The Cubs make me irrationally angry. I should be sympathetic to their plight. But then I remember that Theo left the Sox in the lurch, that Maddon is their manager, that they poached Lester (and Ross!) from the Sox and that they somehow got Rizzo from the Padres after Hoyer oozed his way out of San Diego.

I feel conflicted.
Didn't they poach the former scouting director for the Sox, too? Jared somebody? And Michael Bowden, for god's sake!!

Nice play by Marte .. Russell hustling with two outs .. Good baseball all around.
Yup. This has been a fun game to watch.

Would love to see one of these teams in the WS instead of Mets/Dodgers/Cards.

They also ruined Bartman's life.

Most compelling game I have seen in months. Fuck it, Theo, John, Rizzo and the Gray Wolf are reason enough for me.

If Maddon was the Sox manager, I'd love him.  I still love Theo.  I really still love Jon Lester. And if freaking Sox fans can't understand what it's like to be a Cubs fan right now...well, I got nothing.  Go Cubbies.  Sweep the hateful, wretched Cards.

If Arieta could pitch twice in the NLDS you'd have to think they'd be favourites .. Obviously he can't ..
This is what they paid Lester for, they need him to come up big.

I love the mix of folks rooting for and against the Cubs in this thread.

Also, a granny with the bases loaded by the Pirates there would have been huge- this was an elimination game. Tizzle hitting his in game 2 against the Tigers, they would have been down 0-2 and still could have come back. I mean, down 0-3 is impossible, but 0-2 can be done.

The Cards are going to destroy them. Again.

First time they've ever met in the playoffs, which initially seems crazy, but they've always been in the same division so it does makes sense.

I'd agree with you if they'd played a balanced schedule ..

I think the unbalanced schedule makes it even more egregious that the Pirates and Cubs played tonight.  The Cubs and Bucs were 13-0 against the Mets this year, while having to play in the insane NL Central.  The Mets and Dodgers both feasted on two terrible divisions, and while the Dodgers were a respectable 4-3 against the Cubs, they were 1-5 against PIT and 2-5 against STL.  I know this year was a crazy outlier, but it's still a travesty the 98-win Pirates are out because baseball has dumb playoff seeding rules.

Good lord .. And then trading away EdRo a year later

To be fair to the O's, though, at the time they traded Arrieta he was 27 years old and had a career ERA of 5.46 in 358 innings. I suspect that if he were a homegrown Sox pitcher and got traded at that stage for a more experienced mediocrity like Feldman, we'd probably say it was a solid move.

They've had a half dozen pitching prospects as good as Arrieta and E-Rod in recent years.  I think they're just terrible at developing pitchers.  Thank god.

Yeah if I were a GM I'd be looking at Orioles pitchers and figuring if there might be talent there that's just not being developed correctly.

Agree. It's great the Cubs are in and all but Pittsburgh won 98 freaking games. They deserve better than one game facing the probable Cy Young winner.

It'll never ever happen but if I were czar of baseball there would be no play-in game between teams from the same division. If the two best records among non-division winners are from the same division, the team with the better record should simply advance.

Uh, guys, the Cubs won 97 games. Had it been the Giants and their 84 wins I would understand.

Sure, but it's not about the Cubs being undeserving--let's be honest, this is def. a team that could win it all--it's about the Pirates being more deserving than a coin toss game. To me, last night's game was really no different than an old-school play in game (which is the idea) ... but see, the Pirates didn't tie the Cubs in the regular season. They beat them. And while I get that the whole idea is to make WC teams suffer a little more in the playoffs than simply not getting home field advantage, a single game just feels weak to me.

I wasn't a huge fan of the two wild cards to begin with -- between the NFL's "Let's play every night on every continent!" strategy, the NBA's 7-game series for teams that barely win a third of their games and the fact that we're picking out turkeys by the time the World Series is over, the whole ratings grab aspect of these things is wearing on me as a fan. But if you must have two WC's, a best-of-three series would make a lot more sense.

I had either forgotten, or didn't know, that Grady Little was a senior adviser in the Pirates front office. Fuck you, Pirates.
