Carlson Smith, Fernando Abad, Craig Kimbrel and if you keep one of Brad Ziegler/Junichi Tazawa has potential to be a deep bullpen. Not bad.

EDIT: Probably need a bonafide setup man. Next year, I mean.

Abad is arbitration eligible next season. If it's really just for Light that feels like a steal.

They've been missing a solid LH RP basically since the Miller trade.

Good add for this year and 2017 even if the Orioles and Blue Jays don't have many LH bats.

Edit: And while Ross might be a decent 6th/7th inning guy, I would trust Abad to come out and face Crush Davis in a close & late situation.

a roster move was coming today anyways with Kimbrel returning. I think Layne is definitely gone.

It's gotta be Layne. Ross has looked pretty good over the last month or whenever it was Farrell let him out of the doghouse.

Good deal.
Abad's fine except for the walk rate (unless he intentionally walks a lot of righties). I don't think he displaces anyone except Layne.

Has to be Layne + to make a spot for Kimbrel & Abad.
Do they option Kelly back down or do we move Clay by 3PM?

Imagine they make room for Kimbrel by jettisoning Layne tonight. They don't have to do anything for Abad until tomorrow unless they are going to rush him to Seattle, Mirabelli-style. Anything can happen between now and then.

Does Martinez have any options? I wouldn't be opposed to keeping an extra pitcher. Martinez is pretty old, so I assume he doesn't have options, in which case it would have to be Kelly going back down I would think.

Abad + Ziegler should be paired for the 8th inning on a match-up basis, to set up Kimbrel.

They're death on same-handed batters.

Taz and Barnes and the rest of the crew can handle the earlier stuff.

The next one who makes an "Abad trade" pun (and we're over 20 now) buys beer for the rest of us

Martinez does not have options. That's how he came to be a member of the Red Sox in the first place...Cleveland DFAd him because they needed the roster spot.

Can we not call a guy "death" on LHB when he allowed an 850 OPS against them just last year? He's probably better than Layne but they didn't exactly acquire Javier Lopez here.

I kinda have a soft spot for Light but I guess you gotta do what you gotta do.

Just 2 IBB this year. He walks a lot of people, always has.

Now we need to trade for Tulowitzki and we'll have ourselves a morning show (Troy and Abad in the morning!).

Weird how a guy can have a 110 career ERA+ but also have a career W-L of 6-24. He has a career OPS+ against of .950 in tie games, which has no doubt been a big part of that W-L record. 206/259/326 against him when he comes in with the lead though.
He also only has one career save in 297 relief appearances. The old school "stats" don't make him look good, but who cares as long as he gets people out.

Just checked the rest of the pen bb/9 this year. Not exactly stellar
Kelly (sss) 7.27/9
Layne 4.4/9
Kimbrel 4.09/9
Clay 3.86/9
Abad 3.71/9
Barnes 3.67/9
Ross 3.35/9
Ziegler 3.09/9

Tazawa is the only active reliever under 3.

Abad likes to challenge left-handed batters, as he should with good velocity on the sinker and 4-seamer, and 1-to-7 bite with the curve. He throws a lot of strikes, and isn't afraid to throw a middle-middle fastball. He usually pitches around righties, staying on the outside edge, and very rarely throwing inside or up in the zone -- which probably explains his propensity to walk righties (5.7 BB/9 vs RHB in 2015-2016, but only 1.5 BB/9 vs LHB). He's not quite a LOOGY, but the Sox don't want him facing more than 1 RHB per appearance. Ideally, he will come in to fan 2 lefties, walk a righty, and fan 2 more lefties.

Pat Light's classy valedictory tweet:

I want to thank the @redsox for everything they've done for me and my career! Looking forward…

That said, here is his previous tweet from a couple months back...
I think @billyjoel is my new favorite musician of all time...just such good music, wish I could see him at @fenwaypark #billyjoel #pianoman

Layne lives to see another day with Kelly optioned to AAA to make room for Kimbrel. At this point I'm pretty sure Mrs Layne would pull the plug on Tommy so I can't imagine he survives it when Abad is added to the roster.

Abad's got some flaws, and like others I've got a soft spot for Light... but with the price of relievers on the market, Dombrowski found excellent value here.
