The Galaxy has acquired Mexican national team star Giovani Dos Santos from Spanish club Villarreal and signed him to a 4 1/2-year contract, the Major League Soccer club confirmed Tuesday.
Terms of the deal were not announced but a Galaxy official, not authorized to speak publicly about the contract, said Dos Santos’ annual salary will not exceed the $6 million a year the team is paying former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.
The team has been chasing Dos Santos since 2011 and has been in negotiations with the player’s agency for weeks. The signing of Dos Santos, a flashy 26-year-old attacking midfielder who has played in two World Cups, could be among the most important in club history. Not only is he a versatile and experienced player, but he will be the first Mexican national team star to join the Galaxy in the prime of his career.
All the goofy salary workarounds do a great job of making it clear to everyone watching that the MLS salary cap is designed to suppress salaries only and that any resultant competitive balance is just a happy accident.soxfan121 said:Nothing about the compensation or contract system in MLS makes one bit of sense.
They should just announce LA gets as many big name players as it wants, fuck everyone else.

nycfc need to get the stadium sorted pronto. Yankee stadium is a disgraceOilCanShotTupac said:Watching NYC-Orlando now and... I dunno.
Excellent crowd and they are vocal.
I really wanted to like this.
But....
The pitch is really narrow
The sod laid over the baseball dirt looks like shit
Playing in a baseball stadium looks weird
The whiff of Man City Jr is unpleasant
The whiff of the Yankees is even more unpleasant
I've been a tepid NYRB supporter. Never been a fan of naming a team after a product.*
But having been to the Red Bulls excellent stadium on Harrison, RBs and their fandom seem much more organic. NYCFC seems like a Frankencreature of bad marketing ideas stitched together.
I will think on it.
Agreed, but it's more than just the stadium. The whole thing just seems... off. Feels like Orlando is a more organic team/fan base already.... NYCFC feels like something designed by focus group.teddykgb said:nycfc need to get the stadium sorted pronto. Yankee stadium is a disgrace
Yeah I got a super weird vibe from the one game I was at, the stadium just isn't conducive to a proper soccer atmosphere in a way that's much more glaring than, say, RFK.OilCanShotTupac said:Agreed, but it's more than just the stadium. Lampard and Gerrard have both withdrawn due to injury now.

Are we sure they didn't withdraw after being informed of this "honor" because they have integrity?

- The Birth of a League - long SI article with tons of quotes from just about everybody, focused on the beginnings of MLS.
J. TODD DURBIN (MLS Director of Player Personnel):After the weekend Jorge says, “What’d you guys think about the game?” He didn’t say it literally, but the basic message was: There were 69,000 people in the stadium and only 2,000 of them knew my teammates; the other 67,000 knew me. If you’d like me to return I would like to have a Ferrari.
MARK ABBOTT (MLS’s First Employee; Architect of League’s Business Plan): I called up Beverly Hills Ferrari and said, “I’ve been asked to buy a Ferrari on behalf of Jorge Campos. I’ve never bought a Ferrari. I need to do some research about it.” They said, “You don’t need to do research. We tell you the price and you pay it.” “That may be, but my guess is there’s some negotiation in this.” And they said, “Not really.” I said, “Look, I understand you say you’re not negotiating the prices but there are other Ferrari dealers we could go to.” He said, “You seem like a nice guy, so this is what I’m prepared to do. I’m going to throw in the AM/FM radio for free.” I was widely teased when I got back to the office.
