It would be pretty cool. Top two free agents not going to the usual suspects for once.Rasputin said:An idea just crawled out of my ass.
What if the Astros think they're close enough that they just open the vault for Scherzer? It probably doesn't put them over the top but it would energize the franchise and the fanbase and legitimize them to some degree, making it easier to sign one of the free agents next off season.

Shelling out the big money for Scherzer, even overpaying him, would not be unlike what the Nationals did with Jayson Werth. It looked like an idiotic move at the time, and the Nationals were mocked at the time, but that was a team that looked in its minor leagues and saw guys coming that were coming to make this team a perrenial playoff contender. It also told the rest of the league, and the players in it, that they were serious about winning and they were going to do what it takes. I don't think the Nats regret that huge contract one bit.
Houston right now is in a similar position to the pre-Werth Nats.
Hee Sox Choi said:Looks like Kemp to the Padres is going down. That frees a lot of money for the Dodgers. Wouldn't be surprised if they go for Scherzer or deal for Hamels. Dodgers fans were convinced their lineup couldn't afford to lose Kemp, but if you have the pitching that they are lining up, you won't need many runs. Kershaw-Greinke-Scherzer-Ryu would be an epic playoff rotation.
Papelbon's Poutine said:WTF is taking so long on details on the Rollins trade? What Amaro took for him may give some insight on how reasonable he is being this year. I know not much, but the trade has been reported for six or seven hours now and they still can't find out what LAD gave up? In the words of PK, weird.
They have to be in on Moncada.Papelbon's Poutine said:They just signed McCarthy and traded for Rollins and Kendrick (albeit only one year on both of those) to take up Kemps' salary relief. I'm not sure they jump in on Scherzer, but I guess they could. There was talks they might want to actually dial it back a notch this season. They'll need to fill 3B, SS and 2B after the year, plus if Greinke opts out, SP. Not impossible but that's crazy even for them. I'm still not convinced they got in on Lester for anything other than irking/driving price up for Giants - they basically just phoned in an offer and never even met with him.
Would be crazy though. They'd be pushing what, $105M on the rotation alone in AAV? Kershaw ($31M), Greinke ($25M), Ryu ($6M), McCarthy ($12M), Scherzer (~$30M?). Throw In $10M more for Haren trade. I know they have "more money than God", but really?

Well, then choosing Chicago makes even more sense. I also read that Cabrera didn't want to sign on the West Coast, so maybe he was just using Seattle to drive up the market.
8:40pm: Passan tweets that there’s a chance that the players acquired in a potential Myers deal could be flipped to another club. While the deal currently being discussed only involved Tampa and San Diego, he gets the sense that the situation could mirror the Dodgers’ acquisition of Andrew Heaney. While Passan doesn’t specify, I’d imagine that the Padres are more apt to hang onto Myers than flip him.
Topkin tweets, however, that it’s possible that a third team is indeed in the mix, further complicating the picture.
:29pm: Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times tweets that he thinks the Mariners will announce a trade within the next two to three days. Crasnick tweets that his sense is that it’s a right-handed hitter who hasn’t been mentioned in much previous speculation, which would rule out Upton.

Exactly. As I mentioned before Myers makes a lot more sense for the Padres than Upton ever did. They already have good starters under control, do they even have an above average hitter besides Kemp?Snodgrass'Muff said:This makes me think that they might have a deal lined up for one of their starters because the Padres are probably a better team with Wil Myers added to their 25 man roster than Taijuan Walker. The incremental gain in the rotation would be less than they'd get by adding Myers to the outfield. Myers is young enough that you can expect improvement over his 2014. Quentin is flat out cooked.
edoug said:It appears Seattle isn't involved. The Mariners and Padres need hitting, actually so does Tampa but their in rebuild mode, there would probably need another team to send a bat to the team that doesn't get Myers.

Someone on MLB network brought up the point that the Rays may be worried about the wrist injury sapping his power. It makes sense after watching Adrian Gonzalez struggle to recover. I was never a Myers fan from watching him play in Tampa, so I think it would be smart to take in a haul.moondog80 said:Up until the time he got hurt, Myers did suck last year. I wonder if Tampa sees a little Ben Grieve in him?
