I think there was no coming back from being yanked in Sunday's game. When has a QB ever been benched in that situation? 2:00 drill down 6 in the 4th, not injury related? That just doesn't happen. I don't know how you go from taking him out in that situation to starting him the next game.
There isn't any coming back from that situation...not entirely sure why there has been media "speculation" about this...Mac was done at that point and no coach could possibly put Mac back as the starter, absent injuries to multiple players.

The only thing I can come up with is that while the devil we don't know might be more intriguing than Mac, is it possible that that devil is even worse at Quarterbacking?

I believe that the Patriots' coaching staff has assessed the relative QB abilities of Jones vs. the other stiffs in the QB room and decided week after week that, while it may hard for us to believe, Jones is the best available option.

That said, I think regardless of that assessment, a change needs to be made. I just don't see how you can continue to run Jones out there.

That's been my take for a while, for as bad as Mac has been the other options on the roster are evidently worse. Which is honestly horrific looking at how bad Mac has been.

Why? Bill will start whomever he thinks has the best chance to win, is my assumption. The fact that he didn't think that was Mac on Sunday is a good indication of what he'll do going forward, but there is no rule here. Zappe sucks too.

I fully expect that Mac might start again this year. And I don't really care one way or other. The most important thing to me is that they not spend any additional cap or other resources on the position.

Mac Jones lined up with the #Patriots starting offense to begin practice.
I just happened across Greg Bedard’s podcast with Mike Giardi on Twitter about the Mac situation and Greg was talking about Zappe being the only backup option at QB “because Belichick does such a great job planning on the offensive side of the ball.”

However bad Mac is—or poorly Bill has managed this situation—how miserable of a prick--and unprofessional--do you have to be to say this kind of stuff on air?

I hope Mac plays every game for the rest of the season and it ruins Greg's year. What a dick.

There was a reply to one of Bedard's tweets, or maybe it was a repost, alleging that Bedard had at one point applied for a job in the Patriots' scouting department, and was not given an interview by Belichick and mocked by Patricia, and that is driving a lot of the personal animosity that Bedard displays towards Belichick. No idea of the veracity but I hope it's true.

Obviously they assumed Mac was the sure option at QB and Zappe was drafted to be the depth/developmental guy. The fact that Zappe gave them anything last year as the third string QB and won a couple games speaks highly of him.

That wouldn't remotely surprise me. The guy spent the entire offseason crowing about how he predicted last season was going to be a mess -- at one point I heard him say, "And I was completely right by the way!" (as if he was the only one who reported that the Patricia/Judge thing was a mess in preseason). The guy runs a publication that touts "fully credentialed professional journalists" and does know his football, and yet he's incredibly thin-skinned and seems to miss no opportunity to flaunt his inferiority-complex-in-the-guise-of-"I-Knew-Better."

Too bad. I was looking forward to Grierzappe running the table, both getting hurt in the 1st Q of the 1st playoff game and Mac coming to the rescue like Bledsoe (who didn't really play that well that day, but hagiographies gonna hagiograph).

There is a logic to continuing to play Mac: see if he can find a way back to something more like his Year 1 form or he continues to fail and the Pats lose the rest of the games.

Added bonus is driving SJH mad.

How the fuck do you bench somebody for a potential game winning drive and then start them the next game? Just give it up already. See if you have anything in any of the other QB, why the hell not.

UGH.
Because maybe BB *is* tanking...

Nope. that ain't me. (My Twitter account has the same avatar as the one I use here).

But it's nice to know that I'm hardly alone on an island in my opinions lol.
No, I was kidding. I remember the Danger Mouse avatar from the Deadspin comment board. But that dude seems to understand the Boston sports world well and is teaming with rage. Perhaps we need to form a support group.

8.5 YPA is the opposite of terrible. Now, Mac was not good in the game, but 8.5 YPA in a vacuum is fucking awesome.
Please delete. Did not finish reading the thread. Already discussed.

Just to add (piling on to Mac here not to DJnVA) some context, his total yards includes the 30 yard pass play, in the Hail Mary situation, at the end of the half to Douglas. That appeared to be something between a gamble and see if all the Colts fall down and stay down and stat padding for Jones (and technically for Douglas too).

I guess I'd never noticed before, but apparently, teams can and do practice on their bye weeks:

On bye weeks, teams may choose to practice Monday-Wednesday before players are given the remainder of the week off. This allows additional time in the middle of the season for rest. Coaches, however, review video of the games played before the bye — focusing on what went well and also what needs to improve — before eventually turning their attention to the next matchup, reviewing film and adjusting practice in preparation for the next opponent."

Many/most teams skip the Monday-Tuesdays, as those are typical player days off anyhow, but guess they're out prep'ing before the pivotal Thanksgiving matchup.

This upcoming Giants game feels like a major trap, the Pats and Mac REALLY need to put their worst foot forward to get to the ultimate goal (top 5 draft pick).

Anyone bitching about Mac...who gives a shit? Think about the throws we've seen from Bailey this season. Mac is really bad, but Zappe is worse. His lightning in the bottle routine is long over.

The QB doesn't matter. Lose as much as possible. That's all.

If Bill is serious about Shula, I think they need to win this one.

Won't say he will be fired for sure but I think if they end up with a Top 2 pick you want a new coach making the decision. Or a new GM at least.

I've run into him several times at a local breakfast joint I go to as well as the post office; he's much more than a "halfway" decent person off the football field, he's pretty fucking far from a total asshole, I can assure you of that.

And I'm with you; I take no joy either watching his career go up in flames, at least in New England.

I wonder how much time Belichick spends with him breaking down film of the upcoming opponents defense like he did with Brady every Tuesday when he was here.
Mac Jones going to the post office is kinda blowing my mind.

I don't know if this says more about Mac or Alabama, but I just learned he majored in Communications with a 4.00 GPA.

COMMUNICATIONS!
The man is e—lite at communicating that it’s everyone else’s fault. Heck, let’s face it, when it comes to passing the blame his QB rating soars into the 140s.

Dan Roche on the Fred & Friends show this morning said that the media say 6 snaps total in yesterday's practice and each QB got 2 of them. Mac had his two with the 1st stringers, but Roche didn't read anything into that.

Bill trolling the Boston media by having Mac take only those six snaps alone would warrant bringing him back next year.

Mike Reiss is there all the time, super nice guy, I ran into Winovich there a few times as well when he was on the team.

He is huge.

Beyond huge.

A workout warrior like you would appreciate what a large human he is.

It's funny how pro athletes are on a completely different level than your average person; a guy like that washes out of the league but is a better athlete than 99% of the people in the world.

Scalabrine showed that pretty effectively when he took on average dudes in a pickup game IIRC.

I remember seeing Willie McGinest at the South Shore Plaza when I was about 14-15 and he was just an immense human being. I really couldn't wrap my brain around it.
