Well, this sucks. This has the smell of "Well, we thought we could manage this nonoperatively but maybe we just bite the bullet and operate on it and punt this year"
I'd like the Good Doctor to chime in. The always dangerous research online seems to think surgery is rarely necessary, but career ending if required.
If he has surgery it would likely be similar to what Machado had, and he seems to be pretty well recovered. From what I can tell Rodriguez had a patellar subluxation while Machado had a full dislocation- similar mechanism of injury but Machado's was more severe

Not picking on you here at all, but this is a good example of why internet medicine is dangerous. The primary study cited in that article was published in 1997 - most modern surgical and rehab techniques used to treat this weren't even invented then.Thanks Doc.
