Pats Training Camp Advice

I’m thinking about taking my 12 year old grandson to the Pats camp. The last time I went to a training camp, they were still held at Bryant College.

I’m sure it’s much different now. Any and all advice or comments will be appreciated.

Went once in 2021, aka the Cam Newton Mac Jones battle.

Check for schedule updates on patriots.com, both prior to your planned date and early the morning of. Weather can cause them to move practice inside in which case it’s closed to the public.

Get there early so you can get a seat in the grandstand. There are no bad seats in the stands, IMO.

It does get hot and there is no shade, so either bring water or be prepared to buy some. And sunscreen.

The day I went all the drills were on the far side of the practice area for the first 30 minutes. Then they spread out to all the fields.

I go one weekend day each year. I'll echo getting the grandstand seats, but I'll say they do fill up early. I think the area opens up an hour before the practice. You may also want to bring a small blanket or something to sit on as there's a grassy hill where people sit when the stands are full. There's always a bunch of activities around the practice that your grandson might appreciate (throwing footballs through targets, kicking field goals, an obstacle course). Additionally, last year the players started signing autographs again after practice, so if he wants to get a signature it helps to have a sharpie and something to sign.

I've gone (at least one day) for 20 years straight.

Highly recommend it --- "if" the weather is nice.

If it's too hot --- yikes. If it's raining heavy --- yikes.

There are no shady areas and no coverings. Plan accordingly.

Training camp is right around the corner. Hard to believe.

July 21 - rookies
July 25 - veterans

Things I am paying attention to:

1. The flow of the offense. How do they look under BOB? Organized? In sync?

2. The offensive line. I want to see if they gel or if - like was the case in last year's training camp - they look completely overwhelmed and out of sync.

3. The dynamic rookies. I can't wait to see Gonzalez, White, Mapu, and even Douglas perform.

4. Mac Jones. If he's bad, the team will struggle. If he's good, they can be highly competitive. I want to see him make The Leap this year.

5. Injuries. Always an issue. I just hope they make it out of camp with as few injuries as possible.

As others have said, water and sunscreen are a must, there is almost zero shade for fans. I'd also mention you are going to see a lot more positional drills and 1 v 1s than you are larger group activities though maybe my small sample size (only been to three camp practices) is skewing things here. Regardless its a great way to burn a few hours and scratch the Pats itch before the season gets going. If you have interests in the outdoors (fishing, hiking, camping, hunting, etc.) then the Bass Pro shop is pretty close to the practice fields and worth a stop as well.

Another tip: if you have the flexibility to go any of the days, go to an announced full pads practice. Likely will see more and better 11 on 11 scrimmaging those days
