If the offense was throwing all over the defense that's not good either though. Not a good start to camp, if it is as bad as some of the beat guys are saying we will clearly be seeing it a week from tomorrow on full display.

That's always the issue. By way of extreme example, how well did the Bears' offense do in practice in '85.If the offense was throwing all over the defense that's not good either though.
To that point, they are the only ones I've seen who have been "meh" on Mac's performance this training camp, even Mike who's generally really high on him. Obviously not a reason for concern, but still, a lot more substance in their critique (not getting the ball out in time, scrambling around too often, deep throws sometimes arrive too late, most of redzone success on jump balls and wide open pick plays) than the usual "Mac was 16/19 in the competitive portion of practice" you generally read from the beat these days.As has been true for literal decades, the best and most balanced, and often critical, coverage you’ll find of the patriots is on patriots.com.
Former Patriots lineman Rich Ohrnberger found himself in a predicament and knew he was going to be late for practice because he overslept.
“I wake up, my phone died overnight, and I realize I’m waking up to the sound of birds chirping and not my alarm going off,” Ohrnberger said on his radio show, “The Hartman & Rich O Show." “I am frantic. I don’t even bother looking at the clock, I know I’m late.”
But instead of fessing up and fearful of being released, Ohrnberger, who was drafted by the Patriots in fourth round of the 2009 NFL draft and played there until 2011, did what any non-rational human would do: He decided to have a little fender-bender.
“I see a church van in front of me that’s all dinged up and it’s got the black smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe and I’m like, ‘I’m gonna hit this car,'" Ohrnberger says. "It’s better to pay the insurance than embarrass myself by being late for a Patriots team meeting.”
As others have stated elsewhere, if these new helmets help, then why are they only being employed during a few TC practices?View attachment 53954
Noticing lots of pics with these helmets. They are comically large, but if they help then I'm glad to see some new tech being employed.

It was 30 the past few years. Everything used to be $40 on both sides until they started doing different pricing for stadium side vs 10/11. Stadium side the past few years was 60 and 10/11 was $30.Hasn't parking always been $40-$50 in P10/11?
I mean, a $20 bump isn't going to keep me from going to my preferred P11 location, but damn.It was 30 the past few years. Everything used to be $40 on both sides until they started doing different pricing for stadium side vs 10/11. Stadium side the past few years was 60 and 10/11 was $30.
Is there a single offense in the league not led by Carson Wentz that doesn't look efficient in 7-on-7s? Maybe the DL really is a wrecking crew but I'll be honest, I was 100% in the "it's early, they'll figure it out on offense" camp, but now I'm beginning to worry.View: https://twitter.com/PhilAPerry/status/1556753778220597248?s=20&t=sIKfaq1TOapYNppDVf5PZg
“Patriots defense is running roughshod over the offense. Highlights for that side were “sacks” by Christian Barmore and Matt Judon during a third-down period.
Offense looks broken. Can’t protect. Losing 1-on-1s. Blitzes getting through. No run game. Miscommunication on routes.”

“A thought after watching the Patriots offense look efficient in 7-on-7 but struggle notably in multiple 11-on-11s: Might be time to give Dante Scarnecchia a call for an independent evaluation.”
Yeah me too. I thought the offense would be really good this year and it was the defense we needed to worry about. Clearly a problem. One thing I'd note is that essentially every beat writers hates Patricia, Patricia doesn't seem to give reporters any useful nuggets, and Patricia seems to be the o-line coach so it wouldn't be shocking if some of the oline issues are being magnified a little--but the reports are so consistent that it is an issue. The consistent camp reports that the line has been anywhere from mediocre to a disaster are about as concerning as can be. An offense cannot function if the line plays poorly, period. Virtually any other issue with an offense can be theoretically compensated for to some extent, but not this one. They don’t really have a ton of time to figure it out, either, before the season starts.
Good point. First round picks tend to get covered a ton. And I haven’t seen much about him. What about Cole Strange? He's in there with the first team offense, was the team's first round pick and no one comments on his performance while talking about the OL's struggles? Is he part of them? Has he held his own while players around him fuck up? I know he has lost more matchups than he's won in 1-on-1's, but those usually aren't all that fair to evaluate a guard's performance. How has he looked in team periods? Crazy how no one has anything to say about him.

I mean "Strange has taken a lot of coaching and is improving" is about as generic a descriptor of a player's training camp performance as you can get. Thornton has had 10 times the coverage. I know there's only so much you can write about a guard, but still. In a day that everyone agrees the OL was garbage, I'd like to know how our first rounder fared.Bedard said he struggled on day one but got better.
Reading between the lines (particularly of the Pats.com stuff where they will say positive things but generally don't say many negative things) I think the problems are Owenwu, Center and then Brown in that order. (And they had a new position by position discussion posted today, https://www.patriots.com/news/a-position-by-position-recap-of-the-first-two-weeks-of-patriots-training-camp in which they note that strange is improving, Wynn has transitioned well, Herron and Arlington Hambright are standing out (and Hambright is even earning some first time reps)--so in the notable by omission department you see LT, the centers, and Owenwu.
Totally agree with you--but I don't think our scribes are particularly well equipped to answer that question.I mean "Strange has taken a lot of coaching and is improving" is about as generic a descriptor of a player's training camp performance as you can get. Well, Lazar's whole thing is how he's a film buff that really understands the ins and outs of the game, I'd expect a little more substance than that from him.Totally agree with you--but I don't think our scribes are particularly well equipped to answer that question.
Oh ... sure you doI don't understand why fans of this franchise get nervous about the goings on of August 8. Or August 18 for that matter.
Way too early to draw firm conclusions but not encouraging nonetheless. But we’ll see in a few weeks.I’m not sure we can chalk this up to media bias or to fans getting unnecessarily nervous, way too early. From all I’ve read and heard, from sources we’ve watched and consumed and calibrated over many years, this is more RED FLAG-y than anything I can remember. In fact, I can’t think of what would be second. This sounds like an unprecedented disaster that they’d better fix fast.
But there's no film to dissect yet. Perhaps Thursday will provide more insight.Well, Lazar's whole thing is how he's a film buff that really understands the ins and outs of the game, I'd expect a little more substance than that from him.
But then we'd be worrying that the defense is no good. I'm not saying that the offense isn't looking shitty, but where is the line between "the offense really sucks" and "this defense looks outstanding"?Everyone on the beat is saying the offense looks as bad as they can remember, so I believe it's concerning, especially when coupled with who they have running the show on that side of the ball and the lack of experience in the room. It's not a death sentence obviously, but it's not that early in the process either. The fact that they looked better last year with Mac as a rookie and a ton of receivers in their first year in the system tells me something. Maybe they figure it out in time for the season, sure, but I'd much rather be reading about how Mac looks more comfortable and decisive and the OL is holding their own than this.
This is why, while the reports are somewhat concerning, I am waiting to see what happens Thursday night and then the next two weeks' joint practices before I get overly worried. But then we'd be worrying that the defense is no good. I really don't think how they look in the Preseason game will matter considering how little the starters and immediate backups will likely play. Joint practices will tell us a whole lot, even if the team they'll be sharing the field with isn't anything to write home about. This is why, while the reports are somewhat concerning, I am waiting to see what happens Thursday night and then the next two weeks' joint practices before I get overly worried.
