I truly don't know how to distinguish Baltic state names but I think Latvia is the one with Riga right?
Yep.

Lithuania is the one that has the super passionate basketball culture, where the Sabonises are from (and Valanciunis, Ilgauskas, etc). Population of 2.8 million, has some Olympic bronze medals and 3rd-place finish in FIBA World Cup. Those guys are to basketball as Jamaicans are to track and field. So I saw an -is surname and made a bad assumption.

Acquiring KP for Brogdon, who myself and presumably much of Celtic Nation had little to no emotional attachment, would have been sweet. It hurts that Smart won’t be a Celtic when the next banner goes up this season or next, but banners are the goal in Boston. KP is the better bet to win it all this season over Smart.

This trade will give me a Western Conference team to root for now.

God dammit. I told you all I was gonna cry.

How many times have we seen that play where Smart pokes the dribble away from the player he's guarding and then dives on the floor past him to grab the ball. It's like his patented play. Other players steal, but he always put everything on the line for just the slightest edge.
His next patented play was driving to the hoop with no advantage and throwing up a shot while making his "EYY" sound to try and draw a foul.

I said this in the Porzingis thread, but no other Boston player departure has gutted me like this…not even Brady or Pedro. Now after reading his tweet, I’m gonna go spend the remainder of the evening in my feelings.
You know, I'm finding it has really affected me too. And I'm very excited about the new construction of the team, but damn, he was such a great Celtic.

There's probably another thread for this, but when Mo Vaughn left I was 13. That one gutted me. Clemens leaving was my awakening to free agency, but Mo hurt more. I can't think of a trade that has been this affecting other than Nomar.

I imagine this is a function of age as much as anything.

For me it was Freddy Lynn and Pudge in the same fucking offseason. Biggest 1-2 offseason nutpunch ever. Ever.

Different sports which may or may not lessen the blow, but in 2020 Boston lost Tom Brady, Mookie Betts and Zdeno Chara (and an honorable mention for Gordon Hayward). Kind of a rough stretch.

This is amazing collection of highlights--very few players would have a highlight reel that looks like this. There are not many game winning shots, or poster dunks on here, just a collection of gritty, intense and winning basketball plays. He truly was a unique entity on the court and watching all his signature moments make me really sad he is gone.

That’s like watching a #33 highlight clip if he also averaged 24 / 10 / 6 a game.

Sounds like Brad blindsided him, which sucks, but at the end of the day it’s a business. Feel bad for Marcus because it’s obvious he doesn’t want to leave.

I think Brad blindsided himself as well ;) .

In a very shot time, you had the Wizards deciding to trade Porzingis in time for him to exercise his player option, and then the Clippers backing out of the Brogdon deal. I tend to doubt Stevens had any plans to trade Marcus until the stars aligned at the last minute, which happens in the NBA (as well as other major sports leagues).

Bill Belichick rubbed off on Brad Stevens for sure. It’s Brad’s job to put the best players out there to win a title. I think he has another arrow in his quiver that other GM’s don’t have because of his long coaching history, including coaching some of the players on this team.

He felt that KP was the perfect availability big he could acquire without losing JB, and when he couldn’t get it done with Brogdon, he sacrificed Marcus. I’m guessing that it must have killed him emotionally to have to do that, but it was best for the roster. I am surprised that he didn’t call Marcus, but maybe the agent heard it first, and got to Marcus before Brad could.

Smart plus two number one picks for a player who is better than Smart, and can fill a most needed role, is a slam dunk. It sucks for Marcus, but I look forward to him diving into the legs of Curry and LeBron four (or more) games a year. It was a great pickup for a Memphis team with enough talent to get to the Finals.

Jake Fischer said they had been shopping Smart (along with Brogdon) all summer. They had also apparently talked to the Grizzlies earlier in the day and set up the framework, as a fallback plan.

I believe Brad told Marcus that, but there’s no way he just spur of the moment decided to move him, IMO.

Marcus directly contradicts that second sentence. He claims that the org. Told him he was “all good” just a week before the trade

Same here. I think Ainge (or Stevens) said that Marcus does things no other player does. At his best that's true. Its very hard to get a grip on giving that up that sot of singularity, even if 1) he may not be at his best any more; and 2)the team may be better off in the aggregate replacing those things with more things that other players can do, but with a guy, Porzingis, who does them better.
Marcus made them unique. I'm going to miss that as a fan. I'll miss it a bit less if not-Marcus makes them *better*.

Man, the Paul Millsap game seems like a lifetime ago, but I still prefer it over the Harden game.

The last 7 of those plays are all absolutely bonkers. Like, you couldn't hit enough buttons to do that on a video game. Only in real life.

After watching that video, Marcus should patent the Dive to the floor, BOX OUT the opponent's legs for loose balls. It's what he did to Steph a couple of years ago that got Kerr up in arms, but it's such an effective way to steal the ball.

Smart is a great get for Memphis. This really has become the hallmark of Brad's tenure so far. Recognizing the other side's needs & creating the proverbial "win-win" trade.

Derrick White had played himself into the starting PG & doubt Smart would have loved a secondary role to DW.

+adding KP in his prime (age-wise) is a no-brainer on several levels.
