I wish the MLB did a Free Agent period like this. So much more interesting than the painful MLB process.
Oh, yes please although it would give me major Adalius flashbacks. Although he was 30 when signed vs. 28 for Judon.
I was curious too, so I checked in.View: https://twitter.com/DougKyed/status/1371525134528434179?s=20
Kyed: "Turned on Felger and Mazz to see how they'd spin this. Turns out players still don't want to come to New England."
I think the idea is that the Patriots traditionally sign for value. Smith may be worth his contract, but you're definitely paying at least market, and Godchaux feels like a straight up overpay, that's a lot of money for a mediocre non-pass rusher. Can't link it but Mike Tanier is saying that the pats are making the kind of moves that they chuckle at other teams for making--which honestly I don't get. Smith is being paid in the ballpark of a top TE, but he's 25 and very good. Goodcheaux is likewise making reasonable money but is again getting paid roughly market for a solid DT and, again, is in his prime.
Those two years are a big difference.Oh, yes please although it would give me major Adalius flashbacks. Although he was 30 when signed vs. 28 for Judon.
I get that I just think I'm reading the markets differently, I think both contracts are slightly rich but not substantial overpays.I think the idea is that the Patriots traditionally sign for value. and don't you feel better for not listening to them?I was curious too, so I checked in.
"Look at who they do deals with! Only Bill's buddies! Mayock in LV, Casserio in Houston and Drew Rosenhaus!"
This is why I haven't listened to them in months.
Click.
I get it, but I think the point of the tweet was that the Patriots traditionally don't want to pay top of the market, and especially overpays on non-elite guys. Smith feels like a slight overpay, but at least it makes sense given his age and potential, the Godchaux deal I don't get at all, it's quite high for what guys like that usually get, and jumping on it day 1 is unlike the Patriots. Now it probably means Bill thinks he sees something there that makes Godchaux likely to be significantly better than he's shown, but.... it's definitely not a value signing.I get that I just think I'm reading the markets differently, I think both contracts are slightly rich but not substantial overpays.
I think it's important to note (not that you are ignoring it, mind you) that in the past the Pats simply didn't have the cap space to pay top of market *and still retain a large amount of cap space to fill in elsewhere.*I get it, but I think the point of the tweet was that the Patriots traditionally don't want to pay top of the market, and especially overpays on non-elite guys. Every time I refresh BBTL, I am hoping to see that thread has started.Over the past four seasons, Matt Judon has 91 combined sacks and QB hits. That ranks 5th overall among edge guys.
Get 'em in here, Bill.
Yeah, Adalius was clearly a headcase but still showed solid physical talent. Adding Judon and High to the young'ns would make me quite pleased. Those two years are a big difference.
The Adalius problems seemed more about fitting into the program than about football performance.
Exactly what they needed - first a run-swallowing DT, then an edge rusher. They can add some speed at LB in the draft.Over the past four seasons, Matt Judon has 91 combined sacks and QB hits. That ranks 5th overall among edge guys.

I think the market for WRs is going to be soft. That's one position that they might want to wait out a bit given the strong WR draft class.I like Judon but not at the expense of a WR. WR is one position I don't want this team relying on the draft to fill
I’d like to see the Patriots trade Harry for Andy Isabella and see what they can get from him. Two disappointing receivers but the Pats may able to get more out of Isabella. It’s be brought on the midday show on 98.5.I like Judon but not at the expense of a WR. WR is one position I don't want this team relying on the draft to fill
As much as I would love Golladay or Samuel, I have to agree. There is a lot of quality out there that is not too far off with respect to talent/production/potential. I am fine spending on elite talent like Jonnu and Judon and getting quantity in the WR market on the relative cheap (Tate, Westbrook, Watkins, Sanders, Humphries, Brown, Cole, etc.).I think the market for WRs is going to be soft. That's one position that they might want to wait out a bit given the strong WR draft class.
There's two now. Can you hope for a quality outside threat at WR. too?Every time I refresh BBTL, I am hoping to see that thread has started.
Sure. Not sure how much it'll help. There's two now. Can you hope for a quality outside threat at WR. too?
Depends how backloaded these deals are. Based on AAV, I still think they have $15-20M left but it's a complete blind dart-throw guess until we get the specifics on some of these contracts. How much spending money do we have left??

Now Josina. Pats believe Judon signing is “close.”
I wonder who the source was for the first tweet!Text from Matt Judon on why he chose the #Patriots: "They chose me."
Yeah--strictly on AAV we have:Depends how backloaded these deals are. Based on AAV, I still think they have $15-20M left but it's a complete blind dart-throw guess until we get the specifics on some of these contracts.
Isn't this a super-strong draft for WRs, and super-weak for DT, Edge, and TE (Pitts notwithstanding)? Trying to remember where I heard a draft analyst say that teams are going to get starting WRs in the 5th round this year.I like Judon but not at the expense of a WR. I am glad to know that as a 45 year old man in a post-Brady world amidst a global pandemic, I can still get THIS excited about sports.
We are not good at drafting WRs. I dont have any faith that we will have a true WR1 on this roster if we bank on the draftIsn't this a super-strong draft for WRs, and super-weak for DT, Edge, and TE (Pitts notwithstanding)? I believe that the Steelers have figured out something about drafting WRs. For everyone else it's a dart throw, and the Patriots' failings are just small sample size.We are not good at drafting WRs. I dont have any faith that we will have a true WR1 on this roster if we bank on the draft
EDIT- Re that Howe post, I feel better
