I mean, the Phillies were starting a AAA lineup and they lost when former Red Sox prospect Nefi Ogando gave up a grand slam in the 7th. Ogando hasn't made it past AA yet, so it isn't like he is going to feature in the Phillies 'pen this year.

The Phillies are still awful but Cotillo should give a bit more context.

And those who read such tweets should know enough to provide that context if he doesn't

Here's more context : The Univ of Tampa team that beat the Phil's AAA team is a Div II team...a great one, but still context worth noting.

The pressure on ownership/Amaro is going to be enormous if that team starts 5-20 and they're still paying, say, Cliff Lee $25 million and Papelbon $13 million.
Someone can correct me if I'm wrong (and I'm on my phone) didn't Paps say he wouldn't waive his no trade at the DL last season?

Not here
There is no way in hell Papelbon wants to stay with a shitty team. If he said that, it's for leverage.

Every Giants beat writer says on Twitter that Pence is expected to be out 6-8 weeks.

Uh-oh, Tigers SS Iglesias helped off field during BP, limping badly. Looks like leg injury. Trainers just helped him into clubhouse.

Do we know whether it is related to this injury of a few days ago? He hurt his shin sliding into second base, but the injury was not related to his shin woes of last year, says the article.

I despise spring training. I mean, I am excited when it comes as baseball season is near, but I feel like I am holding my breath for a month plus hoping none of the key Sox players get hurt.

Cliff Lee has a torn Flexor Tendon, which he will attempt to pitch through.

Gavin Floyd has a stress fracture in his elbow, out indefinitely.

I don't think we'll ever see Cole Hamels traded. I just go ... at how dense Amaro is.

I don't think this means that much. I know Amaro has an image with the media and fan base that is less than stellar when it comes to trade demands and holding on to guys too long, but he can't really say anything other than what he did. He can't admit defeat with the Cliff Lee injury. Teams will offer even less if he comes out in public and shows a sense of urgency to deal Hamels. He's 31 and has made 30+ starts over the last seven years. For Sox fans willing to bet on Lester's health for five or six more years, Amaro betting on Hamels to stay healthy for half a season isn't really a stretch. If he feels like he can get someone to bite at the deadline and overpay, it's a dice roll that's not as risky as it was to not trade Lee after his age 34 season when they finished 23 games out of first place.

He'll get reamed if Hamels gets hurt because it looks as though he asked for too much and scared away suitors, but Cliff Lee getting injured really shouldn't be the standard. If he trades for fear of injuries to his players, there's a chance he'd settle for less than trades than he should actually get. Settling won't help rebuild his team any faster. Absurd demands won't either, but that's another issue.

Joe Maddon just killed a long Cubs rally in the 4th inning by inserting his 3B coach as a pinch-hitter.  That 3B coach's name is Will Ferrell.  And he's staying in the game to play 1B.

The larger point there is why is he even talking to the press like this? I can't remember a GM in this situation spouting off so much; I know journalists are asking, but that's what they do. He doesn't have to answer. What is there to be gained? The whole conversation with Jason Stark is like a WEEI caller - the journalist just keeps him talking, and he just keeps going and going. His stance on keeping Hamels until he gets an offer that he likes is certainly a defensible one. What drives the "Amaro is an idiot" meme is this type of silly conversation where he sounds like Joey from the North End.

It's like he needs to justify himself to the press or something, and frankly that's probably a big part of the problem. He's too worried about how he's going to look. The funny thing is it's too late for that, he looks bad already - though he probably sees trading Hamels as a way to salvage his reputation.

And it kept me on the Ark(c) [I can't remember] for another 5 minutes. He even fielded a base hit. Cubs got guys on second and third and ended the rally with some sort of out.

Great quote about AJP in the article above:<br />
<br />
While playing for the Red Sox last year, the veteran catcher was ejected from a game when he turned to rookie umpire Quinn Wolcott and said, "Give me a ball, a new ball -- one you can see."<br />

Yep, and that one was a bomb off King Felix.  And then he hit his 8th a couple of innings later.  He is now 12-25, with 8 homers and 2 doubles this spring.  His OPS is over 2.000.  Cubs still haven't officially committed to him starting the season with the big club, but I can't imagine what else the kid has left to prove. I don't care how bad he might be defensively, you find a spot for a bat like that in your lineup.

They'd be insane to start him in the bigs on Opening Day, as keeping him in AAA for literally two weeks gains them an extra year of team control on the back end.

I don't disagree with that, and I probably wrote that poorly.  What I meant is that I don't think the Cubs have announced that they will bring him up immediately, although I guess that they don't necessarily need to tell anyone.

It looks like Boras may sue them if he starts the season in AAA, I'd think that would be thrown out even with 8 HRs in 25 ABs (amazing) but who knows.

I think the whole situation sucks. You can't really fault the Cubs for wanting to keep him in the minors for the 2 weeks and you can't fault Boras for being annoyed.

I can easily fault Boras.  Bryant is an employee.  Where he plays and what he does is up to his employer, not Boras.  Everyone knows the rules and that both sides try to work the system.  He needs to shut up and stop creating an issue when there shouldn't be one.

This is absolutely an issue though with the current agreement though. It's not like this is the first time it's come up.

How likely is it he signs an extension before FA though, with Boras as his agent.

It would determine whether they're buying out 1 or 2 years of FA, so it would still matter.

It's definitely an issue.  That doesn't mean Boras going nuts in the media is the way to handle it though.  If Bryant's spring numbers in 25 ABs were shit we'd be hearing from Boras about how exhibition numbers don't mean anything.  Until the system is changed Chicago can do whatever they want, and there's no way in hell Boras would win if he files a grievance.
