The Super Bowl Thread

It's kind of nice, if fairly inconsequential in the grand scheme, to have Michael Floyd "playing" Julio Jones for the scout team this week. Not that he's even within miles of the guy, talent-wise, but he can give them looks better than a typical practice squad-er would.
Good point. Obviously Floyd isn't Julio -- pretty much no one is -- but I don't think they're "miles" away from each other either. There aren't many 6'3", 220 wide receivers who were taken in the 1st round of the draft. Going by raw attributes -- leaving aside hands and route running and the rest -- Julio's faster, stronger, and quicker, but not many guys are a better double for Julio than Floyd.

Who knows how much it will end up helping, but I always remember how much the team and players credited Damon Huard's uncanny imitation of Peyton before the 2003 AFC Championship Game with their performance that day.

The second bolded part kind of suggests that you don't understand what the first bolded part means. But whatever.
Maybe I was not clear. Let me try again.
I strongly believe that in specific situations, BB knows what the odds/percentages are across the NFL for doing different things. In the context of extra point vs. 2 point conversions, BB knows that an extra point has an xx% success rate, and that a 2 point conversion has xx% success rate. Now, I don't know what those success rates are over the past few years, but that doesn't really matter. What matters is that BB knows, and that he is going to kick the extra point every single time. The only exception he would make would be if the Pats need the points. My stance is that unless it is the 4th Q, he is kicking an extra point.

I know what you are trying to say, that if ATL sucks at defending the 2 point conversion, that means the odds of the Pats making it are better, which would make BB more inclined to run the 2 point vs. kicking the extra point. Which I don't agree with.

Really? I could care less about any excuses anyone makes. Haters gonna hate. Whiners gonna whine. Anything that makes the Falcons less strong is fine by me.

PS: I will be pretty surprised if Alex Mack isn't out there and looking like himself. This smells like a misdirection play to me.

I've seen him then go on the NFL network and be fairly complementary to the Patriots. It's a weird existence some of these goofs live. Troll here, give straightforward option/analysis there. I guess you just can't be reasonable and consistent, and hope to get any notice in that business anymore. Put me in the camp of thoroughly enjoying the salty goodness of their tears now.
It's the same with Boomer Esiason... when he knows he's within earshot of Boston listeners he is pretty balanced for the most part. When on a more national outlet he is willing to throw in a jab or say something more opposing to the Patriots. In some ways I think they are playing to their perceived audiences. I can take it with a grain of salt when I see those pieces/comments. How long did Pats fans recite a roughing the passer complaint against the Raiders - until they had something better and more recent to talk about.

The guy I laugh at is Falk. He is butt hurt beyond compare... about something he "knows" but can't prove... because "Greatest Show on Turf" cant lose unless THEY cheated. It isn't possible they just got beat. You know in his mind there is an endless loop of "does not compute". It drowns out all the other success he's had. Warner has had his moments, but at least be now just publicly takes the high road.

I don't listen to his NY radio show, but he's always Pro Pats on CBS and Inside the NFL.

I know there's a tremendous recency bias in watching sports, but there's really nothing that can happen in this Super Bowl that will be better or worse than the extremes we've already seen during this run. Upsetting the Rams in a massive upset for the first triumph can never be duplicated. Same with the ending of SB 49. And historically nothing will be worse than the Scottish Game. So, we're kind of bookended in what'll happen Sunday.

Mostly true, though something like the Pats cruising to a blowout before some kind of catastrophic collapse would be pretty hard to take.

Except that this would be #5 for TB and BB which becomes a record-breaking historical NFL event. Throw in a little DFG revenge for extra credit and it would be a uniquely high point.

Goodell answers questions from fans today. I wonder if they'll be heavily screened?
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year finalists Larry Fitzgerald, Eli Manning and Greg Olsen will host a Fan Forum event to answer questions from fans on Friday

This. Basically the 2006 AFCCG in the SB would be awful and something we haven't seen. Or a last second 40+ yard FG loss. Hopefully we finally get the (positive) blowout that has always eluded this franchise.

Dari Knowkhah of ESPN: If Jones has a good game Atlanta wins. But if he's under 60 yards they still may win cuz they're 5-0 when he's under 60 yards.

Of course that means they're only 6-5 when he's over 60 yards, but whatever.

Unless there is a **shudder** surprise retirement announcement after the game.
I don't think Goodell has any chance of retiring. It would take an atomic bomb to get rid of that cockroach

Dari aside, these stats seem to suggest that perhaps Jones is not the guy who you must stop. I think somoene upthread (or maybe in the "When Atlanta Has the Ball" thread) opined that you can let Jones have his, you just don't want the rest of the guys, especially the RBs, to run wild. When the Falcons rush for 90 or more, incl playoffs, they are 12-2 (and one loss was in OT).

Compared to Pitt:
Freeman < Bell
Coleman > Williams

Jones > Brown
Sanu > Rogers (but not by as much as I would have guessed, in terms of stats)
Gabriel > Coates (ditto)

Ryan > Big Ben

Steelers D > Falcons D

Bonfire, grill, chili, beer, kegs, liquor, cards...this is not enough to preoccupy me tomorrow.

Come sooner, game.

Stop the big plays and make them beat you in the red zone, that's what they do, right? Against the Eagles Jones went 10/135 with a long of 29 yards and the Falcons lost 24-15. He went 4/66, 7/139, 9/174, 7/113 in their other losses, but of course the Falcons scored a lot more than 15 points in each of those games.

But if he goes 12/300 again I predict things don't go well for the Patriots (although I once saw some random guy put up 63 in an NBA playoff game and his team still lost).

Better than my plan. Kid with bronchitis, wife with walking pneumonia and basically trying to get through the day in order to hopefully have everyone settled by 6:40. I'd kill for a bonfire, grill and booze right now.

This is my guess at the plan---shade someone deep on Jones' side and prevent big plays, but focus more on shutting down run and dump-offs. If Atlanta can execute 10 play drives and get the TD at the end it's a shootout; if they fail a few times it will look more like the Pittsburgh game.

Sorry everyone. I was running errands and couldn't find what I needed at Sears so without thinking went to Home Depot. Didn't realize what had happened til i was back to my car. Plus I was wearing a red hoodie.

It's over, all is lost. Blame me.
