Per one of my sources, if it's a minor tear of the triceps it's a 4-8 week injury. If it needs surgery it's 12-16 weeks and likely put on IR.

That's really good news. If it was the tendon he'd need surgery and miss the year. Musculotendinous tears are more like 6-8 weeks, return in a Bledsoe brace for the year

Well. This is good news.
“@jeffphowe: Source: Rob Ninkovich’s torn triceps muscle will cost him ‘weeks, not months’ https://t.co/xIEef5ogpX

FOXBORO -- Defensive end Rob Ninkovich tore his triceps early during the 1-on-1 portion of today’s workout, according to a source. Ninkovich won’t need surgery, and the recovery time is "weeks, not months."

It sounds like the Sept. 11 regular-season opener against the Cardinals is an unrealistic goal, but Ninkovich could be back at some point in September if everything goes really well.

We all love Nink but he's 32 and BB has always been a year or so ahead in phasing over the hill players out. Grissom and flowers are the future at this position and this is their opportunity to show what they've got

Grissom just locked down his roster spot. Now it would be nice if he or Flowers can take a step forward.

I appreciate Nink but for awhile now have been wondering how an "Effort player" like him would age.

Any chance he is cut? He is not signed for 2017 and If I am reading Miguels right it would save 1.45 million. Not alot...but some spending money for when teams start cutting down to 53.

Can they even cut him if he is injured?

Why cut a productive player?

And if he's not signed for next year and they expect him healthy, how he ages isn't a big worry right now.

We dont know how he will return from injury. So deeming him productive for this season is a guess. If, and I admit its a big if, we can get a younger/more talented player for that 1.45 Million + a bit more then it may make sense to cut ties. If, and its a slightly smaller if, we can get a similar player as far as Age and talent for that 1.45 Million (with little or no extra money and years) then it may make sense cause you know what your getting from that player as opposed to Nink coming back from injury (IE your not sure what he will have when he comes back).
Basically it gives you a roster spot and the possibility to upgrade or be more certain of what you will have in that roster slot.

With Chris Long as a possible injury risk and not a whole lot of proven depth it may make sense to buy a little certainty by dumping Nink.

I believe you'd have to negotiate a waived/injured buyout deal. That makes sense in a lot of cases, but I think here, the savings would be pretty slim, relative to the potential for Nink to help later in the season (as you say, Long has an injury history) and in absolute dollars...

Where is this "certainty" that's not signed to an NFL deal available?

He won't be cut. He's one of the most important players on the defense and he has not lost a step at all. He's going to miss 2-3 games at the most and it's not an injury that will have lasting effect on him.

The bolded is borderline absurd. How can you say that of a player with a torn triceps who plays on the line? If he loses any strength over the next 6 weeks, it could very well have a lasting effect on his season.

I don't think you understood my point. If he tore the tendon, it would have lasting effects down the road similar to Jerod Mayo tearing his pec and possibly Solder with the bicep. Nink's tricep surely will be not be 100% during the season but it will be close and with a full offseason he will be fine.
