Well it's true if you're trying to sell Buicks. Or adult diapers. Or cell phones with extra large buttons.Yes. Every single marketing firm that has been directing their attention to the 18-34 demographic for the last 40 years have been completely wrong. It's the COVETED 35+ demographic of men who presumable have families to take care of, are already entrenched in the brands that they chose to spend money on and have little in the way of disposable income. THAT'S who advertisers want.
Not the 25-year-old kid who has a job, more money than he/she has ever seen before and is buying tons of impulse purchases, because "Why not?"
My favorite part is that there's no upper limit, just 35+. I'm sure their domination in the retired grandfather market with all those people on fixed incomes is what advertisers want as well.Yes. Had this on when I turned the car on and Tanguay was back! Ohhh the drama. I hope my 17 seconds of listening doesn't push them over the top.
Yeah, so much for Tanguay's "stunt"! I heard Meter was on as well instead of Minihane. (Click.)Had this on when I turned the car on and Tanguay was back! Ohhh the drama. I hope my 17 seconds of listening doesn't push them over the top.
Man I think Tanguay would actually be a downgrade from Dennis. What a dumb decision that would be.The title refers to when Dennis' contract is up and he has made no secret he is done when that happens. Much of the discussion around this latest stunt is who will take his place when he is gone between Tanguay or Mut.
Jack Buck
CBS handled the national radio broadcast of the 1988 World Series, with Jack Buck providing play-by-play and Bill White as the analyst. This was Buck's call. It begins here with Buck speculating on what might happen if Gibson manages to reach base:
... then you would run for Gibson and have Sax batting. But, we have a big 3–2 pitch coming here from Eckersley. Gibson swings, and a fly ball to deep right field! This is gonna be a home run! Unbelievable! A home run for Gibson! And the Dodgers have won the game, five to four; I don't believe what I just saw!
The last sentence is often remembered and quoted by fans. Buck followed it with,
I don't believe what I just saw! Is this really happening, Bill?
Buck concluded his comments on Gibson's amazing feat with this thought:
One of the most remarkable finishes to any World Series Game...a one-handed home run by Kirk Gibson! And the Dodgers have won it...five to four; and I'm stunned, Bill. I have seen a lot of dramatic finishes in a lot of sports, but this one might top almost every other one.
Scully made the Buckner call.*Scully's call.
Scully also made the Gibson call. He was on NBC tv and Buck was doing radio.
So it takes zero skill to do PBP, but the difference between Curt Schilling vs Jessica Mendoza on color is a really big deal.Mutt filling in for Dino this morning. Having to listen to Gerry and Kirk talk about play by play and how it takes zero skill to be a good PBP guy. Literally zero.
Scully's call on the Gibson HR was just as memorable as Buck's for what he didn't say, IMO. And that's what makes Scully great.Scully also made the Gibson call. He was on NBC tv and Buck was doing radio.
[Tanguay] You're a moron! [ / Tanguay] Schilling and Mendoza are color (not colored) analysts. It takes no skill to do Play by Play, but filling gaps in air and generally talking about baseball with no real insight takes real skill. So it takes zero skill to do PBP, but the difference between Curt Schilling vs Jessica Mendoza on color is a really big deal.
Glad they cleared up something I've never given a shit about.
Lest anyone think this is the case, I've heard The Most Honest Man on the Radio, Kirk Minihane, give the same pathetic "Older guys are the ones who buy cars and houses!!" party line on the air.Dennis's tweet, in light of the T&R tweet about the Demos in which they are No. 1, almost seems like a joke. As if someone got a hold of Dennis's account and tweeted "hey, we're #1 in 35+"
Jack Clompas was listening to D&C when he drove the Cadillac into the swamp on his way to DelBocaVista."Older guys are the ones who buy cars and houses!!" party line on the air.
I think it's fair to say they have more in common with that decrepit cowboy than they would care to admit.Hmm, the Dennis explanation of demos sure sounds like the Imus explanation when he lost to D & C in the ratings. I believe D & C laughed at Imus' desperate grasp for relevance back then.
Just flipped on for a minute, Schilling on today. Conversation regarding Zika virus, mosquito spraying, and its effect on Eco-systems went like this(paraphrasing):
Callahan: "they say like 1,000 species goes extinct every day, but who cares? That's always happened".
Schilling: "how do they even know that, who can even track it? That's a BS stat. And besides, Mother Nature will sort it all out anyway". America is going to be so great again.
So humans are winning. Believe me, we're winning so big............... That apparently 40% of the electorate is one big Curt Schilling fills me an existential dread I can barely describe."Curt, you've got cancer. But we're confident we can treat it. Not going to kid you, the treatment will be difficult, but you'll be cancer free."
"You're one of those 'scientists,' aren't you? How do you even know that I have cancer? Spare me your BS. Mother Nature will sort it out. I'm outta here."
(searches for insurance card brought to him by strong Union; which he still has because Commie-law bars his health insurance company from dropping him (or his wife) due to their cancer history).
And FWIW---
According to the UN Environment Programme, the Earth is in the midst of a mass extinction of life. Scientists estimate that 150-200 species of plant, insect, bird and mammal become extinct every 24 hours. This is nearly 1,000 times the “natural” or “background” rate and, say many biologists, is greater than anything the world has experienced since the vanishing of the dinosaurs nearly 65m years ago.

Minihane has apparently watched way too much WWE and thinks that "act" is gonna take him places in the future. He's already the third (unnamed) voice on New England's 7th (amirite @Chad Finn?) best rated morning show!Listening to Minihane's podcast from today. He had Mike Mutnansky on as "host", but it was really the two of the them talking. Kirk once again stated that he and Dennis have no off air relationship and it's uncomfortable during breaks. He spoke vaguely about why they don't get along, but it sounds like there have been incidents where he felt Dennis was trying undermine him. I don't listen to D&C anymore, so not sure if they spoke about this on air previously. Mut still stinks because he's still a generic radio guy. Nothing unique or compelling about him. Minihane was point blank telling him that's the reason why his career hasn't progressed further and it was going in one ear and out the other.
You think the guy participating in Red Sox broadcasts is more irrelevant than the third wheel on the D&C show?I don't care if Mut is still in radio in 5 years. If he wants to remain irrelevant and make shit money for that long, good for him.
You think if WEEI offered them to switch gigs it would be Mut who'd say no?You think the guy participating in Red Sox broadcasts is more irrelevant than the third wheel on the D&C show?
I don't doubt Mut would read headlines and try to ignore Gerry's racism if he was assigned to do that by the brilliant minds who run WEEI. Is being on Red Sox broadcasts better than being ignored by John Dennis? I dunno - I suppose that depends on if your goal is to have a job in radio five years from now, or not.You think if WEEI offered them to switch gigs it would be Mut who'd say no?
You think 3rd chair on the 7th best rated morning show in the market pays really well?Kirk may very well flame out but he is likely making more in a year as Mut will make in the next 10.
Do you have some inside info or something? He is a personality and while his name isn't on the show he has been the lead voice there for quite a while now. I guarantee you he is making a hell of a lot more money than Mut who is likely making about the same as a manager at Chili's.
Edit:I have no idea what a manager at Chili's makes but I assume it is nothing special.
Holy shit. I hope he's with the Astros or the Rangers. $40,000 a year doesn't go far in LA, the Bay Area or Seattle. My buddy hosts a pre and post game show on radio (and is a fill in on TV) for an AL West team. He makes less than $40K a year.
Radio/TV is very much a pyramid. There are tons of people making almost nothing, and a few at the top in big markets making a fortune. He's not with the Astros or Rangers. The pre/post game show isn't a full time a gig (obviously doesn't work during the off-season) but you're right it doesn't go far. His wife works and they still can't afford to buy a house. And he's a fairly well know sports personality in his market. I don't think people realize how little some in the sports media world are paid.
