Super Bowl 51: Where to watch in Boston?

Pretty self explanatory. Where is the best place to watch the game in two weeks if you are an out of towner? My wife and I will be in town for Extreme Beer Fest and would like to buy tickets to a Super Bowl event at a local bar that has good craft beer and decent food. My wife (for good reason) would prefer to find a venue that is selling tickets so that I don't have to camp out at 11:00 a.m. and get arrested at half time for drinking too much.

Your help would be much appreciated.

Lulu's in Allston is worth looking into - one of the few bars I can think of that has all three of an awesome taplist, great food, and sports TV's. No idea about tickets to get in, my gut says they won't be but I'm really not sure. The Yard House (probably the one near Fenway) might fit the bill, too. Less great on the beer front but decent enough that it could work out.

Where are you staying? Honestly, there are a million places that will be fun to watch the game at.

I'll be at the Godfrey Hotel. I don't want to have to be there for 11:00 a.m. in order to have a seat with a view of a television.

I can't say that I have watched a super bowl in the city, but there's a ton of bars right by your hotel. I wouldn't expect any of them to be too badly crowded. If you want a sports bar, there's Champions (I've never been there) that is probably an uber/cab ride away but it looks like they accept reservations http://www.championsboston.com/

For an more traditional old-school sports bar there's Fours near the Garden/North Station but again there's a million bars within five minutes of where you are. You can probably go to some place for the day, like a museum or a neighborhood or something and then just walk into any bar in that area for the game.

Champions is pretty sterile. Nice setup, has a higher-end feel than your typical sports bar, but it's soulless. It's off the lobby of Marriott in Kendall, so it's pretty much a hotel bar in every way.

Small point, but it's in Copley, not Kendall. But your overall assessment is correct.

To redsox13: How crafty of beer do you want? Do you want somewhere that has a viable alternative to Bud/Coors/Yingling or do you want somewhere with a real craft beer selection?

Copley was the original Champions, claimed to be the First Sports Bar in America. Owned by Bob Woolf (Tiny Archbald's agent, also Jim Plunkett and that Bird guy). Dave Cowens used to hang there now and then.

Have you been there lately? They moved it upstairs, I dunno, 8 years ago, into the mall. It doesn't really feel like a sports bar anymore.

Check out City Tap House in the Seaport. Brand new, great beer list, good setup and huge TVs. Not sure about tickets or even how crowded it will be though.

That place doesn't do too well with large crowds. They cut off the bar and restaurant so that divider and the tables in the bar area make it a shitshow when crowded. The two Friday post-work happy hours I've been to meant it took forever to move or get a beer.

I watched the Houston game with friends at Fours, it was good all around, plenty of TVs, easy beers, fans were hyped

Thanks for the heads up on those Fridays, considering I live across the street. It's like we're not even friends anymore.

Humblebrag.

And one time was drinks with my gf before dinner for our anniversary. The other, well, I guess I was just avoiding you (and it was unfortunately only one beer before I got to buy $11 beers at the B's-Hawks game last week).

I was at the B's game that night too. Sigh.

Also - congrats on the sex.

Yeah, Champions is pretty brutal. Have watched a Pats game there before and it feels like an airport bar.

Would love to find a venue like Gingerman or something similar to JM Curley or Little Donkey.

I might actually see of Row 34 has anything going on so I can pound down some Trillium IPAs. EDIT: Scratch that. One TV at Row 34.

City Tap House is across he street from Row 34. It's exactly what you're looking for if it doesn't get super crowded. Legit beer list and huge TVs at the bar.

I've been to the City Tap House in Washington DC in the last month and I wasn't too bad. I think it was more a product of the town than the establishment, but there were kids everywhere. I disliked virtually every meal that I had in DC because of the atmosphere though, so hopefully I'll have better luck in Boston.

My wife is getting a haircut at a salon in the seaport on the Friday before the game, so maybe I'll check it out in the afternoon for some advanced scouting.

You're very correct about the legit beer list they carry. They keep the glasses tiny though.

The issue is that most the places you mention aren't exactly great sports viewing places. I guess Stoddard's might fit the bill in that they have several TVs in the bar area, good beer, and decent enough food. Also close to your hotel.
