He's been a C the past few years, but for the first decade or so of his career, he was primarily a PF. He would regularly dominate matchups against KG, for example. And back when he entered the league, the game was still geared towards big, plodding centers and Duncan was pretty mobile. He could step out and nail that jumper off the backboard or take his man down low. He could rebound and play D against 4s or 5s. When the Spurs had Robinson, they made for a dominating defensive front court. He probably could've been a C his entire career if it wasn't for Robinson. When the Admiral retired, Duncan played more C, allowing Big Shot Bob to play PF. As he aged, he slowed down and had to play C, but he was a dominant PF in his youth. What makes Duncan a PF? When I watched him(rarely) I thought he played center even if he wasn't listed as the C.
I still remember the day the Celtics lost the lottery and missed out on Duncan. That one hurt.
