some of those players in that range have higher upside than that. But yeah, I think I definitely weight upside more than the SoxProspects guys, but not as much as you would.

With FCL and DSL concluding (I think) I thought it would be interesting to check in on how Clay Davenport projects the batter's performances to the player's peak. The number to look at is EqA, which is a total offensive number like wRC+, but scaled so .260 is league average. Obviously a lot of noise projecting players a decade out from being at their best, but here they are.

I don't really understand the methodology. What are the projections based on?

A-Ball Roman Anthony has a .250 EqA, but A+ Roman Anthony has a .296 EqA.

So it's obviously not scouting & probably not the underlying data. & it's probably not #s as Yoely's are better than Arias's & they're basically the same age. Unless they are heavily weighing k/bb, in which case Musett should probably be higher than he is.

& they really aren't projecting success for Johnfrank because A-Ball Johnfrank has a .204 EqA.

Idk, it's interesting, but do they have a history of actually being good at predicting things with his methodology?

It is an entirely box score stats regression. Like I said a decade out there is a lot of noise, but it is a data point. I think we heard that Roman Anthony's trackman data was very good in A ball even though the production wasn't there before the promotion. Obviously that sort of stuff isn't reflected here. 99 ABs for Johnfrank isn't a huge sample anyway, I'd lean towards him not being that good.

It also doesn't factor in age for the level, does it? But yeah, it's interesting, & I always enjoy more #s.

It does factor in age. The DSL numbers are going to be the most noisy because they are the farthest away and that league is so inconsistent, but the DSL is otherwise pretty opaque. It at least gives an indication of who to pay attention to when they come stateside.

Will have to keep an eye on how their #s compare to this list from yesterday.

Doubt this list will even be in line with my last rankings...just going to go based on feelings & then add where they were on my most recent rankings after.

& yeah, I guess it must factor in age, my bad.

I know he recently was promoted to Greenville and promptly got hurt, but is there a consensus here for what we have with Mikey Romero in terms of upside? Former first round pick in 2022 and taken ahead of Roman Anthony, but so far his stats have been underwhelming.

The "drafted ahead" thing is a bit of a red herring as Romero got a $2.3m signing bonus to Roman's $2.5m signing bonus.

The results have been pretty underwhelming so far, & the back injuries don't exactly instill a lot of confidence, but he apparently led A-Ball in line drive rate prior to being promoted & he has pretty good tools, especially if he gains strength while maintaining athleticism as he matures.

To me upside is like pretty good starting 2B who hits 15-20 homers with a 115 wRC+ or something? That probably happens like less than 10% of the time, though I would guess.

Good post.

I think that Mikey is getting the Nick Yorke treatment to an extent. Good year one, but injuries derailed year two. Everyone says "stock is falling". I think that the skills are still there, but he needs to get past this back stuff and have a good year three to restore confidence. A good year three and maybe some post-season extra play, and he's back on track.

Here's my latest update. I think it's just Zach Penrod in & Graham Hoffman out, & it's still a top 258, but I could be missing something. I included the columns about how they were acquired this time. It's only 11 days later, but it should be sharper than the last rankings.

1091st pick? He must have a huge chip on his shoulder,.
I made up for all the slights Rio has ever suffered with a thread title dedicated to him & his own feature story - albeit done on my phone so it lacks a lot of journalistic merit.
