Better from Arsenal in the last 20 minutes and rewarded with a goal.  The match has been pretty disappointing though - two sides that haven't been particularly adventurous, lots of sloppy play from Arsenal, and both goals scored from bad defensive errors more than anything else.

Keep in mind these are weekday evening games and most of Europe is in the same time zone.  Unless you want games kicking off while people are still at work or at 10 PM local time, it's tough to stagger them.

Fair point.  Still, you could stagger them an hour at least.  Also, the Bucharest game could have started an hour or two earlier -- it's two hours later there than most of Europe, I think.

The second leg of Arsenal-Dortmund has been fairly entertaining despite very few chances for either team - just tough and cagey tactical football from two well coached sides. Arsenal have zero shots but that really doesn't tell the story - they've hung in very tough, weathered Dortmund's energetic pressing and substantially limited their chances, and are in pretty good position to steal a point or three in the second half if they get a few breaks.

And Arsenal go up 1-0 on 61 minutes on their first shot on goal of the game, massively against the run of play. They were getting absolutely stormed in the first fifteen minutes of the half. I wouldn't expect that score to hold up.

All of the sudden, this is quite the game.  Ending 0-1 seems very very unlikely at this pace.

Aaron Ramsey.  Unbelievable year so far.

Edit:  Well, it is 0-1.  Not without amazing drama at the end though -- Arsenal win a free kick deep in the offensive corner with a good chance to run out the clock, but inexcusably commit an offside offense on the restart with only about 2 feet to do so.  Dortmund come down and earn a scoring chance and a pretty decent shout for a penalty in the final seconds.

Great gritty win for Arsenal, who now look very well positioned to win the group, especially if they can beat Marseille at the Emirates. And now Dortmund faces a virtual must-win match against Napoli later this month if they want to advance at all.

Anyone else think Barca will win 5-2?

Ozil with a subpar penalty, and Arsenal are left with work to do.  Either way, the loser of Dortmund/Napoli is in trouble.

What a complete shitshow from Leverkusen, 0-5 at home. Pathetic.

Julian Green made his Bayern debut vs. CSKA Moscow today, coming on at 87' for Mario Goetze. He didn't touch the ball, but hey, there's 5 CL minutes.

City now up 3-2 on Bayern and can secure first place in the group with a 4-2 win.

Juventus-Galatasary match was suspended at 0-0 on 33 minutes due to a freak hailstorm that transformed the pitch in about ten minutes.  Juve needs a result to advance.

It may not be as fun as winning the kitalar arasi derbi, but Galatasary can certainly celebrate bragging rights in the match-fixing derby.

It's a shame that one of Drogba or Buffon had to be left out of the final 16, but soccer's a cruel game.  Sort of like Sweden/Portugal, I guess.   :nsmith:

Seriously, though -- pretty good start to what could be a thrilling day in the champions league.

Montolivo red card against Ajax.  Not gonna be easy to hold on for Milan (who just announced that they signed Honda from CSKA.  Great little player)

Good game in Marseille.

Has a team on 12 points failed to go through in UEFA CL in recent history -- still unlikely but amazingly still possible.

Edit:  Oh my, Payet is off for Marseille on second yellow for simulation in the box, and Dortmund are in business.

Napoli score with Higuain.  As things stand they are through but a Dortmund win will see them through instead.

Anyone else see Neymar's third for Barca?  I feel bad for the Celtic player that he skinned.

Arsenal win the group, even if Napoli win by 3, if Dortmund stays tied with Marseille.   Both things have to happen for Arsenal not to go through -- Napoli winning by 3 and Dortmund winning.

It's a Dortmund goal away from happening, as things stand.

Both Arsenal and Marseille are down to ten men and this is too much to take and I'm supposed to get work done this afternoon?

Dortmund have been playing in the final quarter of the field for 70 minutes, but just can't break through.  The good ship Jurgen Klopp is surprisingly calm.  Dortmund just denied what seemed like a very clear penalty.

Edit:  And justice prevails.  Klopp seemed to know it was coming -- he seemed so calm.

Dortmund may be a jobbed out of a place in the 16 by the ref's decision not give a penalty there.  Not sure why it wasn't given.

Now Arsenal need to score on a counter to avoid second place and Napoli need two to go through.

Edit:  Hoo boy.  The plot thickens.

Milan have gone through.  At the death, an Ajax player had a bicycle kick that went maybe 2 feet wide.  Heart in throat moment.

I can't believe Arsenal were so lackadaisical tonight.  Finishing runners up mean a date with one of Att Madrid, Real Madrid, Bayern, Barca or PSG.  Same for City.

Trying to avoid Chelsea or Man U maybe?   :smithicide:

Crazy that Atletico Madrid is probably the team Arsenal least want to avoid in the draw -- they took 15 of 16 points from their group, with a GD of +12, and have won 13 of 15 in La Liga this year.

Sounds like Montolivo had a really horrible foul to get a red card, but Milan held on with 10 men for 70 minutes.  They squeak through.

Something not quite right with the Rossineri these days -- what happened to them?

Can we only watch the Arsenal/Bayern game live tomorrow on TV? It looks like Fox Sports is the only channel to carry the games, but Atletico/Milan is televised after it finishes.

You can watch for free on Fox Soccer 2 Go. Just cancel the recurring subscription and you will not be charged anything.

0-1 in London with 25minutes to go, Arsenal has to keep the scoreline close.
Bayern is now dominating with Kroos being the main distributor.

Olympiakos up 1-0 on United in Athens at half time.

United had one shot (not on goal) the entire half and no decent opportunities.  The combination of Carrick/Cleverley in midfield and Young/Valencia on the wings makes for some ridiculously boring and unimaginative football.

Arsenal loanee Joel Campbell is in the Olympiakos side for the few of us interested in that dimension of things.  He's done basically nothing though.

Yeah, scratch that.  He just scored an awesome goal with his left from about 25 yards out.  2-0 Olympiakos.

2-0 FT and that scoreline doesn't even do justice to how stunningly crappy United looked the entire match - a pure pleasure to watch for all the haters out there.  Moyes is really the best.  I hope he never leaves.
