They're close; and while I'm not certain that Smoltz is HoF caliber, I think the fact that he put in 17 full-and-good seasons puts him slightly ahead of Schilling, who had several cut-short seasons. (quick and dirty: Smoltz had 9 30-start seasons and 3 29's; schilling had 7 30's, a 29 and 2 26s.)
And while he wasn't quite Schilling's post-season equal, he was pretty damn good.
You have a pretty tiny Hall if you don't think Smoltz or Schilling are up to snuff.
