I can see why he was called the “punt god” in college

Not even the best punt ever at that stadium.Yeah, it's only a net 62
Close to the highlight of the year for the 1991 Patriots. Certainly would have been the peak for the 1990 team. Not even the best punt ever at that stadium.

And that punt went about 63 yards in the air.Not even the best punt ever at that stadium.

I remember exactly where I was when I saw this. Thanks for the memoriesNot even the best punt ever at that stadium.

More like 73, no? 5 yards deep in the end zone to the other 32? 5 + 50 + 18 = 73And that punt went about 63 yards in the air.
There was a 98 yarder awhile back. Dave Jennings, maybe? How is that only the 2nd greatest punt in NFL history?
Thanks, that's nuts. There was a 98 yarder awhile back. Dave Jennings, maybe?
Edit: Steve O'Neal.
Sorry. My earlier note about the Punt God’s punt was specific to “in the air from LOS” which I forgot to add for that Patriot punt.More like 73, no? 5 yards deep in the end zone to the other 32? 5 + 50 + 18 = 73
This has always been a pet peeve of mine in how the NFL keeps stats. Field goals are measured from where the ball is kicked, not the LOS. They can do the same thing with punts, using the blue bag that indicates where kick returns start, but choose not to do so.My earlier note about the Punt God’s punt was specific to “in the air from LOS” which I forgot to add for that Patriot punt.

What are your others ?One of my longest-standing pet peeves about NFL stats. . . .
I was genuinely interested in knowing what the other ones were. The first one was a good one.Good point. Poorly phrased.
Why’d the returner pick it up??
For that matter, a perfect pass that bounces off a receiver's hand/chest/whatever that winds up being picked counts as an interception against the QB- when a running back takes a screen pass 98 years, the QB is credited with 98 yards of passing, while a perfect 14-yard bullet into a tight window on 3rd and 13 that's dropped is just an incompletion.
Looks like he touched it as it came down, it’s trajectory seems to change. Why’d the returner pick it up??
Ah, thanks.Looks like he touched it as it came down, it’s trajectory seems to change.
What am I missing? The punt settled inches shy of the goal line. Had the returner not picked it up the LOS would be inches from the goal line. Picking it up and trying to return it was a smart move (even though he didn't improve field position much).Looks like he touched it as it came down, it’s trajectory seems to change.
I don’t think you are missing anything, it was a smart play even more so after touching it making it a live ball. What am I missing? The punt settled inches shy of the goal line. Gotcha. Agreed, I think trying to return it was the right call regardless of whether he touched it as it sailed over his head.I don’t think you are missing anything, it was a smart play even more so after touching it making it a live ball.
I think the prior poster thought it might run into the end zone for a touchback and had missed the prior touch.
I didn‘t think it had come to a stop when he picked it up.Gotcha. Agreed, I think trying to return it was the right call regardless of whether he touched it as it sailed over his head.
Oh yeah, I don't think that the punter could have set it down with his hands closer to the goal line. What an amazing punt.I didn‘t think it had come to a stop when he picked it up.

Which is why, to me, Ryan Allen had a better game in SB53 than Hekker. Hekker got extremely lucky on a couple of his punts, particularly on the SB record longest punt - it was actually a short punt that Edelman couldn't get upfield quickly enough to field. Whereas Allen's punts were all bombs and/or downed well inside the 20.Sure
What I was trying to do was separate distance the punt carried in the air from the post-bounce roll. The former is Indicative of the punter’s skill; the latter is about roll (and luck).
I probably should've specified, but that's the exact scenario I was referring to. I was tempted to call it 'the Edelman,' but that would be a disservice to a great receiver I have huge respect for.For that matter, a perfect pass that bounces off a receiver's hand/chest/whatever that winds up being picked counts as an interception against the QB
I’ve often thought of what would have happened if Brett Farve was still on the farm after Brady got hurt in 2008 instead of on the NYJ.This hypothetical depends on identifying that player. What QB better than Cassel - none of whom would have played in the Pats system - would have been available Week 2?
Apropos of nothing (though the Jimmy G and situation, Brady’s time off and now the Zach Wilson injury are all factoring in) - man what I wouldn’t give for a resurrection of those comical fake QB Facebook conversations from ~8-10 years ago. Nothing compared. There’s a new, worthy generation of QB personalities now - and even a few familiar faces from that era - to run it back and make it great.
Veris, Tippett, Lippett?Reminds me of the year the Pats lost their best DE, their best LB, and their best CB in the same preseason game (the last one IIRC).
Yup. 1989. Their best DL, LB, & CB. Basically ended their season before it started. They were coming off a 9-7 season and were heavily dependent on their D (their offense was . . . uninspiring— Grogan, Marc Wilson, corpse of Eason & Flutie @ QB. The glory days of John Stephens & Hart Lee Dykes. And amazingly both Stanley Morgan & Irving Fryar were on that team. Weird trip down memory lane).Veris, Tippett, Lippett?

The blue bean bag serves a purpose. It's the enforcement spot for fouls that occur during the kick. Throwing the bean bag where it's not warranted is a downgrade, similar to throwing a flag that is not warranted. This has always been a pet peeve of mine in how the NFL keeps stats. Field goals are measured from where the ball is kicked, not the LOS. They can do the same thing with punts, using the blue bag that indicates where kick returns start, but choose not to do so.
Except to measure the actual length of the punt, which are measured differently than field goals. There is no significance to the spot where the ball is punted.
Sounds like best case scenario to me.Zach Wilson is going to miss 4-6 weeks. The Jets just cannot catch a break.

Sounds like best case scenario to me.
The 2 week portion of the 2-4 week initial timeline never made any sense considering they said he was going to have surgery.
Bone bruise and meniscus surgery has a near 0% chance of being a 2 week return to play, unless maybe the Super Bowl is in 2 weeks.
